The air rustling through the tree branches was the only sound filling the sky, her footsteps quiet as she stepped on the damp grass. It moved this way and that as she did, falling closer to the ground that created it. The world was calm, oddly, almost as if there was something there, waiting. Why? There was nothing safe about this world any more, nothing comfortable nor relaxing. Something was evil, out there, waiting and watching her every move. It stole away her world, and it wanted to steal her away as well. That was all the darkness truly wanted, wasn’t it? It wanted to destroy everything anyone ever cared about… How? Why? Moriko could not piece together what exactly happened in this world, nor did she know if it would ever change, or if anyone would truly understand where this came from. All she knew was that it was there, and it was dangerous.

The wind blew and Moriko adjusted the mask against her face. She wanted to stay safe, and she wanted to stay hidden. Her senses were on high alert- she could just feel that something wasn’t good. That something was going to happen. The sinking feeling in her stomach was terrible, one she didn’t want to feel have, no matter what. It was a human feeling, a human-like desire. Who would ever want to feel this way? If it were up to her, things would return to normal. The wolf princess would have been back home, fighting for her forest and the spirit that kept them all safe. Things would be fine, in the end, or so she could hope for.

Moriko had experienced many things in her life, from death and destruction to the wonders of life and spirits. She had fought against countless people as well- some she never saw again. Never did you know if you could trust whoever you found in the woods- you never knew if they were part of the darkness, or if they were just themselves. Countless humans fought against everyone and anyone they came across, stupidly thinking they were all evil. The wolf princess had experienced many moments like that, especially with her silence and her mask worrying others… Although she could only think of one moment at this time as the scent filled her nose. A man she had fought against once- he shot at her and she sliced at him. A normal fight before they both ran off, both going off in their own little ways again.

She never wanted to fight for long.

A bow and arrow only reminded her of Kazuki, in the end, the only human she would trust. Those were his weapon of choice, for the most part. He seemed willing to change, no matter what was going on. It was something she had not experienced with many other humans… Only she could not focus on him now. He was fine, somewhere back in the human world. And she was here, spending time in the world she felt far safer in no matter what was going on.

She approached the scent, her dagger in hand. There was no reason to worry, no reason to rush. All she wanted was to see just what was going on, just to understand where things were going. Did she need to be worried? Not of this human- she could dodge an arrow. But she could not dodge much more.

There was something else around, and it was behind her. Turning around, she found herself face to face with some sort of evil creature, something that was different. Some monster… She yelled as she ran to the side- could she disorient it and not allow the other scent to fight as well? Moriko was not sure what would happen, not now.

She could cross over a million times and still not feel comfortable in this realm. Moriko knew that, and she accepted it. Neither world was truly her home, as neither of these worlds were her own forest. There was no place that she could truly be herself other than that. The other world, the new world, San Francisco, was horrible. Always loud, always smelly, and a place she just couldn’t be comfortable. It was the future of her world, the future of what would happen if things didn’t work out. If she had been unable to save her forest… Which was exactly what had happened. She had Ashitaka back in her life now, although his name was Kazuki in the other world, and he had told her the rest of the story. San knew that Okkoto had become a demon, that the forest spirit had been killed… And now she was not sure what to do with herself. What was the point of anything now? If the forest spirit’s energy was gone, and the darkness had attacked, how could she keep her forest safe? It was gone. Everything was over now.

Yet she had Ashitaka by her side again. He gave her a sort of belief in herself that she couldn’t quite place. Why had he always managed to find her? How? Ever since he had entered her life things had been different. The forest was different, the gods were different… Of course she did not believe it was because of him. The humans were going to attack one way or another- at least they had one more person on their side during that, even if he was a human. Although she did not truly know if he was on her side, not in the end. Everything about him was different, even his people were hidden in the shadows. Speaking of his people, where was Yakul? Was he safe? San imagined he was off, hiding somewhere with her brothers. Safe. As long as she believed it, they would have to be safe. Of course it was far easier to just accept that, maybe, they were all dead. They were peaceful, just like her mother said she would be once she passed on.

San did not want to be selfish, she did not want to feel such a human emotion, but at this moment she could not help it. She wanted to go off in search of them all again. It would be possible, wouldn’t it? Together they could travel far enough to figure it all out. They just had to start somewhere- and today that somewhere was the savannah. Not a type of land she really enjoyed, but it was something. She whipped the sweat off her brow and took a few steps forward, ”Why does this place exist? It’s so hot.” she questioned, turning towards Ashitaka, ”Where should we go first?”

[dohtml]“And if we get them all? We could destroy him, the dark one?”

”We could.”

It seemed impossible. Destroying the dark one himself? The one whose name who couldn’t be spoken? Whose name invoked fear into all who heard it? That simply had to be impossible. He would be impossible to destroy, he was the darkness that would always be around, lurking in the shadows of the school. Things had gotten worse, recently, as he gained more and more powerful. Yet he had figured it out, he had found a way to stop the dark one from winning. And it was completely impossible to believe. It was crazy talk! He could destroy any of them with a snap of his fingers, his power could rival that of countless others. No one could stop him, not anymore…

Years had passed since the dark one had won. He killed Harry Potter, the boy who lived, the boy who everyone believed could stop the evil man once again… But he couldn’t. Voldemort cast him aside with ease, killing him. Perhaps, if this theory of Horocrux’s was real, he had destroyed part of himself as well…. But they had lost Harry, they had lost their only hope, and now the dark lord ran over it all. Moriko despised it. She was disgusted by the fact that everyone simply followed his lead, that they bent down and took whatever he gave them. Moriko would have never done such a thing. Sure, she had on the surface, but beneath that small layer, she hated his every move. He killed those he didn’t like, he mained others and hung them up for all to see… And he ruined what the wizarding world stood for.

Hogwarts was a shell of its former self. The students attended class, yes, but it was nothing like it was when she was a student. The classes were slow, numb, boring. She herself taught Transfiguration, spending nights running through the Forbidden Forest as a wolf. It was the only way she could get away. The Dark Mark on her arm would never fade, it would never falter. But it was the only way she could stay in her job, it was the only way she could defeat the evil man, or at least work in that direction. As her class wrapped up, she headed to her office, her thoughts still full of memories from the previous night. She had met with a few other professors, others like her who wanted to destroy Voldemort and see him gone, when they had dropped the bomb that they had found it. The final few Horocrux’s. With those found and destroyed, then just perhaps they would be able to defeat him once and for all. Yes, he had the Elder Wand, but surely there was more. Surely they would find a way to stop him and get rid of him.

She sat at her desk quietly, shaking her head. Why had the world changed in such a way? Why had he won? And what could she do to stop him?

She needed to get something good to eat. Maybe it was disgusting that Moriko did not quite enjoy cooked food, but it was only natural to her. For years she had been raised to eat the meat of the cows they killed, or whatever else came their way. She could just have whatever they figured out. She was the daughter of a God, they had plenty to choose from. Not that Moriko too advantage of that- all clans were equal, for the most part. There was a certain way things were meant to work, and she would never change that balance. She was lucky to have been left alive, lucky to be raised neither human nor wolf. She was simply there, a daughter doing what was best for her home. For years she practiced and learned how to be a wolf- she knew no other way of being. Her human parents were gone, they were dead. They had no impact on her, other than the fact that she knew she would hate humans forever.

Discounting a select few, of course.

They abandoned her, left her as a sacrifice so that the Gods would leave them be. It was disgusting to even think about- disgusting to imagine. Moro would never abandon her children, not even as she suffered with the poisoned bullet in her chest. She never ran, she faced her fears head on. Just as Moriko did now. She learned to eat cooked food, although plenty of it made her sick. She learned to eat mostly vegetarian for that reason- what was the point in eating meat when it tasted nothing like how it was meant to be? There were some things she enjoyed, some things she would always spend money on- but sometimes she needed to go back to the basics.

There were some places to pick up food that was raw. Butchers, they were called. They knew how to slice the meat up, getting all the best pieces off of whatever animal it came from. Moriko was willing to try anything- as long as it was meat, it was good. For so long she had been forced to avoid it… But she heard good things of this butcher. Things that made them seem a bit different.

She pushed open the door to be greeted by a mix of odd scents- all delicious, but a few out of place. Almost one that smelled like the portal, but it was covered up by something entirely different. A mix of things, none of which she could pick out quite yet. Back home it would have been easy, she would have been able to tell them apart with ease… But her skills had weakened as she grew to live in this new world. It was completely disgusting. Moriko wanted to stay in that other world, but she never could for long. Not with the dangers around her.

The room was empty. What exactly did she do to get the butcher out? It was really an odd place to be. ”Hello?” she spoke softly. Surely there was someone around somewhere- the door was unlocked, after all.

How had the world turned into this? Moriko would never understand the changes humans made to their already dreadful homes, to their already ruined world. This was yet another act full of violence, full of death and torture. There was no reason for any of this- none at all. Yet they decided to destroy their world by adding in one of the most disgusting events she had ever seen- The Purge.

This was senseless violence. It killed the poor, the kind, and allowed those full of hatred to continue on just as normal. Moriko may have wanted the destruction of humanity, but she certainly did not want to see it happen like this. She wanted something more sudden than simple torture. Every year this day came, businesses locked down and children hid away until the night was over. In the end, thousands died and no one spoke of it until the very next year. It passed on like it was normal, like it would continue for years and years as human destroyed itself.

And this year, Moriko was stuck in the middle of it. She had not meant to be out late, of course not. But someone had to finish locking up the zoo, to keep the animals safe overnight. There were guards placed throughout, but the large metal walls kept out most of the danger. The creatures were all on edge as she left, all of them knowing a terrible night was approaching. One of loud sounds, of violence and destruction around every corner. And Moriko could not get back to Kazuki’s apartment fast enough to hide away with him, as they often did. Instead… She would have to survive.

Without a weapon that seemed impossible, but perhaps she could do it?
