She never liked it in this world.

Everything about it creeped her out. The water was different, the people were different, everything. Of course, it didn’t help that there was some evil force stalking apparently everyone, trying to… Do something to them all. She hadn’t asked what happened if the darkness got to someone, and Nessie wasn’t 100% sure she ever wanted to find out either. All she wanted to do, honestly, was to go home. Who didn’t? She wanted everything to be normal again. Normal, and safe, and comforting. Not that she really had a home. The last one was stolen away, destroyed by whatever the creatures were. She was alone now, without even a rubber duck around to cheer her up.

Even if she didn’t want to be here, Nessie knew the importance of it. Perhaps she could find the resistance and help them fight, but what could she really do? Cry? As far as the monster knew, there was no shortage of water within their ranks, and she highly doubted any sort of monster out here would really be afraid of crying. Would they even fight her? To many people Nessie herself was a monster, even if she could barely hurt a fly. The darkness was different though, she was sure of it. And she’d continue to avoid it so she wouldn’t have to fight.

Entering what was apparently a ‘safe zone’, all the monster wanted to do was relax. Take a break. Not have to think about the world around her, only focusing on what was in front of her. Nessie didn’t want to forget herself, not in a million years- even if her new life was certainly better than her old one. She had a job now. Friends. People who cared- even if they didn’t actually know what she was. Perhaps some of them would learn, but it certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world if that fact was never shared.

Her eyes landed upon something strange- a bush? It was covered in berries of a strange color, almost a red-orange… Definitely not a color she had seen before. Sniffing them, the beast had no idea what they were. Could she eat them? Nessie was certainly hungry, but she certainly didn’t want to risk death either. Maybe waiting was just the best choice of action. Still, she could look at the berries. Maybe over time she could figure it out. What if humans had these in their world? Now that would be interesting.

She almost didn’t notice the sounds behind her, but the cracking of a branch alerted her to the presence of someone… Or something. She felt her breath catch in her throat. Maybe she didn’t need the berries. Maybe death was right in front of her?

Twilight washed the world in blues and the moon had risen early tonight. It was rare that the nymph girl got to see the last rays of light setting over the horizon. But the moon's light creeping over the line of trees in the distance shook her from her sleep-like state and allowed her to move once more. That morning she'd planted herself in one of the safe zones designated by the resistance, instead of joining them in their camp. Sometimes she'd sink her roots in where they stayed, keeping to the edge of the encampment to stay out of anyone's way. It made more sense to her to attempt some sort of camouflage by not placing herself in the middle of where they were gathered, as if they camped around the tree. The naturally dense foliage outside of the encampments meant it was easier for her to hide in plain sight.

Stretching her limbs, now free from the extraneous branches and leaves, that was just what she had done that morning. With the dying daylight to show her the way, she would make her way toward where the portal would reappear, but slowly. The shift was never really a swift one, though the effect of the darkness hampered it greatly. Her body was stiffer than usual, her limbs ached from reaching up to the sky for hours on end. Years and years of this and she'd never tire of it, but the changes in her routine were felt. And they almost hurt. It was not a pain that felt sharp or strongly, but one that was persistent and lingered long - an aching that made her feel sluggish and slow.

Being a creature of the night did not hamper her ability to move through the forest after the sun set, but there was something she was more fearful of, and that was the beasts that roamed the wilderness in the dark. Zoë was a peaceful nymph, and would likely not fare well if she were confronted by something lurking in the darkness. This was where being within the confines of the rebel encampments was a positive; she was surrounded by others and less vulnerable to an attack. She could always run, but... feeling as groggy as she did now, she doubted she could get very far before she was caught. She hoped being in a safe zone would lessen the chance of being found in a compromising situation, but in this world, one could never be too safe.

That was what she was reminding herself as, slowly as she was making her way back to civilization, she heard the approach of an unfamiliar creature. At the the first sounds she paused, listening to the crunch of grass and twigs underfoot, smelling the scent of it in the air. Cautiously, she crept forward, crouching closer to the ground and moving with more precision though her joints ached as she did so. Silently she made her way through the underbrush, seeking a better view of the animal that had come into her space. The nymph girl was surprised it wasn't truly an animal at all - or, one she was not familiar with. This creature certainly wasn't of her world and she was fairly certain it was not dangerous - that is, it didn't have the stench of darkness on it.

Whether friend or foe or somewhere in between, she didn't know if she could communicate with it the way she could with the animals of her homeland. Even the birds of San Francisco weren't entirely keen on her special sort of language, and it was likely this scaly creature wasn't either. So she tried something she might not have in the past. "You shouldn't eat those..." she said when she remembered she had a voice like humans do. It was not one she used in this form often, but her voice was quiet and clear, the same quality of a bird's whistle cutting through a silent woodland. Peeking out from behind the trunk of a nearby tree, she spoke up again. "The red ones are poisonous."

As the sun’s rays washed over the treetops, Nessie only had more and more to come to fear. The monster of the deep wasn’t afraid of the dark, per say, but she was afraid of what travelled within it. The dark cover of night only gave the creatures she feared more places to hide, and more opportunities to ambush her. But it would be just fine, wouldn’t it? Soon enough she would be off, going back to San Francisco, and finding her way back to her warm cozy bed. She just had to wait for the arch to reappear, for it to whisk her back away to civilization. Surely that wasn’t too much to ask, was it? In any time at all things would fall back into place. Besides, she didn’t have to worry. Nessie knew she was in one of the safe zones, one of the places that the resistance claimed was free from the darkness. But could it really be? Were patrols enough?

Nessie was just hyping herself up, she had to realize that. She would be okay, and she would survive all of this. She stepped closer to the berry bush. There were a few handfuls missing- so someone had been eating them. Or something, possibly. There were plenty of little creatures out and about, scurrying across the ground to make it home to their dens. These were the moments that made Nessie miss her real home, the place where she belonged. It wasn’t truly there anymore, although the loch had to be, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to find it. Nessie wasn’t that great of a tracker, she was just a great swimmer. That was all she needed to make her happy, really.

The lochness monster pulled at one of the berries on the bush, looking at it carefully. The twilight made them the most beautiful color she could have ever imagined- certainly something that was desired to be eaten, right? Although she wasn’t quite sure if it could be eaten. What if she was allergic? There were a lot of things Nessie had come to learn about since ending up in San Francisco. She had been taught about health and caring for yourself in ways that didn’t even seem possible- especially not when she looked like this. Standing at a good nine feet tall, Nessie doubted much food could impact her in any sort of negative way! But really, she didn’t know. She was just trying to survive each and every day.

She couldn’t focus on anything, of course, not with the sounds of cracking behind her. What was going to attack her? Was this her final moment, right here in front of the berry bush? What about her job? Her friends? Would they know she missed them dearly? And… Then there was the voice. Poison? The berry fell from Nessie’s claw, ”Oh.” how else was she meant to react? What could she say, what could she do? Slowly, Nessie turned to face the voice. A woman? How had she gotten out here? ”Thank you.” Nessie spoke- if the woman was helping Nessie, surely she couldn’t be dangerous, right? Everything would be just fine. ”Where did you come from?”
