Hey guys!

Just wanted to pop in real quick and apologize for my absence the past couple of days. As many of you know, I started a new job as a summer teller at a credit union on Wednesday, and I've really??? never had a full time job before??? My retail job was part time, though I worked nearly full time some weeks, and that plus the type of job is kind of a big adjustment for me. My mom's calling it my first "adult" job - meaning it's fecking dull. Anyway, today was a lot better than the past couple of days, despite the fact that several people yelled at me for things that were definitely not my fault (ie. a lady's account was closed FOUR YEARS AGO and so obviously that was my fault) and I actually felt pretty good when i got home, so I'm hoping after another week or something I'll be able to be around in the evenings.

Also gonna throw out there that I'm gonna have to go to eastern Washington for training from June 5th through June 7th. I'm not sure of exact details of when I'm leaving (probably leaving the afternoon of June 4th) or coming back, but I'll post again when I'm getting ready to leave. c:

Regardless, it's a three day weekend so, aside from a few errands I need to run, I'll be around to hang out and post and such! <3

That's right y'all, spring break is here! And for once I'm actually doing things!!
Incredible!

Starting on Saturday, my best two college friends and I are going on a road trip in a loop through northern Oregon, along the coast, up to Seattle, then back. It's been a little bit of a struggle to get this trip together, especially in the last couple of days, because we originally had a fourth person in on this and she threw a fit over plans and got voted off the island. << However, since she dropped out, plans have been finalized and it's shaping up to look pretty fun! We're going to stay in Portland for two nights, hang out on the coast and have a bonfire with smores, stay in a yurt, possibly visit a haunted lighthouse, hike to the oldest spruce tree in Oregon, see Beauty and the Beast, and pet my dogs! I'm pumped!!

However, because of the kinds of places that we're staying and the semi-nomadic nature of this trip, I don't feel comfortable bringing my precious laptop along. I really don't want to lose it, have it stolen, or generally have anything bad happen to it, so I'm leaving it in my apartment. Even if I brought it, it's not super likely that I'd have all that much time to be around. However, in the case that we do spend a quiet evening somewhere or have some free time, I am bringing my kindle to write posts on and I'll peek in from my phone from time to time.

We're driving back from Seattle on Friday, which should take about 8 hours, give or take, and I'll at least pop in for a short time that night to say hello.

In the meantime, if you need anything from an administrator, please contact Sam or Amanda, as I will not answer PMs until I get back. I honestly don't think I've ever been away from EDS for this long??? So i'm going to have withdrawal symptoms lmao. And I'll miss you guys terribly. <3 I shall return with pictures and stories!

Hey guys! I'm sure you've noticed recently that there are 2 accounts and 2 apps for Lucifer up onsite - in the past couple of days we've heard of some confusion and controversy over our decision to allow two of the same character to be made, and, in light of this, my fellow admins and I would like to clarify our reasoning. This is not a decision we took lightly - Sam, Amanda, and I make all our decisions with care and as a team, and we try to consider everything from all angles before we settle on a course of action. This situation was no different, and, though we do welcome member input on how to handle this situation better in the future, our decision is final in this instance and will not change. If you wish to offer your own CONSTRUCTIVE opinion, please read this post thoroughly and PM an admin your thoughts.

Our category of animated original characters is one of the things here on EDS that grants the most freedom of expression, and, for that reason, it is very well loved. Over the past year, we've seen countless incredible AOCs come to life and thrive onsite, and we've had the amazing chance to see what your creative minds can come up with when given free reign. Where the category of San Francisco original can only get you so much as far as magic and monsters and such, AOCs allow us to reach farther into our imaginations and take inspiration from a wider range of things around us to form characters that otherwise would not have found their way onto EDS. This is a great opportunity, and we're so glad that so many of you have taken advantage of it. That being said, the AOC category is also undoubtedly the most controversial of our eight member groups, and, with it, we've faced a number of new challenges that we never expected and therefore don't have a standard set for. Because of these challenges (and a few other reasons), the AOC category is closed for the time being while we rewrite and clarify the rules and redefine the process of submitting AOCs for acceptance. In the meantime, below is our decision in regards to having two of the same AOC.

Having two of any character onsite is not something that anyone is really very fond of. There was frustration and unrest when the Tinkerbell movies were first added to the canon list and proposed a different, sweeter version of Tink who originated from the very same source material as Peter Pan Tink, and we wondered how things were supposed to work when the two were very obviously different - different personalities, different skills, different stories - but had the same origin. Would the two be made into a singular character, or would they remain separate? The solution that was reached was to allow two Tinkerbells onsite, each from their own world, and consider the two worlds alternate universes so that both could exist, but neither encroached on the other's canon. In this situation, lines are much more defined because there's actual movie evidence of differences that create boundaries for the characters, and therefore it's easy to see them as different people altogether, despite their similarities in appearance, name, and, to a point, origin.

When it comes to the AOC category, however, things are not nearly as easily defined. There becomes a lot of grey area when original worlds and ideas are introduced, and we can’t re-watch a movie to provide us the facts. So when this concern was brought to our attention with our first Lucifer on site, we looked back on what was already established onsite: Canon apps, AOC apps, the concept requests for said AOCs, and it brought us to the want ads. We were looking for all the information we had on hand to see where we could have foreseen this issue sooner.

Members are allowed to request whatever animated original characters they want and believe will be beneficial to the telling of their character's story. We don't have rules on want ads, though we do ask that everyone be courteous and cautious about requesting characters that fit into other movie canons so that whoever is involved in that canon has priority and the freedom to act as the authority for their canon (ie. requesting Figaro for cat plots without having a character from Pinocchio). Previously, we've never had any trouble with want ads for animated OC characters overlapping more than a bit in personality or in general aspects, such as species, as the worlds people request AOCs from tend to be incredibly diverse, and we've certainly never had two people request the same character from a specific source material by name for two different worlds. This is a brand new situation for everyone. In theory, one way to prevent a situation like this one would be for staff to police the AOC want ads so there aren't any doubles requested. However, this process would, by definition, be tedious and wrought with difficulties in defining what people could or could not request, never mind all the extra work that it would create for staff and members alike as well as the fact that it would slow down the entire process of posting want ads to a crawl. We don't want to do that. We want you to be able to request the characters that you believe will enrich your character's plotting without hitting speed bumps like this. Furthermore, a process of accepting AOC want ads would restrict members' abilities to request characters from the backstories they made up for their canons that don't have explicitly stated backstories, which isn't fair to players who want to delve deeper into that aspect of their character development. So would admins then have to preemptively prevent these requests by restricting the application process? We'd rather not - we like to see you guys be as creative as you want with your characters' backstories and the people they meet.

Let's say we restrict AOC want ads. What happens when we have two for the same character, but with different requirements then? Is it first come, first serve? Do we then have to decide between one or the other? Do we ask both members to collaborate on a single ad? Obviously, compromising is always ideal, but in a lot of situations there's problems there too - that character would likely come from two different worlds, which is not allowed (see: rules) unless the character possesses the specific ability to jump worlds, in which case they would still need to have an origin world and they would not be allowed to have a major role in a second canon, merely act as a bystander. Additionally, if both members have differing ideas on how they want the character to be played in order to fill the plots that they have in mind, things could get pretty messy. Again, I repeat, we want everyone to be able to request and have the characters that they want.

With two people wanting the same character and with different ads up for that character, each person gets to say what they want out of that character, and, ideally, it would be possible for someone to fill both ads at once. However, it's nearly impossible for there not to be a bias for one or the other, and it's not unreasonable for the owner of the secondary ad to want someone to focus specifically on what they ask for rather than compromising. Of course, once again, compromise is ideal, but difficult. Ultimately, both people don't have to agree to accept the one version of the character - we cannot tell both ad owners that they HAVE to accept the character into their canon. That's up to the member.

Now we have one version of the character filled, but there's still one other want ad that that character didn't fill. We discussed whether or not the other ad would have to come down since the character was technically filled, though for a different world, but ultimately we didn't feel that that was fair; asking such a thing would essentially force that member to either accept a character that was not meant for them as canon to try to salvage the plots they wanted for their world, or give up on those plots altogether, at least until the other member dropped the doubled character, if they ever did. Neither option is ideal.

There's countless ways to play the same character. This is what makes it fun to RP - you get to see other people's interpretations of the same character. When both characters, though originating from the same basic source material, are from different worlds, the possibilities are even greater. Think again about the Tinkerbells, or even the big bad wolves in Shrek and Hoodwinked vs Emmett's fairytale world. The way the story is told can make a huge impact on who the characters really are beyond their appearances and names. With this in mind and after some debate, we made the unanimous decision to allow a second Lucifer for the second want ad EXCLUSIVELY on the condition that they were significantly different than the first. Like other on-site doubles, there are bound to be some similarities, especially with characters so well-known and coming from the same source material, but that is where Sam, Amanda, and I would come in to review both applications, compare, and ultimately ensure that they were, in fact, different. If they weren't, changes would be requested before the second Lucifer could be accepted.

Having doubles onsite is not always fun. Doubled faces (which is not an aspect of this particular situation, but is somewhat common) and doubled characters can add complications to plots if you choose to see them that way, and it can be frustrating to have your character be "the other ____" to some characters. That happens with twin characters depending on which version of the character is introduced first. However, doubles can also open up a lot of doors: mistaken identity plots, mirror self plots, rivalries, allies, and a whole lot more depending on the situation and story. Or, if none of those are appealing, the two aren't required to plot together at all, and can exist in entirely separate circles. That's entirely up to the players and how they want to do their plotting.

In the end, we stand by this decision. We are aware it may not be a popular one, but we mean it in all good intent. It is meant as a compromise based in standards that are already established onsite, and we have considered what we could have done better given this brand new circumstance. This is not the sole purpose for revamping AOCs - that has been a long time coming - but it is an excellent example of what we could not have expected when we established the site over a year ago. We are constantly growing as a site and a community, and we know that growth comes with its ups and downs. We are taking what we have learned from this to inform our new and improved AOC rules, along with the other pitfalls and challenges that the category has presented. Among others, we are working on more specific criteria for characters and their worlds, a better and faster flow of communication, and more comprehensive rules on what the AOC category does and does not allow.

This thread is closed, as this is not an open debate and our decision is final. However, if you have constructive suggestions on how to better handle this sort of situation in the future, please PM an admin. This is not a guarantee that we will act on your suggestion, but we will take it into consideration and discuss as a team. Thanks to all for taking the time to read this through to completion. - All of staff
