She had been lucky when she got the call back, her phone ringing waking her up from the dead of sleep, the manager asking if she could start that evening. Of course, the answer had been a resounding and groggy ’YES! OF COURSE! I’LL BE THERE’, since she couldn’t exactly say not to a job. But it hadn’t quite sank in until ten minutes before her shift started. She had been jobless for two weeks, thankful she had enough saved up to pay for rent and bills and a few packs of ramen, and the routine of writing on her blog and trying to distract herself with hikes in the park had made the sudden and new change seem like a dream. Like it hadn’t happened and she was just thinking it had because wouldn’t it be nice to have a pay check again and buy a meal that wasn’t dried noodles and salty fake shrimp powder flavoring. But when she went to grab her phone, she saw the recent calls… the reminder text staring her in her face to bring ID and a voided check to set up direct deposit… it all came rushing back. She was going to be late.

Immediately she sprung to action, but was hardly fast enough to dress in what she recalled was uniform—black jeans and a black collared top—and make it to the restaurant in time to fill out her paper work and meet her trainer who would be helping her for the next week. Maybe if she had five more minutes she would have been able to make it minimally late and without injury, but ten minutes was hardly time for the clumsy girl to throw herself in to some semblance or order and make it the (albeit short) distance to work. If she hadn’t gotten lost in her blog, writing about the haunting dragon boy who was ever more persistent in her dreams and what possibly it could mean, she might have looked toward her phone for entertainment a lot sooner. But if it wasn’t for bad luck, Chihiro was sure she’d have none at all.

What a way to make a good first impression, having nearly begged the hiring manager upon her interview to hire her because she would be a good asset. She had promised punctuality, and for the most part she was very rarely ever late. But now, it would look like all the things she promised and pleaded about would be a lie. And Kami that was the furthest thing from what she was. Clumsy and a bit loud? Yes. Undoubtedly. But she was responsible and a hard worker—even if her work was just on par and nothing really spectacular. She prided herself on being dependable, responsible… someone others could rely on. And she was sure that was what had gotten them to hire her as her track record with other places was hardly stellar. Now here she was… late. What a wonderful first impression.

She had left the apartment with only one casualty, her ankle, twisting awkwardly as she tried to show it in the slip-resistant shoe and only ending up having it roll and send shooting pain up her leg. But she didn’t have time to spare in coddling it… and gave only a few seconds where her eyes teared up and she bounced around her room on one foot—trying her best to both ease the pain and get her shoe on with little more trouble. And then she was off running, a frantic look on her face as she shoved past people with shouted apologies and waves, and hidden winces as the slightly swollen ankle was ignored during her sprint. She couldn’t afford to lose this job before she even started—she needed it if she didn’t want to get evicted next month—a constant threat of her landlord who was tired of her begging for extensions. It wasn’t like where she lived was anything special either… studio apartment with a murphy bed and a hot plate. Not that she could afford to eat amazing gourmet food, let alone cook it, the equipment to do so would have been nice. Not that she could complain—the hot plate did nicely at boiling water for her ramen and the occasional egg she tried to work with for some form of protein.

“I’M HERE! I’M HERE! PLEASE DON’T FIRE ME! I’M HERE” Throwing open the doors, her eyes looking to the clock on the wall that mocked her in neon numbers, she breathed a heavy sigh. Thirteen and a half minutes wasn’t terrible was it? Especially considering she had run there in record time, deciding against the time it would have taken for her to carry her bike down the three flights of stairs as it would have severely handicapped her more and likely lead to more injury. Surely the boss wasn’t even ready for her to do her paperwork… and this had given him a chance to gather it all up. She tried to steady her breathing; panting and gasping for air, before she feigned a sense of calm that surely her appearance betrayed. Cheeks red and her forehead covered in a sheen of sweat… dark eyes frantic and worried and her hands fiddled with her wild hair to calm it down. There was no fooling anyone but herself—at that she was quite the pro. “Helloooo? Anyone here?” she called to the empty hostess stand, taking the quiet moments to collect herself, rolling from the ball of her foot to her heel. Finishing putting her hair in to a messy ponytail, pulled back by a worn and loose pink hairband, she sighed. Way to go Chihiro. Way to start off the day.

heart to heart
Things were always changing at the restaurant. One day they had plenty of people the work, while the next half the staff had called out sick. It was a good thing Yuu didn’t have much else to do with her time, otherwise they would have been short-staffed more often than not. Not needing to sleep meant that she could spend more time doing whatever else she wanted to do! Great, really. Especially when she could make a few extra bucks- that was always useful for whatever fun things she was interested in. She could buy new toys, new games, whatever she wanted! Or even go out for a few drinks- that was always a welcome break from whatever was going on around her. Plus she could dance for hours and fours, enjoying herself and meeting all sorts of new and exciting people.

Though dancing and partying weren’t the only ways she knew she could make friends. There were events to go to, places to go to, and all sorts of things like that. Sometimes even work was a way to bring people together. That was how she befriended Roman, that was how she met Dora, and so many others! It seemed as if, wherever you went, there was a chance to get to know countless others! That was something Yuu never had the chance to experience as a soot sprite, not often. They were always working, always trying to make sure the bathhouse stayed warm and on schedule. If they didn’t, they simply turned back into soot! It was a hard life to lead, and it was almost as challenging as this world was to survive in. At least it was easier to find things to do here, for the most part. Easier to give herself a job to do, to stop herself from turning back into a pile of dust. Where was the fun in that?

She hadn’t even found her friends and family from home yet, so how could she give up?

Arriving at work a little early, Yuu was informed she’d be in charge of training a new young employee. The woman had been called in that morning, as they needed someone to start right away. It was always a struggle with someone dropped something and had to take a week off for whatever injury they had… Something Yuu had never done before, of course. So it was completely foreign to her. Even if she did get hurt, she always seemed to heal up pretty quickly? Maybe it was because she was a sprite, or maybe it was a normal human thing? A lot of the time she still couldn’t figure out the difference between the two of them.

The only problem with all of this was, of course, that the girl was late.

”She’ll be here soon! I bet she just had some bus problems.” Yuu waved her boss aside as she folded silverware together. No reason to worry at all! She kept an eye on the door as she waited, knowing any moment the girl would pop right through it! Yuu just felt it. Besides, they had plenty of crazy employees here, and they weren’t exactly busy today. It was too early for any sort of rush, and not the right day for it.

Yuu laughed as the girl came in, ”C’mere! Don’t make a fool of yourself just yet!” she gestured and stood up from her spot, setting down her silverware, and popping her head around the corner, ”I’m Yuu! Nice to meet you, and welcome to the team! I’ll be training you today.” she smiled again, ”Wanna take a second and clean up in the bathroom? You’ll wanna look good for the boss.” she nodded. Might as well help her out, right?

She would like to say that this was the only time something like this had happened. She would like to swear up and down and left and right that this was a once in a lifetime happenstance and beg the manager to not look down on her for the little accident—after all everything still seemed to be in order. But her record spoke for itself. It wasn’t that she advertised her lateness, in fact she never truly aimed to be late and things just always happened as per her usual luck, but the long job history on her resume spoke words she didn’t have to. There had to be a reason she had been fired from so many jobs… any employer would look at the list and grimace. And now… she was just proving everyone right. She was unreliable, a risk, and Kami did she wish she wasn’t. But there wasn’t a lot she could change.

Waking up early and setting alarms for an hour before her shift never did anything. Most says when she showed up late she was right on track to getting there on time. Then all of a sudden she would fall down the stairs and need to bandage up her knee or her hands. She was an accident in human form, waiting for the most inopportune time to strike and leave herself stranded. Of course that was just about her semi-regular tardiness. That completely discounted the fact that she was likely the most uncoordinated person on the team, a giant baby who could hardly walk could do better than her! But right now, her clumsiness wasn’t what was being judged. She had promised the manager she’d be there and he trusted her. Now she was making a right fool of herself coming in late… First impressions were everything and while she might have said all the right things during the interview, she was no longer a prospective employee. Now she was one. Now was when she had to step up to the plate and instead she fumbled. She dropped the ball.

The woman who popped her head around the corner took her completely off guard, a loud squeal of surprise leaving her lips as she jumped back a half foot, hand poised on her chest. For a long moment she stared at the woman with wide eyes, wondering if it was safe to move, before she relaxed, willing her heart to calm down. Laughing nervously Chihiro nodded her head, taking a breath and nervously tucking her wild hair behind her ear. A part of her realized maybe she should have thrown it in a ponytail before running out, but the thought hadn’t crossed her mind despite knowing this was a waitressing position.

“Yet? Chihiro looked confused as she looked around. “You mean I already haven’t?” she questioned, her tone genuine and sincere. She was almost 15 minutes late… most places wouldn’t accept that from a brand new employee! At this point she expected the boss to come out red in the face with a pointed finger and tell her she was fired before she could even fill out the paperwork. She blinked a few times at the woman, waiting to hear the response. She gave a nervous laugh and nodded at the introduction. “Nice to meet you Yuu! I’m Chihiro,” she said with a bright friendly smile. Another awkward run through of her hair had her grimacing as she caught a tangle, and reminded her just as her trainer did, that it would be best to at least straighten up before getting started. Dark eyes widened and a flush colored her cheeks. “Uh YEAH! I’ll be right back!” she exclaimed, eyes on her feet as she turned on her heel to head toward the guest bathroom.

Staring at her messy reflection, Chihiro frowned. Would they see through her weak attempts to look nice and know she hadn’t been there? Would the look back at all her other work indiscretions and realize they had made a mistake? Despite all the accidents she was a hard worker—she was a stickler for the rules and hated that most of the time she was causing trouble. But she couldn’t exactly help it. It was just a shame that no matter how hard she tried she would always be a victim of her own clumsiness… and no one would see past that. Shrugging at her reflection she splashed water on her face, cooling down her bright cheeks and wiping off the sweat with a paper towel. Running her fingers through her hair she pulled it back into some semblance of a ponytail, using her favorite pink hairband with the pearls to pull it back. Every time she wore that hairband things seemed to have a way of working out despite the trouble. It was worn and old, too old if she thought about it, but it left a warm feeling in her. Nodding to her reflection to moved back out to meet with Yuu.

“Sorry about that, but thanks. Wouldn’t want to make another bad impression.” she said sweetly, a playful emphasis of ‘another’ in her voice. She giggled a bit to herself and took the seat across from Yuu, reaching a hand forward and dipping it in to the silverware tray, taking a moment to watch her movements in how the restaurant folded their silverware before following suit. “So where do we start!” she chirped brightly.

heart to heart
When Yuu was still new to this world, there were a million things she didn’t understand. In her own world she worked when the bathhouse came to be- the rest of the time she slept. Sleeping was important, after all. At least, it was there. Here she didn’t worry about that sort of stuff, as her sleep in the bathhouse, she believed, was just her stopping until she had to work again. Almost like she didn’t exist unless Kamaji told them to for some reason. It seemed a bit odd… But she was sure that was how things had worked. Sometimes the craziest ideas were the correct ones. That as, after all, how she figured out that she would die if she wasn’t working towards something. Sorta insane, but that was just her life now. At least she got to be a human and try out so many new things! She could have more jobs, and experience new people, and more things! Oh it was great. So in the end, she was happy with it.

What other choice did she have?

Being a waitress was enjoyable. Yuu was having a great time meeting all sorts of people and making new friends. She didn’t mind having to work a lot or anything like that, not when it was all so different. Yes, it was still work, but it was nothing like her own world, nothing like it at all. She could dance and sing and do more than just lifting heavy coal into a blazing fire. That had to count for something, right? It was a whole new world to see and explore, and new sorts of people were great. There were people that always worried, people that fell in love far too easily… It was amazing. What kind of person did she come across as? Yuu had to wonder about herself, of course she did. All she focused on were things that were new. She wanted to learn about this world and really be a part of it, eventually. After all, she was only a small sprite. How could she make it home by herself? Even the wind was enough to throw her off track!

Yuu absolutely adored new staff. She loved meeting them, getting to know them, and more! It was a great way to make friends and learn more about the people in this world. Sometimes Yuu wondered if the people she met were from world's like her. People like her, who weren’t meant to be here. Surely she wasn’t the only one? After all, Haven Hill existed for a reason! ”Not yet.” she grinned, ”Mostly because no one has checked.” Yuu winked. Hey, it was better than nothing, right? ”Besides, people are always late on the first day. Bus problems, car issues, getting lost, all that fun stuff.” she nodded and stopped as the girl spoke her name. Chihiro? ”Oh, wow, I… I had a friend with that same name once. Crazy.” Yuu smiled. Was it her? Could it possibly be? It sounded insane to have the girl who changed the sprite’s world be right in front of her.

The girl was off in a moment, getting cleaned back up. She looked good for her first day, really! And she looked like she had been in a rush, so Yuu couldn’t blame her for being a little messy. Even if it wasn’t the real Chihiro… Yuu just felt like she had to take care of her. She had to help her out and keep things going well. Especially if it was her Chihiro… ”No problem. Don’t worry at all! We all need a little time.” Yuu smiled, ”And you looked fine beforehand, just a bit winded.” she nodded, ”Easy things first, I suppose. Wanna help me finish up folding silverware? Gotta get it done before the rush, right?”

It was a rare occasion when she didn’t feel nervous to start a new job, and despite how jittery she felt when she arrived, this girl who was supposed to be training her had easy stifled that. Maybe it was her smile or the way she was just in an overall good mood, but Chihiro wasn’t too worked up after she sat down to help with the silverware. Normally first days were terrible for her, her body shaking with nerves as she tried to make a good first impression. It was hard when you knew deep down that you were only hired because they were in a tight spot and not because you they actually wanted you. She could promise she’d be great as much as she wanted, until she was blue in the face, but that didn’t change how much her past loomed over her. Each and every job she ever had, while she had a good report with all of them and it wasn’t behavioral issues that had her getting fired, it didn’t change that she had been let go… it reflected poorly on her despite how hard she tried. Her reputation preceded her and she needed to make a good impression. But the fear… at least for the time being… was only lingering in the back of her mind.

Pulling the silverware from the tub—forks on top of knives, wrapped and rolled tight—she followed Yuu’s actions. Of course, she knew how to roll silverware. It was one of the first things you were taught when you started working diner jobs. But it was also something that was done differently in each place, and while small, it was also something you wanted to do right. In the future it would always be the little things you did right that would have your back… the little things that you could rely on when the tray slips and glasses crash to the floor. The little things would be what brought you through the times when customers scream at you for something wrong that was out of your control. It was the little things she could get right.

“I had planned on being early when I got off the phone… at six in the morning…” Chihiro laughed as she started a growing pyramid of rolled silverware bundles. She gave a quick shrug and sighed. “And then I fell asleep and thought it was a dream. Didn’t think it was real… so I had to rush.” she explained, setting her bundle down and fixing Yuu with a smile. “Its just like me though… total klutz!” she explained, before her eyes grew wide and she lifted a hand to cover her mouth. “I shouldn’t have told you that… oh Kami. I swear… I’m… I mean kind of… I try?” she looked a bit helpless as she pouted at Yuu, a small smile on her lips as she shrugged. She realized she shouldn’t have outright said how much trouble she could be. She bit her bottom lip and hung her head low.

“What a coincidence. Were the two of you close?” Chihiro asked, glad to switch the spotlight from her faux pas and back on to her trainer who seemed to have brought up a distracting subject. It was always nice to get to know the people you worked with. A lot of times though she was stopped before she could start, her fellow servers too preoccupied with their cellphones or making out in the walk in freezer. The only thing she ever got from them was a phone number so she could be reached when they wanted to call off and have her cover so they could do whatever girls like that did. So she was glad to hear part of her life, whatever small bit it was.

“Easy things… I like easy things.” Chihiro smiled, waving a wrapped piece of silverware. “I am a pro at wrapping silverware. I can get these puppies done in minutes.” she explained with a bit of a devious grin. It took everything she could to not add something to the effect of ‘its all I can do’. Setting the bundle down she resituated on the seat. “How is it working here? Like… how are the people?”[/b] she questioned, her hands clasping in front of her. It was good to know what it was like, how people were and what the work was like. It wasn’t like she would run away if she heard bad news, but it was nice to know what trouble she was getting her nose in to, what to expect.

heart to heart
Yuu wanted her new, and apparently excited, coworker to feel comfortable as quickly as possible in this place. Not just because she didn’t want her to quit and the rest of the staff all to have to work a million extra hours, but because she genuinely wanted her to feel good. Especially with a name like Chihiro. Okay, yeah yeah, maybe Yuu was a little bit biased. But in general she loved getting to know all her coworkers, making them comfortable and like they fit right in with the rest of the group. She enjoyed making any place she spent time at feel more like a family gathering than actual work- especially because that was what things had always been like for her. Things had always been full of time to spend with all of the other sprites, all of her brothers and sisters. And she was always around Kamaji, and he was certainly a father figure to her. After all, he gave them life, and jobs, and so much more than he would ever know. He gave them a reason to be. And maybe now the fact that she always had to have a reason to live was hard, but she could deal with it. Yuu could always come up with some other reason for her to do this or that or this other thing, and make it a real goal. Make it a real and true reason to live.

Could this girl have truly been her Chihiro? Sure, they hadn’t know each other very well, but Yuu had watched Chihiro from the moment she arrived at the bathhouse until they were all forced to leave. And the soots had loved her! She was so kind, so welcoming, and just the type of person they loved to deal with. Someone new to the world of spirits… It definitely had to be a lot to take in! There were so many different types of people, with so many different numbers of limbs, and so many other little details like that that were all just slightly off from humans. Not that she was one herself, Yuu could see it far more clearly. It was so much more obvious to her, all of the little things between all the different kinds of people. She loved it! Being a human was definitely a nice change, for a little while, but in the end Yuu would always want to be a sprite. Maybe a talking sprite, but a sprite nonetheless.

Relaxing back in her chair, Yuu continually looked up at Chihiro, just to see if anything was similar. Brown hair, that was the most obvious one. But she had no idea if she was really her or not- how could she? They weren’t in the right world anymore, so everything was a little bit off. Obviously Yuu would just have to add something into the conversation that would refer to the bathhouse, somehow, without being too obvious. She didn’t want to be wrong. She didn’t want to cause any trouble. Yuu understood that other people weren’t allowed to know about the other world! So she’d just… Be careful. Just like she always was. Yuu wrapped up a few things of silverware and set them off to the side, starting what would hopefully be an impressive pile. ”You’re a quick learner.” Yuu commented, ”Have you done this before?” who knew what sorts of odd jobs the girl had been forced to take- Yuu had been in quite a number of roles herself, over time. Always fun little odd ones, just to learn more about people. ” It happens!” she laughed, ”At least you made it, right? Not super late, I’d say.” Yuu smiled, ”Don’t worry about it though, plenty of people end up late sometimes. Lots of late night partiers and that sort of people, so really, it’s okay.” total klutz? Could have been her Chihiro. She didn’t know.

”Your secret is safe with me, don’t you worry!” Yuu winked. She paused and shrugged, ”Ehhh. I liked her, but we never spoke much. Not really. I think she liked me too.” hopefully, ”It was a little confusing.” but, in the end, it was perfect. Yuu looked over at the girl again, hoping for some glint of a memory, ”Well that’s good! Silverware wrapping is a pretty big part of working here. And washing dishes.” she laughed, ”You’ll fit right in!” Yuu smiled at the girl, ”It’s good. Everyone is nice, I promise. Sometimes flirty, but eh, isn’t every kitchen like that?”

After so many times starting a new job, she’d think that one more orientation wouldn’t be so nerve wracking. It would no doubt be like all the others—she’d sit down and get a lecture by the night manager about what service was like and what to expect (and of course it would always be a vast understatement about what it was really like), she would ask her questions, then paper work and then finally she’d be thrown in the thick of it. Sink or swim! That was most manager’s process of weeding out the weak. Either she would pick it up with the help of her trainer, or she’d flop and be the gimpy leg until she was finally fired a week later. And while she had gotten the handle of restaurants like this after so many incidents “sinking” when thrown in the deep end, it didn’t change how nervous she felt. Yuu was nice, and Chihiro doubted the girl would let her fail that night or any of her shifts in the week it would take to train, but she still felt her stomach in knots.

Thankful to have something to busy her hands with, the girl kept busy with rolling the tray of silverware. Napkin first, knife down, fork on top, fold the bottom and then the side and ROLLLLLLL! Every place did it slightly different and each place had different material for their napkins. But in the end, it was just the same motions over and over. And in this instance she was thankful to busy herself, thankful to be doing something so she didn’t have to think about the lecture she was going to get from the manager for her orientation. Eventually the basket would run out, and she would go back to wringing her shirt nervously until she could sit down and talk with him, but the tray was filled and there was good conversation to keep her mind occupied. That wasn’t to say she wouldn’t be thankful when the night as done and the tables were clean and she could breathe a breath of relief knowing she survived. But for now it wasn’t bad.

“I probably shouldn’t say but I’ve had my fair share of waitressing jobs.” Chihiro explained with a shrug. Her actions halted as she placed the finished roll of silverware in the pile, eyes moving to the girl who thankfully promised to keep her secret. She sighed, the action turning to a breathy giggle as she placed a hand on her heart to calm it from beating out of her chest. It wasn’t a good idea to tell your new coworkers how much a failure you were… it would only make them despite the time she worked with them, hours spent with them waiting for her to fuck up so they would have to come it and clean her mess up. But Yuu didn’t seem to mind, if anything taking it in stride with a good sense of humor. A smile curled to Chihiro’s lips and she nodded. “I don’t know if it makes you feel any better but I promise I’m a hard worker! And I’m really good with people… I’ve never been fired for those reasons. Just… bad on my feet is all.” she explained, looking down at the pile in front of her, hands moving to busy themselves again and return to rolling. “I only really hurt myself honestly… so you don’t have to worry. I’ll work really hard.” she reassured, more for her self rather than to Yuu who would be shepherding her around that evening.

“If it makes you feel any better, one Chihiro already thinks you’re pretty cool. So I’m sure my namesake does too. I wouldn’t worry.” Chihiro giggled sweetly. How could anyone not like her would be the real question! So she honestly doubted this other Chihiro had anything more than fond memories of her friend. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, continuing the monotonous busy work, her eyes focused on the girl. “What happened with you two?” she questioned innocently, her eyes widening a few awkwardly long seconds after she realized how nonchalant she had been. She didn’t know if it was something personal or if she could even ask something like that so soon with someone she was just meeting. A hand lifted to cover her mouth and she cursed under her breath. “I-IF YOU DON’T MIND ME ASKING THAT IS!” she finished, her voice raising an octave but slightly muffled by the hand over her mouth. Taking a deep breath in through her nose, the girl not seeming perturbed by the question (at least from what she noticed), Chihiro sighed. Intent and focused on rolling the silverware, she was comfortable letting Yuu steer the conversation again, hesitant to make any more social faux pas. Nodding her head with a hum of acknowledgment as she explained how everyone was nice, she breathed another breath of relief, looking up tentatively from the large pile of rolled silverware—hand reaching in to the tray but coming back empty. “Whoops! Looks like we’re done. Anymore in the back?” she questioned, knowing full well how easy it was to forget about rolling everything the night before. “I’m not to worried… I think it would be more disconcerting honestly if the chefs and other waiters weren’t flirty. It’s the business…” she hesitantly chuckled, testing the waters with uncertainty, still nervous about having made too big of a splash as it was.

heart to heart
The environment of working in a restaurant was always an exciting one. Yuu had learned, during her time here in this world, that she was far more interested in fast paced places, working where she could do more than just the bare minimum. People may not have assumed that there was much of a connection between burlesque dancing and waitressing, but there was! It was just a bit of an odd thing, honestly. Something you could only realize if you were there, in those moments. Most of the time it was more of a feeling. Eyes were always on you, although in entirely different contexts. You were doing your work for the pleasure of others… It was odd, but something the sprite had noticed. Her mind worked a bit differently than most, didn’t it? After all, it wasn’t exactly the mind of a human to begin with. It was always Yuu’s job to follow orders and do what she was told, but that didn’t mean she didn’t observe as well.

What else was she to do when she wasn’t running the bath house?

This job was nice though. Especially as there wasn’t a chance to fall into a giant flaming stove at all hours of the day. That had to be incredibly dangerous, right? At least, it would have been in this world. The sprite didn’t have to worry about it when she was just a small ball of soot! Life was far easier when there wasn’t that to worry about. Here she just had to deal with a ton of people. Not too bad, not most of the time. And she had other jobs too, like cleaning and rolling silverware. That was probably the easiest job of them all! One that Yuu personally liked to give to the new people. There was no reason for them to be so stressed- especially the girl here now. The girl with the familiar name. Even if she was late, who cared? It happened from time to time. ”Really?” Yuu laughed a bit, ”Don’t even worry. Everyone moves around, for one reason or another.” her manager was a kind woman, and she probably already knew, so Chihiro really didn’t have to worry.

”I trust that you are.” Yuu looked at the girl, ”I can see it in your eyes.” eyes were the gateway to the soul, after all. They had much to say about many things. She knew Chihiro would do just well! ”Seriously, don’t worry. Things will be just fine. Just do your best!” Yuu smiled again, ”I’ll have your back too.” especially if this was somehow her Chihiro, right? She had to protect her. And even if she was wrong she still wanted to protect them. Yuu was just that kind of person. She laughed, ”I’m glad this one does!” that just made her like the girl even more, in the end.

Yuu didn’t know how to reply. What did happen? ”Well…” she smiled a little bit, ”It’s a long story, and I don’t mind sharing it one day. Long story short, we moved away and lost contact, sorta. It sucks.” Yuu shrugged, ”I’m sure we’ll reconnect one day.” Yuu never cared about questions like that- they just happened at times, didn’t they? She was lost in her thoughts working for a minute before Chihiro spoke again. ”Wow! Yep, we have more to do. Not this, but other work. Wanna shine glasses with me?” boring, but something they had to do. ”Or we could wipe down the undersides of the tables. Boss likes that.” she laughed, ”Good! The flirty definitely happens every so often.”

Although everything was new right now, eventually it wouldn’t feel so weird or awkward. The faces of the few waiters and waitresses would become familiar, just like their work ethic and personalities. The girl with the ponytail and perfectly winged eyeliner would be the one to talk a lot about her boyfriend and her relationship, friendly enough but the type to sneak to the bathroom for a break to text. And the boy with the slicked back hair would be quiet, he’d be polite but it would be weeks before he opened up but he’d be the fun one, the reliable one who’d pick up shifts because bills needed to be paid. And she would become the goofy one, the one that everyone smiled and laughed at and couldn’t help but talk to… also the one everyone looked out for. They would cover her tables when she hurt herself, or step up when a customer got angry. It wasn’t an exact science, but in her experience that was how it worked out in the end. And this girl, with her bright smile and excited eyes, she would become her work best friend. They would exchange numbers and at first it would just be work related texts… until it wasn’t and they were hanging out after shifts and trying to manipulate the schedule so they worked at the same time together. That… that was more of a hope than an educated guess, but something about this girl made the notion seem more plausible than not.

Chihiro blushed at the thought about her work history being so long, spilling well over on to a second page of her resume which was apparently wrong for the working world. Hard work and good work was different… that was something her first manager taught her that unfortunately stuck with her like a plague. Just because she tried her best, put her best foot forward and did whatever she could didn’t make it good work. At the end of the day Chihiro always felt secure in knowing she did an honest day’s job, that she always did whatever she could. But just because she put her all in to a shift didn’t make the work good. Her cleaning could have been sub-par, and the way she handled accidents… and how many there were… would make her quality suffer. It was advice she had been given when she was first fired, her first job after being told by her psychologist that it would be a good idea to start working part time… There was a fine line between hard work and good work… and since she had always did her best to strive for both.

“Phew… I can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear that.” she sighed, wiping her forehead almost comically at her relief. She flashed a wide smile, gently taking the pyramid of folded silverware and stacking them all in the basket that would no doubt be shoved under the hostess stand. “A lot of people adhere to that sink or swim notion…” she gave a grimace and a shrug as she looked to the woman, “I normally sink.” she continued, admitting with another blush. Chihiro laughed nervously, her eyes looking back down to the table cloth, teeth biting in to her lip. “But I feel better knowing you have my back!” she chirped after a moment, looking up suddenly with a smile so as to not darken the mood. “So thanks!”

Standing up abruptly, hiding the grimace of pain as she knocked her knee in to the table she sucked in a deep breath through her nose, summoning a weak smile. “Shining glasses sounds better than chipping away wads of gum from under tables…” she laughed, knowing full well that no matter high end the place was, there would always be the rogue child who would hide their gum under the table without a second thought. And while she knew eventually she’d be getting the scraper out from the tool box in the kitchen under the sink, she didn’t want the first time her new boss saw her with a three-week-old glob of gum on her forehead.

“And hey… if it means anything… I think you two will reconnect too.” Chihiro’s voice was soft and genuine, her smile warm as she nodded to confirm her statement. “Once you’ve met someone… you never really forget them. Even if you can’t remember. I’m sure she’ll find her way back.” Chihiro added sweetly. She couldn’t remember who told her that or figure out why it made her mind tingle all the way down to her fingers… but she never was one to question it. One day it would come back to her… and she could smile on the memory with fondness. Looking around the place, the pearls in her hair band glinting in the fading light of the afternoon shining in through the windows, her brow furrowed. “Which way to the kitchen Senpai?” she asked with an almost teasing smile about her, hoping she hadn’t overstepped her bounds with her new friend.

heart to heart
Really, this place was like another home to Yuu. In a way, it reminded her of the bathhouse, with the way all of the servers and cashiers and cooks were always on the move. It really was just like how everyone was in and out, how she and the other soot sprites were always running around in order to keep the boilers going. Everyone was busy, and everyone had a role to play. It was nice, really, to have such a purpose. To always have a goal in mind. It was honestly mind blowing, when she thought about it. Yuu was just drawn towards places that reminded her of home. In the end it made sense, she supposed. Everyone wanted something familiar, something nice and relaxing to be around. No matter how fast paced things would get, it was nothing compared to literally dropping coal into a fire! Yuu really had done it all- although this world was just a bit more dangerous in the ways things happened. She would always love spending time with her coworkers, spending time with them in the daytime and sneaking away at night to do her other job. Yuu wasn’t very open here about being a dancer- she didn’t need to deal with the judgement. She had faced it already in other environments, and certainly didn’t want to see it ever again. So to them she was just a waitress, a girl having a great time and thinking about going back to school, or something like that.

Sure, she didn’t like lying, but sometimes it was the only way to survive. The only way to get by. A bit over dramatic to say, maybe, but true nonetheless. However things would be different now, she expected. With someone so much like Chihiro… She wouldn’t let this girl out of her sight, waiting for something, anything to tip her off that this could be her Chihiro. Yuu was practically desperate to find anyone from home, no matter who or what they were. It would just take time to get to being that open. Maybe this Chihiro would be someone she could talk with. A new friend, a new companion. Yuu was always looking for more close friends, and from what she could tell, this girl certainly had the personality for it. And then she wouldn’t have to have to lie to someone, not anymore. Yuu could spill out her truths, from the dancing to her old world. Just being able to tell anyone about it… That was all she desired, honestly. And Chihiro- the kind girl that made her so curious about the outside world, about what went on outside of the bathhouse.

Yuu was certainly curious to see how things would change around the restaurant now. Every time they hired someone new the culture shifted and grew in some new and mystical way. So what would it be this time? Hopefully a good shift, if Chihiro’s personality spoke of anything. The sprite grinned at the girl in front of her, ”Hey, even if you sink, you made it here, right?” she picked up a fork from the ground, ”You still have a chance to swim here.” maybe it was a bit cheesy to say, but Yuu believed in it. If this was her Chihiro… She was going to protect her for as long as she possibly could, ”I’ll definitely have your back. I know the feeling of sinking, but this place has treated me well so far.” and so it would treat Chihiro well too, she believed. Yuu couldn’t help but laugh as Chihiro talked about gum- the bane of every server’s existence, ”Don’t worry, we don’t get gummy tables too often. But you better shine those glasses well! Not a speck of dust can remain. And don’t be afraid to send some back if you think they should be rewashed. The dishwashers are chill.” and if they were rude, well, they’d have to deal with Yuu.

The green haired girl took a deep breath. There was still a chance this was her Chihiro, right? There was still a chance she forgot, somehow. Yuu just couldn’t give up on this being her Chihiro. And even if it wasn’t, well, she’d still value the friendship. ”Thanks, Chi.” she smiled, giving her new coworker a nickname already, ”I hope she does too. She was great.” glancing at the clock to check the time, Yuu grinned at the nickname of the girl. It was nice, honestly, to be around someone else who knew Japanese- even if it was just a few words. ”This way. There are two doors, so don’t go through the wrong set to the bathrooms, kohai!” she moved towards the back, ”We don’t do that whole ‘one door for in and one door for out’ thing, but it’s good to make sure before you go through anyways.” Yuu dramatically pointed to the doors, ”Now this is your way to where the magic is made.”

It did her no good to feel the continued nerves wracking at her gut, to let it get to her, if even in a silent manner. Yes, it was natural to be nervous on your first, especially for someone like herself who was rather sensitive and despite having a hard work ethic, hardly good at what she did. But it was something else entirely to continue to let herself get so nervous that she would inevitably self-sabotage. Yu had made it abundantly clear that this place was a good one, reassuring Chihiro that maybe she had found the figurative goldmine for waitressing jobs, but the butterflies in her stomach couldn’t be quelled. How many times had her trainers told her that before? Don’t worry and I’m right here and I’ve got your back. How many times had she thought to herself that this job might be a long standing one… and then days later not be quite cut from the same cloth as the other workers? The Japanese girl wanted it to work, in fact, her growing bills practically demanded it, but all the same there was a sinking nervousness that she refused to give up on, too afraid to let herself down again.

She could tell herself a million times that she could do this! She had already when fervently getting ready after she recalled almost too late that she had gotten the job. But saying it to herself in sparing few seconds, nodding to her reflection with a smile of hope and naïve optimism, and actually being able to do it were different. This was a waitressing job like any other one, and she could thankfully rely on years’ worth of experience, as much of a failure as it was, but the managing style would be different. She could smile and take orders and be as much of a people person as she wanted, but her worth in the company would be determined by how she drove sales and how much she cost them in broken glasses, spilled plates of hot food, and obviously… repeat business she could gather. She could be sweet as cherry pie, and certainly she tried her best, but that wouldn’t promise that tomorrow, or the next day, or the next week, that she would still have a job to depend on. So badly did she want to let the anxieties go… throw them to the wind and jump head first in to this new experience. But she knew better, and clung subconsciously to the fear that something would happen.

Hidden behind a practiced smile, genuine and sweet, she was thankful that her trainer was someone so knowledgeable, but also sympathetic. Chihiro could only say out loud so many times how nervous she was before she became that annoying girl everyone hated talking to because she couldn’t get her wits about her. She wanted to come off as confident, even if her movements betrayed otherwise, and there was slight hesitation in her voice. She wanted to come off as the right person for this job, and take to it like a fish to water. She wanted to impress the boss, impress the staff, and impress Yuu to make a point that she was the right choice. But her self-doubt, awkward and telling in her eyes, chained her back. She would flourish, like many, but in time. And until then she at least had her strong work ethic to guide her. It might take a couple tries, but her passion and desire to do things drove her to success.

“Just don’t throw me to the sharks.” she chirped, a blush on her cheeks as she nodded in agreement. If there was ever a time to fall and fail, tonight was it. There wasn’t much expected of her, so it left room to make a good impression. But it also left room for mistakes to be made. It wasn’t a good thought to rely on, but soothing to know that if something were to happen she had more to fall back on than a simple “oops… sorry”. There was confidence in Yuu’s words, easing the nerves that lingered, and she smiled. “Got it… spotty glasses are a no no.” Chihiro reaffirmed, nodding her head and writing in the air as if in an invisible journal. “That’s really good though, I know a lot of dishwashers get angry when things need to be run through again… most won’t even do it or would just spray it down.” she offered idly, following the woman she deemed her Senpai.

Her smile only beamed brighter when the woman reciprocated in the honorific, and while many would feel almost offended—she didn’t. She understood her place was on the bottom of the figurative hostess totem pole. She was just lucky she had someone to learn from, someone especially who seemed to understand and someone she got along with. She couldn’t shake it, she knew she had never met this woman before, but there was something oddly familiar. Though some people just had those personalities, she supposed. “Oh definitely… wouldn’t want to smack someone with a tray full of hot food…” she answered, glad to be behind the woman so as to hide her blush form her. It had only happened a few times before in her career, throwing open swinging doors and hitting another server… but it happened enough to be a cause for embarrassment… enough for her to bite her bottom lip and look away almost shamefully, tagging along for the continued tour and following her in to the kitchens. Dark eyes took in the set up, pretty standard for most kitchens all things considered, and she looked to the girl. “So how does this work then? Where do we fit?” she asked, wanting to make sure she understood their process of doing things and putting in orders and delivering before stepping a foot out on the busy floor.

heart to heart
So her mind was made up. This girl, this Chihiro, whether she was hers or not, was going to be Yuu’s new best friend. She was going to be the person Yuu would keep an eye on at work, and help get out of any trouble. It wouldn’t be too hard to get the boss to schedule them together, as long as Chihiro wasn’t interested in the later evening shifts, and the rest would be a piece of cake. The brunette seemed nervous about the whole situation, the whole new experience, even with Yuu’s calming words at her back. This place wasn’t high stress- in fact, it was one of the nicer laidback places Yuu had ever gotten to work at. Not that she had worked at a lot- she just shopped around before taking a position at any of the restaurants that needed someone. It seemed like they were always looking for fresh blood, as being a waitress wasn’t easy even if the place was great. And yeah, it didn’t pay the best, but it was fun. It was a way to get to meet others and make a bit of money, as well as pass the time. The most important thing for Yuu, really.

Well, other than surviving. There was always the fact that, if she wasn’t careful, she would turn to soot. Poof. Gone in a moment all because she didn’t have a goal, all because she hadn’t made some sort of purpose to keep going. Even the smallest of thing could be a purpose, but as far as she knew saying ‘Keep going so I don’t turn back to soot’ didn’t seem to be a working one. There had to be more than just surviving, more than just living. And, when she thought about it, there were so many other things. So many reasons to live and survive and love and just keep going. As long as she kept one in her mind, things would be great. Maybe taking care of her new friend could be one of those? So far it was going to be perfectly fine, as far as she knew. They’d just have to work well together, and so far Yuu was almost certain it was meant to be. Almost like there was something bigger bringing them together- almost. It wasn’t like this was her Chihiro, because hers would never forget. The memories of the bathhouse would be strong, wouldn’t they? Haku, Kamaji, everyone else… She had no idea what to expect, not in the end.

The boss would be in soon, and Yuu had to make sure Chihiro was ready. Not that he was awful or anything, of course, but she wanted the young woman to not be so nervous. This was a good place, a fun place, and they just had to agree on that. Of course it was hard to stop worrying, Yuu knew that much, but she would have to help her friend if she could. Yuu couldn’t help by smile at the young woman. It was going to be an adventure, she knew that much, and it would be a good one. Full of carrying too many plates and filling countless cups of water and bringing extra silverware whenever a piece was dropped. She would be the right person for this place at this time- it would be great. They just had to be positive. ”Throw you to them?” Yuu laughed, ”Nah, I’d just dangle you over them slowly, like a nice snack.” she winked. Never would she do something like that, not in this sort of a position. They had to figure it all out piece by piece, otherwise there would be trouble and way more mistakes. The more time they took to teach, the better.

Yuu nodded, ”Spotty anything, really.” she shook her head as Chihiro shared her story, ”Yeah, our dishwashers are great. Especially because the final step is actually putting them into a dishwasher! We don’t get spotty ones often though, so don’t worry too much.” she kept on going, ”Be more careful with the silverware. Some other places in ton get into all sorts of messes where they have food stuck on their ‘clean’ forks, and we don’t want that.” Yuu paused, ”I mean, this probably isn’t new information. I bet most places want to be careful with this?” after all, it only made sense. If the place was gross, then no one would want to be around and buy food, and that was how a place went out of business. So they’d always keep an eye out for stuff like that.

Already Yuu knew their friendship would be great. Easy and fun. Just joking around and getting to know one another and having fun at work- similar to the relationship Yuu had with her other coworkers as well. She couldn’t wait for everyone else to get to meet their newest employee, because she knew Chihiro would be greeted with open arms. A while back there were some awful and rude people, but thankfully they were gone, and the whole place was far more healthy and grand. ”Nope!” Yuu laughed, ”Not to say it hasn’t happened a few times…” she paused and looked around, ”I’ve definitely hit people with empty trays once or twice. Thankfully the windows make it easy to see if someone is on the other side.” she pointed. One less thing to stress about, right? ”A normal kitchen, I know, but I promise it’s great when we’re opened up for real.” Yuu nodded, ”We just hang out over here, by the tickets.” she pointed to the machine, ”Do you know how to use one of these? You just find and type in the order and it’ll be added to the queue. We pick our meals up here,” she pointed to the shelves, ”And then take them out. Lets see… What am I missing?”

“Dangling… now doesn’t that sound like fun,” she chirped with a knowing smile, already feeling the warm sense of comradery from her new friend. She didn’t know yet just how close the two of them would get, in every work place there were always the people you smiled at and were friendly too, always waving and talking and telling stories… but never saw outside of the same building. The people that when you saw them walking the streets in the civvies you’d duck behind a pole or in to a building just to avoid the awkward moment of ‘oh, this is what you look like when you’re not covered in food’ and are then forced to make small talk like you’re the best of friends. And then there were the people who slowly meant the world to you—the people who you jived with easily and could work in tandem without a second thought. The ones whose phone numbers you grabbed instantly and started talking like you were old friends. The ones you made plans with after work or on days off… the ones you kept in touch with after you went separate ways. Chihiro hoped Yuu would become the later, that it wouldn’t be so bold of her to ask after the evening rush if she could have her cell number, but it would depend on how the night went.

“Not new information, certainly, but what you’re told and what you actually are supposed to do vary in my experience,” she explained, with an audible roll in her eyes, almost talking under her breath between clenched teeth. Starting out people always told her the ways things were supposed to be done. Proper policy and procedure of course. But what you were supposed to do and what you actually did were most times, completely different. “So many places like to cut corners for time if you know what I mean… so it’s always like…” and she stopped, placing a finger on her chin in thought. It was a delicate balance… never wanting to cut too many corners and sacrificing quality, but as most people (especially those closing) saw it—getting out after a long shift was more important. Sighing, Chihiro shrugged, “What is the quickest way to do things rather than the right way.” she finished explaining, offering an innocent smile. “B-But that’s not h-how I see it!” she covered quickly. “I’m clumsy enough that I forget enough things on a regular that cleaning is the least I can do properly.” she explained, cheeks flushed.

Being the new girl was never easy, there was no telling how much was expected of you. Sometimes when you walked in, you were just a body filling a space that was needed. Performance didn’t matter because at least there was a set of useful hands and feet to do what was told of them. Other times, it felt like the world was expected of her, that she needed to move mountains to show that she deserved the job despite it being little more than a waitress—which admittedly was not easy in the slightest. While Yuu had already told her to calm down and that she would be fine, there was no easing her nerves. She had an impression to make, and she wanted it to be a good one. She didn’t need to let herself get too comfortable and end up literally crashing on her first night and proving the boss wrong in his decision for hiring her. She was a tornado… leaving disaster in her wake. Some nights it wasn’t so bad, hurting herself and no one else. Maybe a burn from trying to get out of the way, or a slip of a knife cutting garnish, maybe even a broken glass. But other nights… it was no holds barred. She was a force of nature and she couldn’t let herself fall in to a false sense of security too early. Even with Yuu there to back her up.

“You wouldn’t believe the trouble I’ve gotten in to,” she almost snorted when she giggled, a lifted a hand to cover her mouth. Biting on her bottom lip she looked away, continuing to follow the girl through her tour. “During a rush I grabbed a girl’s tray to try and help her out since she had a big party… but someone tried to sneak in the door when I was coming out and I tried to spin to get out of the way. Kami was that a mess…” she continued to explain, second guessing whether it was a good idea to be telling Yuu this. All the same, she couldn’t stop now. “Second degree burns from the food, a sprained ankle, and cuts from broken glass… as well as a few casualties… they had to let me go.” she finished with a shrug. That had been over a year ago now… and she had plenty of jobs in-between then and now… but she still had a few scars from the burns and the glass. She sighed, and looked to the touch-screen Yuu had gestured too. Nodding, Chihiro allowed a small smile to return to her lips. “Point-of-Sales system, yup! We’ve been introduced once before. But like most people, everyone is different. It’ll be a minute to find everything but I think we’ll get along just fine.” she quipped, lifting a finger to the tap and move through the screens quickly, getting the first look of where everything might be. Everyone was different, and so the challenge to be met, getting to know it.

Looking around he restaurant, feeling like she had seen everything, for the most part, she shrugged in answer to her Senpai’s question. “Unless you have a basement where all the dirty little secrets are kept I think so far, so good.” she teased with a grin. No doubt she would be sitting in an office soon enough, being handled booklet after booklet on rules and policy that were practically the same, but for however much longer she had with Yuu, she wanted it to be fun. Before all the mundane paper signing and the hubbub of dinner rush, she want to get to know her a bit better. “So, Senpai, what do you do when you’re not training newbies?” she questioned brightly, taking the last few moments she had and using them as best she could. They had all night to talk about work and procedure, it would be nice to know a little more about who she’d be looking up to.

Notes: She seems to be warming up a bit more now <3
