Copper hands turned over a bottle cap, it was large compared to his frame. Ethan rubbed the dirt from the surface revealing the faded name of a company long since gone. He squinted at it, his apertures narrowing then widening once more. He decided to place it down gently where he found it and moved over a pile of rubble. He scanned everywhere he went, looking for signs of life. This was one of his many regular trips across the portal looking for the others. He hadn't yet found any of them, but he still held a flicker of hope that somehow, someway, one day he'd get some closure.

Not that he really deserved it, hadn't everything happened because of him? Because he was too curious, too new and chose to seek the smaller details rather than look at the bigger picture? The longer time wore on, the more he began to think 1 was right. The world was so much bigger than him and at times, it was scary, especially now that he had frame of reference with his life beyond this one. He knew how the Creator lived and at times, wondered if they thought similar things and shared habits. It was strange to think they were all him, split into different aspects yet still with distinct personalities and perspectives.

Moving into a building, Ethan climbed into a window and looked down the abandoned street, trying to imagine what the city was like before everything was destroyed. He saw people where there were none, traffic and nature. The city was alive, green and sunny, not grey, dreary and dead. Still, it felt like home in a strange way. After all, a world devoid of life was what he was born into, a seed of hope, one of many and arguably the only specks of life left on the planet. He jumped down from the window and froze upon hearing something, Ethan darted to the door, shielding himself while looking around for the disturbance's origin.

He was small, no larger than a few inches, if anything and rarely was anything his size or shorter. It was safe to say he had everything to fear in a place like this, while he could defend himself, there really was only so much he could do. 9 watched and waited, knowing that no matter what found him, it probably wasn't going to be good.

It was not the first time she’d been in the falling apart city. Her imagination always wandered every time she was there. What was this like before? What were the people like? Was it a productive place with a lot of booming business? Or was it a quieter place with more of an emphasis on the people and the community? Or something else entirely? Whatever it was, it saddened her to see the remnants of what used to be. Lives were lived there and smiles were made. Where were the residents now? Did any one of them survive the Darkness?

That was one reason why she tended to put off her adventures to the animated world. It always just made her so sad. It could partially be the lingering spirit curse that was following her, but there was a little something more. There was a sadness that came with the Darkness and sometimes she had trouble shaking it. Working on her farm eventually helped, but not without a lot of effort. The animals on the farm definitely helped, as well.

There was a hole just her size in the wall she was walking by, so she decided to slip in and investigate. It was better than being out in the open, right? The place was covered with dust, only slightly disturbed by people’s footsteps who had wandered through. The only light was light from the cloud covered sun that entered through the cracked and broken windows. With a sigh, she sat down and pulled her knees up to her chest, suddenly feeling very small and very alone. She should have crossed over with someone.

She heard a noise come from up by the window and she immediately jumped to her feet, automatically afraid that it was some sort of trouble. To her surprise, though, she saw someone perhaps a few inches shorter than herself, seemingly as shocked and alert as herself. “Hello, I – I didn’t mean to frighten you,” she said, approaching carefully.

Ooc: okay I’m just gonna steal all your opens I guess. xD

“Oh!” He exclaimed, jumping back, hand to his chest, though no heart beat within it his emotions were real and strong. He blinked rapidly a few times, the apertures of his eyes clicking loudly as he struggled to process what he was seeing. Another doll? Something like him, yet not like him. She had fewer working parts, yet she was familiar all the same. 9 brought his copper hands together and approached, a smile tugging at the corners of his burlap mouth. “Hello there.” He said, extending his hand to the doll.

“My name’s uh, Ethan. What’s yours?” He paused on his name, unsure whether to introduce himself as 9 or by his human label. His general curiosity kicked into overdrive as he was overcome with the need to learn everything about her. She didn’t seem like a stitch-punk, there was no familiar hum from her soul like he felt with the others, yet she seemed of similar construction. Had the creators made more of them they weren’t aware of? The world was an awfully large place, it made sense, in a way. It saddening him to think the others weren’t here to see this, it made his gut twist uncomfortably, a feeling he hated that lingered from his human self.

“What are you doing out here all alone?” He supposed the same question could have been asked of him. He was, after all, doing the exact same thing, wandering around by himself but he felt he had no other choice. Friends weren’t easy to make, harder to keep and he couldn’t possibly endanger someone else – their choice or not – by allowing them to participate in his missions to right the wrongs of his past. It didn’t seem fair, he’d done enough damage. He was sure his heart and tiny soul would smash and scatter into a million pieces if a friend got hurt on his watch.

He refused to let history repeat.

“Do you know about the portal, need help getting back?” He asked, itching the cloth on his bald head. It made sense for them to stick together given the circumstances, as tiny as they were. Ethan was incredibly careful about reigning in his need to ask one thousand questions about her, so he instead settled for awkward glances and fidgeting with his fingers and sack-body, smoothing out creases and playing with his zipper. Calm down, he reminded himself.

He just couldn’t learn, after everything that happened here he was, struggling to fight his nature and the very thing that got his soul-siblings killed in the first place.
