It had started out as such a simple idea, a spur of the moment decision turned in to a quaint little moment with white roses and sweet display of affection. And somehow… ended up here. Maybe due in part to his friend’s romantic heart as well as his own, and a seemingly random funny idea that somehow made its way in to fruition because what better way than to channel his inner Fabio to ask the perfect girl of his dreams out. But no matter where it started, silly text ideas over weeks turned to afternoons of preparation, here he sat… uncomfortably and for the very first time in his life… on a horse.

Somehow he had let Lulu convince him to talk to the equestrian team to sequester a trainer and a horse for the event… without fully realizing there was a reason he had never ridden a horse before until today. But the fear he felt pounding in his chest due in part by the monstrous creature below him, despite her gentle nature and sweep disposition, it hardly compared to the nervousness he felt at what he was about to do. No amount of time, afternoons he normally spent hanging out with her studying in the library or walking around town until traffic calmed down enough where she could commute home (something he often offered if only for a little more time with her) blown off in lieu of getting all his “ducks” in a row, could prepare him for what he was about to do. Friendly as he was… being confident and outgoing when it came to matters of the heart was not his forte—Terence Hallows before now had never been on the dating market due to his own shyness and reservations. But he wasn’t about to let that get in the way of what he felt for her—not wanting to let it… let her slip through his fingers without trying. She was worth it. Worth the potential pain of rejection, that was for sure… but worth the awkwardness he felt atop the saddle, fingers clutching the reins as he slowly navigated the lunch rush—so awkwardly exposed in a way that would only get him detention. But she was worth even that…

All he knew was that no matter what… it needed to be perfect. She, this small little farm girl who never asked anything of anyone, deserved for the first to be treated like the treasure she was. And not just as some charity case the rich kid’s parents threw money at because she had a voice… because she was so much more than that. And he wanted her to see that… and feel that… and know that cared. And if that meant riding up to her at lunch on a pure white horse (in this case, mostly white worked since he didn’t have another choice) with the classic white poofy shirt with all the buttons undone with an arm full of roses, by god would he do it—no matter how scared he was of falling off Harriet. He might have felt like a fool, a nervous fool as he felt eyes following him as he navigated the courtyard slowly as to not step on anyone, but the feeling disappeared as soon as he saw her…

The whispers around him started to get louder as he got closer, and he wondered if she had just yet to hear them or if she was listening to music… but he didn’t take his eyes off of her. It slowly dawned on him as the crowd started to part, whispers like a loud thrum as eyes followed his own line of sight, that he had no speech prepared… having spent all his free time that past month just planning with Lulu and actually learning to ride the horse… he had thought something romantic would just pop in to his head like it did in those cute movies… or like one of the protagonists in the book exclaiming their love… but instead of being the Fabio character in his own promposal he felt like the sidekick, awkwardly there without an idea of what to say. But all the same, sappy declaration of long felt feelings and a crush for the past… couple of months at the very least (though who was he kidding, he had liked her since he first talked to her at the beginning of the year) or not… here he was. There was no going back.

The crowd he had gathered from the stables all the way to the courtyard had gone dead silent as he halted a short distance from the ginger, giving her space and even time to gather herself from what he could only assume would be shock. It wasn’t everyday he, let alone anyone, rode a horse in to the courtyards. Summoning a breath his blue eyes narrowed in on her, a smile grew on his lips from ear to ear, “Tahlia Berry,” his voice was confident, unlike the uneasiness he felt in his chest, demanding her attention. His cheeks flushed as he looked down at her, bouquet of roses cradled in to the crook of his arm that clutched tightly to the reins. The guys in the books did it so much more eloquently.
