The portal could be as cruel as it was benevolent. As readily able to rescue you from the dangers of this world as it was to drop you into the midst of it. He'd been everywhere from scorching deserts to boggy swamps, from the tattered remains of a suburban neighborhood to the crumbling spires of an abandoned city. The darkness had done a number on their world and while some places seemed familiar- he'd yet to find any place that felt even remotely like home. He hadn't seen the remnants of their tower tower, Maire's kingdom, or even the mountain range that had served as his hatchery in a long time. Places that no matter how much they'd changed or how twisted the darkness made them, he knew he'd recognize on sight. While he didn't actively look for these places, he kept expecting to see them the next time he crossed that bridge. Hoping ( as futile as that sensation might seem most days ) that perhaps he might find some answer to Maire's curse in their old lands....or even someone of his own kind. Not that he hadn't met a great number of dragons since they'd been chased from their tower. Just.....not the sort of dragons he'd been looking for, he supposed.

It was no secret that he missed his kind. As much as males of his species might prefer their solitude, it was always with the knowledge that somewhere out there, were others just like him. Now, he couldn't be so certain. What if he was the last? What if their world had been destroyed completely when the darkness struck? After all,....shouldn't he have found it by now? Or was he just, not looking hard enough? Two sides seemed more than eager to fight within him- on the one hand: he wanted his family. On the other: he didn't know if he could trust other dragons around Maire. They might be honor bound creatures, and they each generally developed their own idea of what a 'treasure' might be, but it wasn't unheard of for one dragon to covet what another thought was most important. Did he dare run that risk?

Life was full of unwanted risks these days. Each step across the bridge whispered promises of possible threats lurking on the other side. The darkness itself or monsters bigger and more powerful than he was, even tainted magic users. All of these things would easily put an end to his travels and make it so that he could never return to the relative safety of San Francisco.

Yet, he kept stepping through. Eager to feel his wings stretch above his head, and to work the kinks out of his sore and cramped muscles. Even in the surprisingly icy tundra he'd been left at, he felt at home in his own skin. The fire that burned beneath his scales intensified to a fierce glow within his chest- a reaction to the sudden change in temperature of the world around him. The start of summer in one world, and yet a snap of cold in the other.

Good thing he wasn't bothered by cold- and in fact the heat radiating off of him was more than enough to melt the snow around him. Steam streamed from his jaws as orange tinted eyes scanned his surroundings. He hadn't been here before, at least not that he could remember....and if he had- it was at a time when there wasn't at least 5 inches of snow covering the ground.

Sniffing tentatively at the air, he caught the hint of a scent. Something soft, and foreign among the snow. Strong enough that he turned towards it, head lowering slightly, as he moved forward to follow.

The portal hated her.

That was the only explanation for it's continued mistreatment of her. What kind of magic thought to save her one moment by belching her out in a world where everything was loud and new, encasing her in a strange new body and throwing a wrench in a cycle that had been going on for a millennia but the next thrust her into a frozen tundra. Her. The herald of summer. She was as ill equipped for this turn of events as anything ever could be. This was far more than just a change of weather for her, stepping from the blazing but comforting heat of the city to the bone chilling numbness of the frozen landscape around her, this was life threatening for the Sprite. Snow and ice were not of her kind, they belonged to her sister, and while she appreciated the beauty of the season, she didn't appreciate being in it. Moments from stepping through, the portal ever so helpfully winking out behind her, and she was already chilled through. Chilled through and in very real danger of losing consciousness. It was that, more than the fact that she could no longer feel her extremities, that worried the warm-natured sprite. This wasn't her woods. This wasn't the city. This was somewhere in the vast nowhere land of the portal. There was no hope of any of she knew finding her out here. She hadn't told anyone where she was going and even if she had, there was no guarantee that the portal would deem to help whoever came to look for her. With that in mind, her sisters and their companions could search for years and never find her. No hope of her coyote finding her either as he was still lost to her. He couldn't carry her somewhere safe. But there was a very real possibility of being found by those that were touched by the darkness. Twisted bestial shapes, unnatural and always hungry. Those things could easily find her in a compromising position, unable to defend herself or even call out for help, and who knew what they would do to her.

She didn't want to find out.

So Thea kept walking. Trudging through the snow, hands clasped across her middle, as if that would help keep any lingering warmth inside her, and golden shimmering curls being blown out behind her. Her hands and feet were numb and sheer will was the only force that allowed her to keep going. She'd never been so cold in her life, not even in that freak snowstorm that had occurred last winter in the city. That too had been frightening, as she'd been caught out in the thick of it, but she had made it with a little help from her friends and family. Out here in this storm—if it could even be considered an actual storm to anyone else besides the summer sprite—it seemed that she would have to make it on her own. Perhaps she should look for some kind of shelter in the desolate landscape. Something at least to block the chilling wind and keep the snow from her skin. She doubted that she would find anything as cozy as her log had been but at this point anything was better than being completely exposed to the cold. And if it was small, then hopefully the darkness infused creatures would overlook it while she gathered her strength.

She just needed to rest. For a moment or two. Gain feeling back in her hands and feet and then she could continue on. But if she stopped now…would she wake again? Would she sleep here, unguarded until the snows passed? If they passed? Her world spun a little as she swayed, nearly collapsing in the snow with exhaustion. It would be easy to give up here. To fall into the relative safety of her dreamscape. To run with her Coyote again. To be careless once more. But the worried looks on her sisters’ faces swam before her eyes. No, she couldn't stop. They needed her. She needed them. She had held back that strange fire long enough to buy them time. She could continue walking until the portal reappeared for her. She had to. One step at a time. One. Step. At. A. Time. Three steps into her new mantra, she tripped over an unseen root and fell sprawling in the snow.

The portal must really hate her.

As little as he was bothered by cold, this wasn't necessarily his favorite environment. Their kind preferred the heat and warmth of volcanoes and more tropical climates. They could live just fine in snowy tundras and he'd heard of a fair number of dragons making their home in places like this- those of his kind that wanted solitude above all else. Yet as far as he was concerned the icy cold of the surrounding landscape left a lot to be desired. It was like an alien planet when placed alongside the memories of all the places he'd lived and visited. Even the snow-capped mountains where he'd been raised had not felt as frozen and unyielding as this landscape. He'd have turned and headed back through the portal, or taking flight to warmer climates were it not for that curious scent. Like a drop of sunlight being steadily engulfed by all the snow and cold. Someone or something had moved through here not long before he'd crossed- and his first instinct was to worry. As far as he knew the majority of the creatures and humans he'd met across this side of the portal were not made for weather like this. He could easily imagine some poor member of the resistance, or a wayward soul just looking to keep their memories. Finding themselves abandoned in a world of snow and ice.

Moving forward, he lowered his head closer to the snow, and breathed in. The exhale that followed carried a single word and the flicker of orange flames.. His breath steaming outwards and making a trail glisten softly in the snow. Footsteps long gone but tinged magically with orange and glowing softly in the general direction of whoever it was that had come through here. Sometimes, as much as he harped against it, magic had its uses. While he didn't necessarily consider himself a magic-user, he was a dragon and magic was in his blood. Some spells were ingrained in his memory and were used so casually he barely noticed he'd done them at all. This one was no different, it lit up soft glowing trail that edged into the distance

He heard her before he saw her. The sound of someone falling into the snow, forced his gaze up from the trail, to its source. The closer he got, the stronger that smell became. Sunshine. Warmth. A field in summer. Scents he recognized, but that most definitely did not belong in their current location. He slowed, aware that given his size and his species, he did not exactly look docile. Wings tucking a little tighter against his sides, and head remaining low so as not to appear like a threat.

"Are you alright?" Voice like gravel, deep and rumbling. Beneath him the snow was turning to slush against the heat of his scales- steam wafting up around him. "I'm no threat, promise."
