To say Ailura was particular was an understatement.

It wasn’t that she was a perfection or that she expected quality above all else. No, her tastes were far more subjective, and ever changing. From her favorite drink to her favorite companions, she discarded them for new ones on a regular basis. It didn’t mean that they were poor choices to begin with, and it certainly didn’t mean that they might come around again sometime. But for times like now, she was out of both. The yokai woman didn’t know what or who to spend her time and money on… So she did what any fickle woman in need of some gratification would do: she hired someone.

Tonight she was trying something new. In the past she might have rolled her eyes at the thought of needing to pay someone to keep her company. Allura was good at attracting pretty young things to her side (even if she didn’t want to keep them there), though it wasn’t beyond her to flash some cash and offer free drinks to entice. But now… she was even looking forward to this little experiment of hers. This wasn’t a hired date for necessity. No, this was solely because she wanted to. She liked the bit of power that came with being the one that was footing the bill. If she liked it enough, she might make a habit of it - she just had to meet the man in question.

Luckily he was right on time to the cocktail bar she’d picked for their little rendezvous. She recognized him in an instant, thanks to the photo provided by his employer. She gave him a wave with the flick of her wrist, gesturing for him to join her at the tall table she’d reserved, with barstools for just the two of them. He did not disappoint, but there was something about the man she couldn’t have sensed from a picture alone. Something different, something familiar but unfamiliar at the same time. If she had to give it a name, she’d say he felt a bit… canine. This could be interesting.

As he neared the, she gave a sly smile. “Glad you could make it,” she said, as if he had much of a choice. She might have been paying the man, but she didn’t necessarily want to make it too obvious. This might have been all fun and games to her, but to him it was just another day at work. And speaking of which, she owed him a little something. She stood to greet him.
“I’m Ailura,” she said, slipping a few crisp fifty dollar bills into his pocket. “Daemyn, is it?” she asked without saying a word about the payment she’d passed him. That’s the way it worked, wasn’t it? Allura might not have liked rules, but she knew to follow them when it suited her. She had agreed to pay the flat rate for his first hour, and then she’d see where it went from there.

The yokai turned her attention her handsome escort and poised one very important question, sliding over the cocktail menu to him as she did so. “So, what’s your poison?”

As winter melted into spring and the days grew longer and longer, Ailura was having mixed feelings about it all. She didn’t like the way the evenings dipped into cold temperatures in the cooler months of the year; rather unbearable without her usual fur coat. But she did like the dark nights and long shadows that resulted. Soon enough it would still be daylight when she left work, but today she could enjoy the dusk that surrounded her. The red-orange sky started to fade into a deep blue, and as Ailura stepped out of her office building she took a moment to breathe in the twilight.

That was when something - or rather someone - caught her eye. They passed in an instant, walking right by her on the sidewalk. Whether it was his manner of dress or the way he wasn’t rushing home like everyone else just getting off work, something about this stranger struck her as a little different. Ailura changed course, no longer headed for her apartment but headed straight after him.

She followed a few paces behind, the toes of her shoes stepping on his shadow as many times as she could. She continued like this for several blocks, half cautious. Ailura needed a few moments to see if her guess about this man in front of her was correct. There was something a little inhuman about that, but it would take some time to see if her hunch held any weight.

Now that she'd been in San Francisco several years and she had explored the extent of her powers in the city, she was much more attuned to them on this sort of the portal. While they still operated on relatively the same rules, she'd found limitations that she hadn't before. One of them was the difference someone from across the portal made. They had been much easier to spot in a crowd this way, and that meant she didn't have to keep guessing. While she fed off the ill will and malicious feelings of the humans she met, Ailura had found it was a little harder to pick up on those feelings on those from the other side. So when she came across this person who was harder to read, it struck her curiosity.

When she got bored of simply following him and the crowd thinned, Ailura shed what little stealth she had and quickened her pace a few steps. When she fell in line with the man she'd been following, she sent him a sideways glance and a sly smile. "You're not from around here, are you?" She asked, a bit of a tease in her tone. Ailura usually didn't open with human small talk or niceties. If she was right that this person was not from this world - and likely not human - she didn't think he'd mind.

It was rare that Ailura ever wandered outside her comfort zone. In fact, she went to great lengths to maintain the lifestyle she'd secured for herself, and that was just about the only thing she'd put so much effort into. This became an issue when it came to her dual life - not that of a cat turned human, but a cat turned yokai. The longer Ailura spent ignoring the nagging spirit in the back of her mind, the louder it grew, and the stronger the need was for her to return. Perhaps she'd spend a weekend skulking through the animated realm, in casual pursuit of those she was destined to haunt. She cared little for the family that drove her master to insanity and then death, but to shut the old woman up, the bakeneko had to at least feign some interest. When the whining ceased and the spirit was satisfied again, she'd return to her life of luxury.

Ailura was just back from the other world, her power still freshly replenished and her spirit currently content. And on the first few days back to the daily grind of office life, work wore heavier on her than usual. Simple tasks seemed even more boring and days dragged on like they'd never end. She'd needed a little something to keep her going through the week - something a little stronger than coffee. Part of it was the excess energy she'd acquire while in her home world, and part of it was just plain itching for a fight. She couldn't really pin down the feeling, but oftentimes Ailura simply wanted to raise a little hell. So, as she left work and didn't even bother to change into something a little more club- and a little less work-friendly, it was all that was on her mind.

The bakeneko was in rare form tonight, fast with her words and clear in her demands to the wait staff when she entered the nightclub. "I'll need two bottles: one Patron Silver, one Grey Goose. Various mixers and a table for maybe eight." It was more a statement than a request, but they knew her well enough to know she meant business when she showed up. This place was one of her favorites, perfectly situated halfway between work and home and they never asked questions. She gave her ever-so-charming smile as they hopped to the task, pleased to see them scurry as if she put the fear in them. It was still too early to really get the club going on a Thursday, but soon enough people would be pouring into the venue, thirsty for some cheap drinks and loud music. She settled into her reserved table and sipped a cosmopolitan as she texted just about everyone in her contacts. 'What: Bottle Service. Where: Harlot nightclub. When: ASAP.'

As soon as her friends (or close enough to friends as Ailura had) showed up, the party was really going. The music had been bumped up to ten and the dance floor was steadily filling up. The hours flew by once things got rolling and Ailura was adequately distracted, if not having a bit of fun trying to pick which couple she'd most break up in the most dramatic way possible. That was usually her idea of a good time, but tonight, there was still a pull, the strangest feeling that she wasn't satisfied. Ailura stood from her table and squeezed past the strangers that had now found themselves seated there. She was less concerned with who they were than how much entertainment value they provided, and these people were boring. She needed to find some new plaything.

With another cosmo in hand, she was on the prowl. She slinked through the club with ease, having shed her blazer and extra layers, looking perfectly comfortable in five inch heels and a cropped jumpsuit. Her ghostly white hair was down, a curtain that could easily cover her face if need be. It was awfully useful in hiding her true intention when she wanted to laugh at the chaos she caused but could not. It would ruin all the fun if she got caught, of course. She found one seemingly unsuspecting target at the bar: an awfully handsome man with the sort of aura that instantly drew her toward him, though she couldn't pin down what it was. 'With an equally handsome shadow,' she thought, admiring it as the club's lights rotates and strobed all around them. She stood behind him, with enough distance that allowed her to go unseen. 'Let's try something new,' she told herself, taking a purposeful step on the dark shape on the floor.

It wasn't long before he moved and - as hoped - his shadow did not. It gave a little resistance, like a sweater snagged on something sharp. But with the slightest increase in pressure under her heel, it separated itself from its owner. Ailura was half surprised it worked. After all, she had experience bending herself to the shadows to move unseen by human eyes... but this? She'd never bent a shadow before. A wicked smile curled on her lips at her success, and she swiftly bent to take her prize in hand.

As a blanket statement for all the below requests, ANIMATED ORIGINALS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN BY GUESTS! You can see more info about those rules here if you'd like more information on that.

Because of the origin of this story, I will ask that playbys be of Japanese or at least Eastern Asian descent. Creative liberties aside, these are characters straight out of Edo period Japan, so please keep that in mind. I am plenty happy to help if need be, as I know how challenging it can be to find resources for that perfect face! So by all means please reach out. I'm not going to put your choice under a microscope, if you choose a Chinese actor who's been in Japanese film or a Japanese actress who's done a K-drama, whatever, it's all good to me and I know there is a lot of crossing over when it comes to East Asian film and tv. Ailura's playby is Korean so I can't judge too harshly heh.

And lastly, a lot of this is up for interpretation! I'd prefer that you speak to me directly if you're interested in any of these characters, because I don't have a lot set in stone. Ailura's app (located here for your reference) is only from her point of view and her limited scope of understanding, but I have an idea of the story in general and would love to share. Because it's not so rigid, I have more of an ~aesthetic~ I'd like to follow instead of a timeline. Like I said, I'd love to chat!

This first request is a big one, quite open and incredibly varied. Here you would have a lot of freedom to establish the "family" that Ailura haunts as her yokai self on the other side of the portal.

Quick outline of their relationship is: This noble family is responsible for the death of Ailura's once-owner's son, and when said owner died her angry spirit possessed the cat and turned it into a bakeneko! Could have been a direct responsibility (e.g. caught him canoodling with the lady of the house and put to death???) or indirect (e.g. he was working maintenance and was fatally injured on the job), that would be up for discussion. Ghostly hauntings ensue and it gets dark. The bakeneko is not one to just go bump in the night. She drives people to insanity, to suicide, to murder. So this family, whether or not they were shady to begin with, now have this black cloud of a curse hanging over them.

Another point is that Ailura's origin story takes place over a hundred years ago. Anyone who would have been involved in the death of the owner's son is long dead. But the bakeneko lives on, and her spirit knows no other purpose but to terrorize them. So you can play with the fact that this once grand and noble house has fallen to ruin because of her, the story of them trying to hide this shame of having a yokai haunt them, or their struggle to exorcise her? Lots of possibilities!

She currently has no idea where they are, and the cat part of herself could not care less. Buuut.... the longer she stays away from the portal, the louder the nagging of the nasty spirit inside of her gets. She's bound by this cruel fate to haunt the family until the bloodline dies, essentially. So the one thing that would turn her life upside down would be to find a member of this family again. At this point, she has not even thought it possible, so I can't say exactly how she'd react, but I can promise fun would ensue huehuehue.

Like I said, this is very open to names, faces, familial structure and the like. It makes no difference to Ailura (she'll haunt either way) so these are all up for discussion.

This request is a bit of a vague one, as I probably have the least solid ideas here. Basically Ailura is a fairly young yokai, as far as their standards go. She's maybe a couple hundred years old (she's lost count tbh) but there are many others of her kind in the world. Thing is, she's never met another yokai and only identifies herself as one because her "family" has noted it/described her as such. Her knowledge of them is just that of what she's heard from stories...

I'm imagining this character as either a bakeneko like herself or a nekomata (a similar sort of cat yokai), and one that has been around the block so to speak and knows the ropes better than she does. She acts very instinctively, very quick on her feet and has basic intuition and desires. There is not a lot of thinking through and she does more things for pleasure than any sort of main goal (ultimately, the more demonic part of her is driven to kill all members of the above family, but she hushes it up whenever she can). This character would be similar enough that perhaps they had a similar aim or purpose but have grown beyond that, due to completion or just the passing of time: up to you truly.

Their relationship wouldn't really be a romantic one, but I will say the closest she might get to some sort of fondness for another would be someone that understood her more than any human does. It would probably annoy her that he knows more about her and her nature than she does, whether or not he's condescending about it, and she would pointedly not like him for a time. In the end she'd see him as potentially useful in learning about herself and their shared world, but expect her to be (literally) catty about it in the meantime. Like I said, nothing solid and I'm interested to develop her more and I think this would be a fun way to throw a wrench in her cushy little life at the moment~

So much about this is open! Wow I mean really. I have referred to this yokai as "he" because he strikes me as masculine, but I am open to a feminine interpretation or otherwise any gender really. Name, face, age (as long as it's older, doesn't have to be by much), occupation, personality, species even, it's all available. Above is a gif from Soo Joo's photo shoot with G-Dragon for Vogue Korea, but really it's just a placeholder!

And lastly, another broad request. "Pack" is a crude word for it and reminds Ailura of dogs but what else would you call a group of crazy yokai girls on the prowl? This is open to yokai guys of a similar temperament, but hey, let's just call them the pack. Ailura is usually a solitary creature but who am I if not a bad good mother who wants to see their child surrounded by people who will ruin enrich their lives?

Basically Ailura needs party friends, gal pals, or some other sorts of companions that will relate to her shenanigans in some way. They can each have their own very different personalities and can have all sorts of relationships with Ailura, but I wanted to spice things up for her a bit. Right now she's pretty much a loner that collects one or two other people and gets everyone drunk and hyped up for the hell of it. I imagine that showing up with a group of attractive people would make her a lot less suspicious, and moreover, less creepy in general. Don't get me wrong, I love her creepy side but she doesn't want to give herself away too easily. A pack would be a perfect disguise to her darker motives hehe.

The idea is that these are all some sort of yokai (though you may have heard them referred to as mononoke or other names)! Think kitsune, kappa, tengu, and oni and all the wonderfully terrifying things in Japanese folklore. I know only basic facts about a few of these "species" of yokai so I'd be interested in learning some more about them, to give a more complete and authentic impression of them on board. The connecting theme is that they're up to mischief and they know how to have a good time... I just kinda wanna wreak havoc ok? <_< Also! If you think an existing character you have might fit the bill, throw them my way - I'm particularly looking for spooks but feel free to toss similar ideas at me.

I have a couple of face suggestions to give an example of the sort of thing I'm looking for. This is not an inclusive list of course but just a starting point! Top faces are: Tao Okamoto (could go edgy or sophisticated, Fernanda Ly (Chinese but wow I love this hair), and Issa Lish (Japanese/Mexican with really unique features). Basically the tall skinny supermodel type heh but at the end of the day this is open!

On weekends its wasn't unheard of for Ailura Kai not to step out of the house until the stroke of midnight. When there was delivery to be had and practically every form of entertainment she'd ever need in her apartment, she found it hard to justify leaving. Since moving in with her new roommate, things had gone just swimmingly for the yokai woman. She needed little as far as basic necessities went, but wonted for much all the same. Luckily for her, it was like she'd won the lottery when it came to Hidukul... Ailura was not one to have any qualms in making deals with the devil, much less a rental agreement. Food was in ample supply in case she wished to feed her gluttonous side, as well as a number of other luxuries she didn't know she needed until they were presented to her. And with all of this in little to no cost to her, it left the bakeneko with a little extra cash. Okay, a lot of extra cash.

Ailura liked to spend her disposable income like anyone else in this great big city - on wild parties and raucous, drunken nights out. Even Monday through Thursday, she could be found at any number of clubs and bars, now a regular at several of her favorites. As the human restraints of hunger, exhaustion, and pain did not affect her in the same way, she had little to concern herself with in the "consequence" department. Similarly, the alcohol she consumed on a daily basis did not produce quite a strong reaction in her as it did in other. Yes, she did get a sort of 'buzz,' but on long, crazy nights it was not the liquor that made her come back for more.

It was more common to find the mercurial young woman to be the one providing drinks to others on her nights out, fueling the fires for the already dizzy drunks she surrounded herself with. That was how she'd met one Miss Yuu Susuwatari. Since the two had been acquainted, they'd become closer, seeing each other on a more frequent basis. It hadn't taken long for the bakeneko to determine the other woman was similarly not of this world. Truth be told, the fact that she hadn't been able to bend the girl to her wicked whims had bothered her at first. But as it became more apparent Yuu was fun to have around, she decided it was for the better. She kept company with the sprite, if not just to have someone who could actually keep up with her inhuman party habits.

This evening was going according to her usual schedule; Ailura had just walked out of her building at 12:45 am. She knew well enough that any party worthwhile wouldn't be starting for another hour at least, but tonight she had another stop to make. With few difficulties, the tall blonde hailed a cab and with even fewer words, she directed the driver to her companion's apartment. 'Friend' was not a term Ailura threw around loosely, but she supposed if anyone came close, it would be Yuu. And speaking of, she hardly heard from the woman since they'd made plans to go out tonight. Not odd considering Ailura's hot-and-cold mannerisms when it came to using technology (in love with it one minute, loathing it the next), but the bright little sprite might have at least wondered where she was. As the car pulled up to the building in question, Ailura rolled down the window and whipped out her mobile phone. Within seconds she'd sent a message to her partner-in-crime for the evening. 'Downstairs. Get in, we're going clubbing.'
