It's simple really, go to THIS site and make square icons of your babies faces, and your face! It's just something cute and silly to pass the time.

It had been a rough night. For the most part, Esme didn't have to worry about clients touching her or making her feel uncomfortable; the bouncers ensured that nobody got close enough unless they paid for a private dance and even then- they remained close by in the event that a girl needed help. Typically, Esme could take care of herself, and had the man not got the jump on her in the alley after hours- she would have been able to handle it. As it was, the man had lurked by the staff entrance, waiting for her and as she came out alone, reaching into her bag for her phone and ear buds; he'd jumped her.

Mercifully, before anything could happen- one of the bouncers (also finished for the night) had come out and dealt with it swiftly. A talk with the police later, and Esme was desperate for some home comforts.

She was however, an extremely unfortunate cook- if it didn't involve a microwave she was quite lost- and so she'd found herself in one of the few places still open. Ordering a coffee and 'whatevers good' she curled up in her booth and pulled out a mirror, checking the status of her jaw after the bastard had grabbed it. A bruise was already beginning to form and she tsk'd, running her free hand through her hair. Wonderful.

"What an asshole..."

It had been one of those nights. The nights where one or two of the clubs patrons seemed to get the wrong idea about what kind of venue they were attending. While it was certainly not unusual for Esme to receive tips while dancing, it was generally considered uncouth for the clientele to demand she remove her clothes. The vulgar shouting and lewd gestures were regarded with disdain by most of the regulars, but a few of the more intoxicated guests soon got fired up and joined in the 'playful request' (as they would explain it as they were escorted off the premises). After a while, it all became too much, and she stopped her set early, descending from the stage toward the dressing room amid shouts of disapproval and disappointment.

She managed to keep her dignity until the door was shut behind her, and she walked with wobbly legs toward her chair, sinking into it with a trembling sigh. Batting her eyelashes in an attempt to stop the tears from starting, she leaned forward, elbows resting upon the vanity as her hands massaged her temples, fingers soon sneaking up to tangle into her hair.

Animals.

It wasn't until the knocking at the dressing room door became insistent that she finally noticed it, and in an uncharacteristically snappy voice, answered with a loud; "What?"

I don't often dream but when I do, fire is almost always present. In these rare instances, the dream follows the same course. There I stand, bound to a pyre like the witches of the medieval period. Ropes lashing my body to a tall wooden stake, my bare feet scratched by the straw beneath me. A man is speaking to me, holding a burning torch as he looks over my body. I do not know him but I know I do not want him to look at me like that; I know that the mere thought of him touching my body sickens me to my core. I spit at his face and that lecherous smile turns to something more deadly. An outrage that would prove my undoing. He speaks aloud to the baying crowd- their faces a mixture of savage delight and terror for my fate. I cannot speak, seemingly paralysed by fear as he announces my crimes, my fate. The words escape me, but I catch snippets.

gypsy

witchcraft

He throws the torch into the straw and the flames ignite instantly. Building up around me, licking at my heels, the cotton shift that allows me some small shred of dignity in my final moments. I begin to choke on the smoke, tears streaming as it stings my eyes, sweat causing the dress to cling to me. Darkness begins to creep around the edges of my vision, death stalking me like a starving wolf. Nobody comes for me, they only watch as I stand there, burning alive.

I wake up screaming on those nights, and find myself curled up on the sofa with a coffee, unable to fathom sleeping again after escaping from that nightmare. I've seen therapists, consulted online dream journals and can find no reasonable explanation for the horrors that haunt my unconscious mind. I have never experienced fire outside of a camping trip, my childhood was a happy one. There are no forgotten traumas in my life that could manifest in such a way. There is simply no explanation, other than a potent imagination.

Odd, that my subconscious mind would seek to terrorise me with my greatest fear.

✧✧✧

There is something so natural about dancing. Whenever I get up on that stage and let the music take me, I feel perfectly at home: like I am doing what I was always meant to do. Often, I close my eyes and lose myself to the music. It's often better that way, I don't see the faces of the men below when I do that. Not that they're bad people, I certainly don't feel that same overwhelming sense of disgust or fear that I do in my nightmare; I know they don't mean me harm. They wouldn't lay a hand on me without my consent, for the most part. I know I'm safe. The last time a patron of the club got too handsy, he was escorted off the premises immediately. Still, even the most talented of dancers can suffer from stage fright when all eyes are on them, and I'm no different.

Often, when people learn what my profession is, they respond in one of two ways. The first will laugh and make a lewd joke about wanting a private dance. Those I can deal with, they're only messing around- usually without a shred of judgement. It's the latter I have trouble with, the raised eyebrow, the not so subtle look up and down my figure as they ask me why I couldn't do something 'decent' to earn money. While great strides have been made in my profession, some people still don't seem to understand that an exotic dancer does not mean a stripper, not every time. Yes, some of my costumes border a little on the risque- but I have never, nor will I ever; strip naked for money. I have nothing against the women who have the confidence or desire to do so, but it's not for me. I enjoy the dance, I enjoy the acrobatics involved when dancing with a pole... but stripping for the enjoyment of others? It's not something I intend on doing.

Exotic dancing might not be the most respectable of professions, but it's my profession- and it puts food on the table.

NAME:
Esme Agnes Bellerose

Esme - shortened version of Esmeralda
Agnes - her birth name in the original novel
Bellerose - means 'beautiful rose' in french

PLAYBY:
Jessica Parker Kennedy. Chelle suggested her as a face for Esmeralda and she's just utterly perfect. She has the sass, her hair works (not quite Esme's glorious mane, but it'll do just fine) and her role as Max on Black Sails really does quite lend her to the role of Esmeralda quite nicely.

BIRTHDAY:
9th June

OCCUPATION:
Exotic Dancer. If there's one thing that Esmeralda is immensely skilled at, it's dancing. I imagine when she first crossed over she was desperate to find her footing in this new world, and went for something she could manage. While she isn't exactly comfortable with the assumptions and stereotypes that follow her occupation (for example, she does not remove her clothes)- it puts food on the table, and allows her to do something she enjoys. When she's dancing, she can forget her troubles.

POWERS & ABILITIES:
She doesn't have any particular powers to speak of. What was perceived as witchcraft was simple theatrics and misdirection. She is as flexible as any career dancer would be, and quite fast on her feet but nothing superhuman or abnormal.

PERSONALITY & BACKGROUND:
Esme has come from a very hard background. While it's never exactly stated in the Disney film if she was a changeling or not, I like the idea of her having been stolen by gypsies as a baby to be honest. Regardless, she's been raised in severe poverty with prejudice following her every step of the way. It has molded her into an opportunistic, persevering and strong young woman. She has a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong, and does her best to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. It has also left her with more than few trust issues but, for one of her background- can she really be blamed?

CANON CUTOFF:
Just after Quasimodo saves her from the pyre. I left the details of her crossing purposefully vague, to allow for other canons from the film to essentially 'interfere'. Perhaps Quasimodo himself carried her across, or maybe Phoebus? Perhaps Frollo kidnapped her during the chaos and brought her over. Who knows? Either way, she certainly did not cross of her own accord.
