If they had forests like this back in China, she'd certainly never seen them. The sparse bamboo of her memories made the suffocating press of the trees around her feel almost claustrophobic. Huffing slightly from exertion in the muggy heat it seemed almost impossible that she could be dying of heatstroke so close to the onset of winter. Everywhere else in the world things were preparing for fall, everywhere but here at least. The foliage of these trees was as bright and vibrant a green as ever, "Even the trees are sweating." Straightening from where she'd half bent over to catch her breath, she took a moment to retie her hair into a tight bun. Mentally reminding herself to cut it again sometime soon.

As uneventful as this recon mission was going, Mulan couldn't help but feel like they'd taken a wrong turn somewhere. They were supposed to be checking on reports of refugees camping out past the forest, but aside from one tree that looked like every other tree. She had no clue where they were heading. The environment hardly changed no matter how much they struggled through the dense underbrush.

Still, they walked on.

Pushing forward and using her father's sword like a machete whenever things got too thick to push through. By the time they did finally manage to push out onto an open space...the sky looked ominously dark. Where once looking at the approaching clouds would have offered a welcome relief, a part of her couldn't help the twist in her stomach. Darkness or rain. It was really a toss up which one you'd be getting on any given day. Tearing her eyes away from the sky she tried to get an idea of where they were. The directions said once they'd exited the forest there'd be a hilly span of land that stretched off for a few miles. This encampment was supposedly north half a day's walk from the treeline. Only she didn't see any of that.

"We're lost." She huffed, turning to look over at her friend. No hilly fields, instead flat land that led to what was very obviously a cliff just within sight range.

Overhead thunder announced itself, just as the sky opened like a cork had been pulled out from under it. Part of her wasn't surprised at their luck, the other part was almost relieved at the cold water against her flushed and sweat sticky skin. "This would feel so much more refreshing if I had any idea where we were."

daughter of sand and sun
Jasmine supposed she wasn't being very good company. The princess was ornery. Perhaps that wasn't the right word? Angry? Dejected? Near desperate? She thought her life couldn't be more crazy, but here she was. The Genie she blamed for her world crashing was innocent. The man she fell in love with didn't remember her, and refused to try. Her recon partner disappeared into the Other World after Captain Smith's disappearance and now she was here. Not that Mulan wasn't a great partner, it just.... she wasn't her partner.

That wasn't fair. Jasmine knew she wasn't being fair, but it didn't alleviate the tight feeling in her chest. She wanted to scream, kick, and murder, but that wouldn't change anything. The world around her was still trying to pull her backwards into the tangles and mess of the jungle. She hated the jungle. She wanted to go back to the desert. The sand and the sun beating down on her. She wanted it. She wanted it all back.

Out of her control.

"I thought you brought the map, Mulan," Jasmine answered quickly, wiping sweat off of her brow, wincing at how sharp her voice came out. "Sorry ---- perhaps we should mark where we have been? That is what Cameron and I do." Saying his name made her throat close out of anger but she fought it down. How dare he run away! He just ran and.... left her. Like everyone else. Great.

"At least we can find our way out?"

She'll admit that when it came to the resistance and the other members Mulan was largely out of the loop. It wasn't for lack of trying, or because she didn't like their company. She'd met enough of them to know that they were all decent people she wouldn't mind being friends with. It was just...difficult. She might not outright voice her own feelings, but she still stung from the last time she'd gotten close to a large group like that. While she understood the reason she was left behind on that mountain- understood that she could have been outright killed for her actions. It did little to lessen the sense of betrayal that wrapped itself around her heart. It made it difficult to grow used to being around large groups again, and so she only vaguely knew about the circumstances currently surrounding her friend's mood.

She understood, but that did little to lessen the flinch that followed when Jasmine finally spoke. She wasn't expecting the sharp tone, and it made her bite down on her lip to stop herself from snapping back. The last thing either of them needed was to start bickering for no reason at all. Though she did remain silent for a moment longer as she moved forward. A last ditch effort to find somewhere that was clear enough for her not to be shoving branches and vines out of her face, before she gave up and tried to tug the map out of her satchel.

She'd forgotten she had one and for a moment she chastised herself for that fact...until she remembered exactly why she hadn't been using it. The area they were in was essentially just a green splotch on the paper. Formless, and without any lines or trails leading in or out of it.

A sigh, "We'll have to climb up and see if we can get some idea of landmarks then." She held out the paper, offering it to the other woman. "Because otherwise this isn't giving us much in the way of help." Placing a hand on her hip she tilted her head up towards the canopy. "And don't apologize." When her attention was back on her friend she offered a smile. "You've got a lot on your mind, and I know I'm not who you're used to working with." She worked on her own for the most part, and this took some getting used to on her end too.

A short pause, "Now...who gets to climb the tree?"
