Aria had been looking forward to the exhibition at the art gallery for ages. This particular one was showing paintings from each region of the United States. They were all so beautiful and it was wonderful to see the best parts of the country all together. She did her best to get to these exhibitions as much as she could because art had such a special place in her heart. She’d spent all evening there and it went by so quickly that she almost didn’t realize that the gallery was close to closing! Embarrassed, she apologized to the owner and the staff for keeping them and made her way out of the building.

The kind owner offered to call her a cab so she would get home safely, but as she lived just a ways down the street, Aria did not think a cab was necessary. With a smile, she happily waved and said goodbye to everyone before she finally headed out of the gallery.

It was a chilly evening, so Aria popped the collar of her jacket to keep her neck warm. Aside from the leftover chatter from the rest of the gallery goes, the evening was fairly silent. The echo of her shoes against the pavement seemed to echo through the seemingly empty alleys. However, she couldn’t help but notice that her footsteps were not the only ones around.

Every time she stopped, the other footsteps stopped, too. Aria did not want to jump to the conclusion that she was being followed, but why else would they be mimicking her? She could feel her heart beating faster and she tried to think quickly about what she should do. Aria took a few more steps before ducking down an alley. She thought it was a walkthrough alley, so she was horrified to find that she walked straight up to a brick wall of one of the nearby buildings.

Before she could even think to do anything else, she heard running coming towards her. Aria turned around just as a man drove a knife into her stomach. She gave a sharp gasp and fell against the wall. The man was masked and pulled his knife out, causing her to slide to the ground. Aria quickly put her hands to her wound, a horrified look on her face. Between the shock and the pain, all she could do was watch the man run out of the alley.

Ooc: Hope this is alright! You can have Gabe catch the guy or not, up to you!

One more light
It was turning out to be one of those days for Gabriel. Sleepless nights and busy days when a case was becoming close to closed but wasn't quite there, while work was piling up elsewhere. His mind was full of evidence and other threads of information, testimonies and court dates. He was desperate to close this one off. It had been a long haul, full of twist, turns and much more grief than he would have liked to see. Life was cruel sometimes and some things were unpredictable in their complexity. Try as he might, he still couldn't pin down some human behavior and it was maddening.

Collar turned up against the chill, with his hands in his pockets, he walked. For Gabe, strolls like this weren't uncommon, sometimes he purposefully distanced himself from things in order to gain a clearer perspective and it kept him in shape, but the health benefits were really a secondary concern. He'd mapped out the city fairly well in his mind, he knew what streets went where and what short cuts to take as well as what ones lead to dead ends. He owned a bike but had no issue in paying a fare for a taxi every now and then.

He was passing the Art Gallery and taking a detour down its side passages when he saw it, a young woman. He didn't pay her much mind at first however the more he noticed her the more he realized she seemed nervous, lost, almost a little frightened. The scene was ringing all sorts of red flags in his mind but he forced himself to be rational – not everything was a crime, evil wasn't waiting behind every corner, every brick or every door. Sometimes he had to remind himself of that fact, he saw so much death and destruction that it was hard to see past it all to the good in the world. The smiles on the faces of families he helped, always ended up grounding him in the present, but at times these moments were far between.

She went one way and he went another, that was that really, until moments later he saw a man scamper by in the shadows, knife in hand and mask obscuring his face. "Hey!" Gabe yelled, but the perpetrator was quickly gone, darting away with a miraculous speed. Initially, he gave chase, intent on questioning the shady individual but something stuck out in the back of his mind. The girl. The alley she'd gone down was a dead end. His stomach dropped with the realization and he ran back towards her, hoping that he was simply paranoid and she was fine.

What greeted him as he rounded the corner was something out of his deepest nightmares. He ran toward her, taking off his jacket in one swift movement and cradled her in his arms, pressing the cloth into her wound. He could see blood, a lot of it, from a no doubt deep and traumatic wound. Gabe relied on his training to stay calm, but underneath it all he was in a panic. "Hey, hey, it's okay. You're going to be okay. My name is Detective Gabriel Richter and I'm a SFPD Detective. I'm going to get you help." He flipped out his phone, called in the crime and ordered units to scour the area, begging the ambulance to hurry.

"What's your name sweetheart?" He asked, keeping his voice soft and level. He wasn't going to loose her, he refused. She was going to be fine and he was going to find the man who did this to her. All the while in the back of his mind he tortured himself. He should have gone with his gut, he should have trusted what his mind was saying. He could have stopped this.

It all happened so quickly that she barely had any time to react. Aria could have sworn this alleyway was a walkthrough one, but she was so bad with directions anyway. She could see exactly what the man was going to once he entered the alley after her, but it was like her body was moving in slow motion, if it was moving at all. Aria could not remember being so terrified as she was then. Why did he do it? She was not doing anything wrong; she was not bothering anyone. All she wanted to do was go home, have a cup of tea, and go to bed.

Aria hesitantly looked down to her abdomen, where the knife had cut through her favorite pink blouse. Although, that was obviously the least of her worries. She watched in horror as the blood began to get soaked up into her shirt slowly. The intensity of the pain was just now starting to hit her. She let out a small whimper as the pain continued to register in her mind. A part of her wanted to shift in order to get a better look at the wound, but she was afraid.

As much as she was panicking, she did think about her phone in her purse. She needed to call someone for help. Just as she was reaching for her purse, though, she heard footsteps. Aria immediately thought that perhaps it was the man coming back to finish the job, but it wasn’t. The figure was illuminated by the alley lights, giving him a heavenly look. An angel had been sent to her rescue!

She was so relieved that she began to cry and she reached out for him. “Thank you,” barely more than a whisper. Another whimper escaped as the man – the detective – placed his jacket to her wound to help stop the bleeding.

A – Aria,” she said, slightly comforted by the gentleness of his voice. She glanced down at her wound, then back up at him. “I don’t – Am I going to be okay?

A thousand things cycled through his mind at once, all terrible. They cut through him, dragging his soul over hot coals but he had no time to dwell on them. There was a life in his arms, flickering like a flame in the wind and he was desperate to protect it. Gabriel gently stroked the girl’s hair in some pitiful attempt to comfort her until help arrived. It was against policy, but he wasn’t thinking of rules and regulations as Aria sunk to that awful place between worlds, where one small thing could tip the balance of life to death.

“It’s okay sweetheart.” He replied, shaking his head as he clenched his jaw and willed the tears in the corner of his eyes to stay where they were. Normally a picture of professionalism, he was almost a wreck before this girl, control slipping through his fingers with every passing moment. Was this how his wife felt when she died? Was this what his daughter looked like? Only he wasn’t there for them, they had passed alone and he was left behind with nothing but their memory.

“Aria.” He repeated, smiling through his worry. When she looked to her wound he clenched his jaw and blinked slowly, desperate to appear calm and collected – determined to provide her with a pillar of strength. It was the least he could do, given what had happened. No one deserved this, no one deserved to suffer alone. The victims he faced were normally long gone. He didn’t treat them any differently, affording them every respect, but something about this – baring witness and trying to actively help, bulldozed his carefully crafted walls.

“Oh god…” He choked on his words, swallowing hard and smiled through his emotions. “Yeah.” He nodded, gently moving a strand of hair from her face. “You’re going to be fine.” One hand on her wound, he gently stroked her head with the other. “You’re going to be just fine Aria. Stay with me.” He urged. Please stay with me. He begged in his mind.
