I walk my days on a wire
It had been months since Eilian had stepped foot outside of his apartment. Upon Levina's command he had become a willing hermit, remaining within the confines of his home and ceasing all but minimal contact with the outside world. He had his groceries delivered. He worked from home, and for the months he remained a prisoner within his own household- the only person he truly socialised with was the Queen herself; everyone else was kept at arms length through brief phone calls or vaguely worded emails. This was his punishment, isolation from the world for associating with those the Queen despised.

Or rather, associating with one man in particular.

Eilian had not heard from Maixent since that morning, and he was relieved. The addition of the King back into his life was what had ruined everything after all. Sleeping with the man had made things infinitely worse. To continue that relationship was the very last thing Eilian wanted to do with his time.

Of course, with isolation from the world came a gradual fade of memory. As time wore on, Eilian found himself unable to recall the little details of his previous life. His time as a rabbit becoming less and less tangible until it seemed more like the recollection of a fond dream than a life fully lived. His situation too, seemed more and more bizarre by the day. Who was Levina to him, truly? Why did his mind look upon her and scream Monarch?

Upon receiving permission to leave his home-turned-prison, Eilian allowed his feet to carry him on auto-pilot. As he looked up at the sign, faded at the edges and a little battered by the elements, he felt a surge of familiarity and fondness. It wasn't until the door opened and a face appeared in the doorway that he finally understood the sensation, and he smiled up at his old friend.

"Gregory... it has been a while. How are you?"

It had been a quiet morning in the Knick Knack Nook, with barely a patron to be seen. Greg took advantage of peaceful moments like these to partake in some of his favourite relaxing hobbies. He sat at his desk, pouring over a complicated jigsaw puzzle of a collection of brightly coloured sweets. The project had sat there for days, waiting patiently for him to come over and add a few more pieces whenever he had a spare moment.

Outside, the sun was shining, and the warmth it cast over him as he worked only added to his enjoyment. Every so often Greg glanced up to enjoy the bright colours outside his window that this weather created; summer was such a pleasant time of year, and he endeavoured to enjoy it, even from inside the shop.

After one fleeting glimpse, Greg did a double take. He had not expected to see his friend stood outside; not after such a long absence, and certainly not looking so listless. Throughout the previous year, it had been common for Eilian to pop in for a cup of tea and a chat, but those visits had ceased months ago. During one of their last meetings, the boy had mentioned some very concerning information, about being forced into situations that made him uncomfortable, and as a result Greg had been worried sick ever since.

His life had always been a peaceful one, and he did not know how to react to situations which seemed potentially very dangerous. After a few weeks of no communication from Eilian, he had even wondered whether he should phone the police, but had talked himself out of it – worried that he might have misjudged the situation, and would only make things worse by getting involved.

Now that he saw him outside, and in what seemed to be one piece, he felt both overwhelmingly relieved and guilty for not having done more. The man got quickly to his feet, and rushed to open the door and call his friend inside. Though his response before may have been lacking, at least he had a chance to be helpful again now if anything had gone wrong.

“Far too long,” he began, in response to Eilian’s greeting, before brushing off his question with a dismissive wave of his hand. “I’m fine, of course I’m fine. How are you? It’s very unlike yourself to pass up a cup of tea – I’ve got some peppermint in, if you’re interested.” Though he assumed it was an unspoken inevitability that they would discuss the other man’s disappearance, Greg saw no reason to stress him out by interrogating him before he was even sitting down. Giving a friendly smile, he pushed the door open a little wider, making room for Eilian to enter.

Normality was a rare thing for Eilian in recent weeks, and he grasped on to the offer with a desperate sense of gratitude, smiling warmly up at Gregory as he ducked through the entrance of the storefront. "Yes... Yes I am- so sorry about that," he murmured almost absently once inside, scanning the room for anything that might spark a memory. He found nothing, save fond recollections of sitting drinking tea and eating cake with an old friend. Nothing that gave him any clues to his past, save for the simple fact that he had a friend to do such trivial things with.

"I've not been myself."

While a true enough statement, the excuse tasted bitter on his tongue. It was lacking in such important details; such as the fact that he had been locked away under a house arrest imposed by a woman whose influence over him was unhealthy at best, terrifying at worst. It failed to explain how his mind had been perhaps irreparably damaged, leaving core memories similarly locked out of his reach. Still, it was all Eilian could bring himself to offer his friend in that moment, and the smile turned almost apologetic as he turned back to Gregory.

"Yes please, that would be delightful."

Grateful that his friend readily agreed to the refreshments, Greg flipped the sign on his front door to ‘closed’, before following Eilian through the shop and into the kitchen. Though his smile had been warm and genuine, the man definitely did not seem to b engaging with reality in the manner that he was usually capable. In the months that he had been visiting the Knick Knack Nook, Eilian had always been very sensible, organised, and slightly highly strung. Now, he seemed downright dozy, not quite focussed on anything in particular, and being very vague in his description of where he had been.

All of this resulted in Greg getting very worried about what happened in the interim. He suspected that the dangerous people Eilian mentioned might be involved with some sort of unwholesome substances, and this behaviour was only adding to his suspicions. It was something that he was determined to get to the bottom of, although he hadn’t any ideas yet about how he might help.

Busying himself with making the tea, Greg took a moment to offer his friend another sympathetic smile. “Well, who have you been, then?” he joked, still worried that asking direct questions might be too intrusive, but wanting to begin gently broaching the subject of his friend’s disappearance nonetheless. “I’ve been very worried, you know.”

I walk my days on a wire
Gregory's joke, though arguably terrible, brought a wry smile to the rabbits lips as he settled into a seat, contemplating the answer. Somewhere in the depths of his mind, ravaged with anxiety as it was, echoed a similar question in a voice all at once familiar and yet not; who are you? He shook his head abruptly, as though seeking to shed the memory and looked up at Greg with wide eyes.

"I don't quite know. I've just been... muddling along, I suppose. I know I am Eilian Blanche. I know I am an accountant, and I know you are my friend. I recognise my clients but whenever I try to recall past events, my childhood...where I lived before here... it's all a mess. Jumbled. Vague."

Frustration clouded his features and he sighed heavily, reaching up to pinch the bridge of his nose, counting silently to ten in an attempt to steady his racing heart. "It is all incredibly stressful."

Accepting the tea when Greg brought it over, Eilian cupped it between his hands and gazed down into the swirling liquid, taking comfort in its simple familiarity. "I'm terribly sorry for worrying you. I have been cooped up at home for the last-" here he hesitated, unsure exactly how much time had passed since Levina had confined him to his apartment. "while. I had to, for my health." It wasn't technically a lie, he rather got the feeling that to leave without permission from the redhead would have been very bad for his wellbeing. "I'm back now, though. I just need to get my affairs in order..."

Greg was pleased that his joke brought a smile to the other man's face, but was more troubled than before when he responded. From what he had said previously, Greg had assumed that Eilian simply felt a little bit out-of-sorts; stress, brought on by a bad situation involving these people that he said he could not avoid. That had been a frightening thought, but to hear he had no memory of his childhood? That was truly horrifying. That was not something that happened spontaneously without reason.

"Amnesia?" Greg asked, looking for clarification regarding what Eilian was telling him. He found it difficult to believe that such a young man could be having memory problems, and was sure that nothing good could have caused it. At best, perhaps he had suffered a blow to the head, but at worst, it could be life threatening. Neither of those options were something that Greg was comfortable with happening to his close friend, and he hoped that he would be able to help him find a solution.

"You mentioned that you lived in a small cottage," he offered, scanning Eilian's face for any sign of recognition. "And about your father doing DiY." Perhaps he had misunderstood him - maybe the man was just experiencing mere confusion, rather than having no recollection at all. If anything was going to trigger thoughts of his childhood, Greg reasoned, then it would be memories of his parents. They were such a significant part of a person's life, it would be impossible to forget them.

"... have you asked a doctor about all of this?" he asked. Hearing Eilian say that he needed 'to get his affairs in order' made an uncomfortable knot tighten in Greg's stomach, and he felt quite sick. That expression had so many negative connotations - it was what people said when they were expecting to die - and he refused to accept that this was an option here. A doctor would be able to help his friend, he was sure of it.

I walk my days on a wire
“I suppose so, though I can’t for the life of me imagine what might have happened to cause that. The only other person I’ve reconnected with since… well, since ‘losing myself’ hasn’t been particularly helpful.”

He cringed, trying not to think too hard about that dinner with Levina and what had been said and done. The thought that someone had such control over his life and refused to help him put together the pieces was horrifying, perhaps more so than the nature of said control in the first place. Knowing what he did of himself, Eilian simply couldn’t fathom how he had come to be in such a contract with a woman such as Levina Reine. She was domineering, controlling, downright terrifying- what could he possibly have sought to gain through their connection?

Was there ever really a choice? Her manner had given him cause to doubt.

As Greg recalled what little he knew of Eilian’s past, he looked at the older man with a light frown- trying to force some spark of recognition. Images flashed across his memory but none of them made sense; a family of rabbits, living in a small cottage in a vibrant forest of pink and purple trees. Reaching out to his siblings (all grey and brown like their parents) and seeing small white paws before his eyes. “I’m not sure, I don’t know… It’s almost as though I can recall but… everyone looks so abnormal. I’m sure it’s not normal to recall your family as clothed rabbits…” he laughed nervously, taking a sip of tea, eyes darting around the room as he sought a new topic of conversation.

“I don’t want to see a doctor. They make me nervous.”

What didn’t, these days?

“So how have you been? Aside from worried over silly old me.”

Greg frowned. Again, Eilian was mentioning these questionable friends of his, who clearly made him feel uncomfortable. As before, it made him very worried, especially now his friend clearly seemed very unwell; could this have been caused by some sort of substance abuse? It seemed the most likely explanation, given the information which had been provided - but Eilian definitely didn't seem the sort to get mixed up in such unsavoury activities, which brought the question to Greg's mind: had someone else done this to him?

"And who might that be?" he asked, hoping to be able to confirm or deny his suspicions with the response.

"I can't say I've ever had that problem, no," Greg added, at Eilian's description of his memories, "Although I really don't think rabbits are your biggest worry, at the moment. Remembering things with added... embellishments, is better than not remembering anything at all, isn't it? What are the rabbits doing? Are they things you'd expect a family of yours to do?"

The older man elected to ignore Eilian's question regarding how he had been; he really did not think it was important at that given moment. Though he appreciated that his friend might not want to share all of the information with him, and might want to keep his health concerns private, there was one thing that Greg hoped they could settle before the other man left. He needed to see a professional. Greg's brow furrowed, and he looked at Eilian with an expression such as a teacher might use on a pupil when trying to coax them into doing something. "Please go and see a doctor. You need help."
