His footsteps were heavy upon the dry earth and he kicked up dust with every step. Simba frowned, he remembered once upon a time, dragging his paws through the ashen ground only to reveal life underneath. Now, there was nothing. It was dead, just like his father, daughter, Pride and marriage. He wondered why he kept doing this. What was there to prove? Everything was gone. He liked to torture himself it seemed, yet erasing what happened in his own mind would not change the past. In many ways he hated coming here, yet it was necessary for that reason. Memories were all he had and learning from mistakes was no longer an option. He sighed, feeling his insides twist and heart sink.

Perhaps, it would have been better if he never came back. If he had just stayed away like Scar wanted, none of this would have happened. Dying along side his father seemed even more ideal. It wasn't the first time he had these thoughts but it was one of many days in a row in which they'd surfaced. He tried to squash them down but it was difficult, impossible, like asking the sun not to rise. There was little point in wishing on the past, but the wisdom he had been taught seemed so hollow. Walking through high grass, he craned his neck to look at the sky and thanked what little luck he had left it wasn't nighttime. He didn't need the kings of the past watching him.

He felt so lost, every inch of him ached. He asked himself what was the point of this? He'd been coming across to preserve his memories and look for signs of his Pride and daughter for so long now and there had been nothing. Hope felt out of reach, this was simply habit, like brushing his teeth. The savanna seemed to reflect him like a mirror, empty, nothing but a graveyard dotted with ruins. This place was once so full of life and he couldn't help but shoulder all the blame for its demise. Pausing, he sat by the skeleton of a tree and looked back the way he'd come. His memories were preserved for the next little while, he just wanted to leave. Simba turned with a groan and began to walk back the way he'd come when a sound caught his attention.

He whipped around, growling, catching the slightest movement in the grass. Bending down low, he entered into stalking mode and waited. Seemingly from nowhere, darkness creatures attacked, slashing at him from every angle, as if they knew he needed to be punished. He fought back at first, roaring and swiping with his claws but something in him caused him to slow and allowed them to gain the upper hand. It's probably better this way. He thought, but as one of the creatures cut his side and he cried out in pain, Simba retaliated on instinct, clamping his jaws around them and prying them away. This wasn't good.

All he could think about was Nala and everything he regretted, wishing he had one last chance to fix things with her.

In the animated world, Stormfly never walked anywhere if she could help it. Flying was just so much better than walking. Up in the sky, she could see for miles and miles, especially if the day was uncharacteristically clear for the darkness infested world. The portal dropped her off in the savanna, which was a location she wasn’t very used to. The terrain was much flatter and drier than her home was. Berk was surrounded by the ocean and was on a rock elevated high above. Even the forest was closer to what her home was like than the savanna.

She was so high up that any other beings on the ground were just specks to her. Stormfly was not looking at or for anything in particular, as she was not on a mission for the Resistance, but was merely going for a fly by herself. However, there was something on the ground that caught her attention. There were several large spots that appeared out of nowhere and had encircled a smaller spot. She tilted her head to the side, not quite sure what she was seeing. Before the Darkness fell, Stormfly would have just assumed that her eyes were playing tricks on her. After all, things did not just appear how of nowhere, right? Well, she most certainly knew better now.

Stormfly flew lower to get a better look and she quickly realized what was happening. The larger spots were Darkness creatures and they had cornered someone. She immediately sprang into action and fired her spikes, expertly missing the non-Darkness being. She hit all of them and it was enough to get one of the creatures to flee. The others? They seemed unfazed and even worse, they each split themselves so that there were twice as many Darkness creatures now. As much as she hated to admit it, Stormfly knew the chance of winning this fight were minimal.

So, instead of continuing the fight, Stormfly gently collected the other being in her claws and took flight. She was unsure whether the Darkness creatures would follow them or not, but it wouldn’t be smart to stick around. “Are you hurt?” she asked, ducking her head down to look at the being she picked up – she wasn’t quite sure what it was.

Ooc: Ahhhh I hope this was okay??

He had been in worse situations than this before; caught in a stampede, chased by hyenas, dehydrated in a desert, almost burnt to death… the list went on. He’d fought the darkness too, but thought himself very much alone, so when something suddenly appeared, fired spikes and grabbed him – an adult male lion – and took flight, well, he was a little surprised. More than a little. Tau fought against his instinct to wriggle as the ground got further and further away. He gulped and fixed his eyes on the horizon, refusing to look down. It wasn’t that he was afraid of heights, quite the opposite.

In the human world he faced similar dangers every day, rappelling from helicopters into freezing ocean waves. This? This was different. He was in the claws of some giant… lizard, not in a man-made, safety tested helicopter piloted by a trained professional. He felt as though his heart was going to burst from his chest with pain and mild panic. Tau was used to being one of the most fearsome beings in his kingdom. He didn’t visit the portal often enough to know the full breadth of the creatures it housed. Meeting this one was something of a harsh reality check. If nothing else, it took his mind off his misery.

Today was a day full of surprises, he wasn’t expecting the thing to bend over and ask him if he was alright, but it did and Tau let out something of a half-roar. “What?” he asked. “Uh, a little?” He admitted. He felt pain that was for sure, but didn’t know the extent of his injuries with the amount of adrenaline running through his veins. “Could you maybe put me down now?” He asked, his mane whipping about his face in the breeze. The look on his face would have been comical, akin to a funny video of YouTube of a trapped cat, highly uncomfortable with its situation.

“Don’t get me wrong. I really appreciate you swooping in.” He explained, trying not to extend his claws in case he hurt the… whatever it was. Was this what Zazu experienced every day of his life? Flying free through the skies? Tau was eternally grateful the king’s aide wasn’t large enough to pick him up as a cub and fly off. He reasoned his childhood would have been vastly different, with the bird-brain getting the one-up on him most of the time. Instead of the other way around. Calling Zazu that wasn’t fair, however in his own mind it was affectionate. Simba missed him, as much as he missed everyone.
