There were times in every relationship that tested the strength between those involved, moments that would call everything in to question that would inevitably determine the future of where it was going. Of course, to Terence those times were usually around page 256… when the couple would find their first obstacle… something to argue about that wasn’t just something stupid like clothes on the floor or leaving the toilet seat up. Something substantial… that meant something to them that was worth fighting for, something worth risking it all for. Something that could for every intent and purpose of the novel be a game changer for the couple… that could lead them in to a stronger, well respected and supported relationship. Or something that would shatter them so completely that even trying to put the fragments together would leave the once picture perfect couple chipping away slowly under the pressure. The unfortunate thing for Terence was that his love story didn’t have pages…

He didn’t get to read the slow build up to the climax, the details and thoughts of the main character privy to the third party’s’ eyes. He didn’t get to piece together what was going to happen or even mentally prepare himself for the journey he was about to take with the beloved characters he had grown to love and appreciate during that story. He was the main character and for so long had been oblivious to the slowly brewing storm. So much so… that when the clouds rolled in and the sky shuddered with anger he could only feel the vibrations of betrayal and fear shaking his foundation. This had been the point in their story… their first test of strength to see if truly they were meant to be… and he hadn’t been ready for it. Terence had never thought himself a main anything… had never thought to look for that moment. Yet, in the wake of it all, taking a step back to clear his mind… he saw it. He didn’t want this to be the wave that sunk the ship… the argument that crumbled their foundation. The ring was trivial and yet it wasn’t… but he knew he wasn’t ready to give up. No so easily.

There was no telling where they stood with each other… that night had been cast aside and seemingly forgotten between the two. A few weeks of light texting and (albeit purposefully) conflicting schedules and suddenly everything was right in their world. Or as right as it could be for two people learning to navigate around each other again without stepping on toes or risk tipping the boat. They had found peace, though there was always uncertainty between them. Something unspoken that neither dared to test the waters of too afraid to risk the ground they were standing on again. The wound had healed… but it scarred… a silent but permanent reminder. Despite it all though, the sparrowman was determined to not let the love he felt die… or to let the woman he cared so much for escape his grasp. Even though the calmness unnerved him, and the way they side stepped the entire fight perturbed him, they had moved forward, and in his eyes as shaky as the ground they stood on was… it was growing stronger.

It had been a spur of the moment decision when he was wandering the farmer’s market, picking up birdseed for his darling birds and of course, Pepper—Lina’s sparrow he had rescued for her. One moment he had his arms full of seed and the next, he was loading the other with fresh vegetables and desperately seeking out culinary advice from the lovely old lady selling her hand made cheeses. He wasn’t the best Chef in the world—his baking skills leaving much to be desired—but he had wanted to do something nice. Things had been weird, albeit fine, and he just wanted to surprise her and settle the unsteady waters they were sailing.

Although he had been given a key, he had yet to use it… too nervous to be entering a home that he wasn’t entirely welcome in. Not that he wasn’t… but he had yet to meet Lina’s new roommate and didn’t know where she stood on the whole ‘stranger having a key’ issue. Though the longer he waited the more awkward it would be when they did finally meet. It probably would have been a good idea to shoot Lina a message that he was stopping by, but then the surprise of a homemade dinner waiting for her when she got home would be spoiled. He would just have to hope that tonight was her roommate’s night to work or that she had other plans…knowing he’d hate for his first impression to be the weirdo thief who had broken in to use her stove… and not the loving and doting boyfriend that he was.

Hand written recipe in front of him like a guiding light, bright blue eyes had all of his fresh, new ingredients in order and ready to start to work. Although he wasn’t very talented at cooking… the sparrowman was more than keen on trying new things. Besides… he had only ever tried, and failed, at baking. So, this was an entirely new venture. Ratatouille… it would be a journey, he was sure. But one worth taking. Grabbing the first of the vegetables, a vibrant yellow pepper, he scanned the recipe for the millionth time—making sure he followed the heartfelt instructions as they were so it would be just right. Drawn in and enveloped so completely by the daunting task—the piles of veggies in front of him enough to make him nervous about whether or not he’d have time—the sound of the door opening and closing fell upon deaf ears… the only sound he heard that of his mind whirring with life and the soft hum on his lips as he started the working song the dust keepers had made to pass the time while that made dust rations.

some nameless days ---x
It had been awhile now that Lulu had lived with Tahlia. There had been a period of adjustment -- getting used to one another's habits and schedules and the million other little quirks that people tended to have. In due time, they'd found their rhythm and, for the most part, had avoided many of the bumps that were often associated with a new cohabitation situation. A course likely smoothed by their friendship and the similarities in their personalities. Getting used to living with someone else again after having lived alone, albeit in the small space provided to her at Haven Hill, was less a trial and more an act of recollection. Back in Atlantica, Tallulah and her sisters had shared their space. After spending most of her life living in close quarters with six siblings, sharing a space with her fairy-like friend was no hardship at all.

After a trip (or two) to the local IKEA store, their apartment had soon turned into a comfortable space that held no little hint of the two curators of it. They could have been living there for years rather than the short time they had been for how completely they had made it their own and settled into it. While the common areas remained neat and presentable for the most part, Tallulah's room was in a constant state of riot. Tidy as much as it could be, for the girl was not a slob for lack of a better word, the space was to, perhaps, beyond capacity. Everything had its place, she would contend, but at a glance it looked to be the opposite. An over burdened book case stood in one corner, dog-eared paperback stacked in less-than-orderly rows. Knick-knacks and crafting projects on every other surface.

The main focal point of the room was the bed: slightly too large for the space that housed it and most of it taken up with pillows of varying sizes. That was where the former mermaid resided currently. With headphones snuggly over her ears, she hummed quietly to the upbeat music that poured through them. For the last hour, she had been working industriously stringing together seashells she had been slowly collecting over the summer. A shell curtain she intended to hang in the door way of her closet or, perhaps, if she mastered the pattern she'd seen on the internet, as a tapestry of sorts -- her walls the only thing lacking in decoration at the present moment.

So engrossed in her work, and beneath the cover of music, Lulu didn't hear the front door open. Only a lull between tracks allowed the noises of someone shuffling around the kitchen to break her concentration if only barely. For a couple of minutes, she simply assumed it was Tahlia. Was she cooking? Curious, Lu ditched her headphones and left her room, padding heedlessly down the hall towards the kitchen. That is, until she heard the humming. It was far too deep to be her roommate's pretty soprano. Tallulah froze, pressing herself to wall just outside the kitchen's entrance. Eyes wide, she peeked around the corner as the intruder's back was turned, her mind grasping at what she should do. Had she forgotten to lock the door behind her earlier? Was he stealing their food?

As stealthily as she could, she inched onto the linoleum and edged around the counters while his back was still turned to her. Too late it would occur to her that she ought to have retreated to her room instead and called for help; her brain too befuddled by panic and a self-righteous fury at having been broken into to realize that she knew the blond-headed man in her kitchen. Blue eyes zeroed in on a fork left unattended and she made a grab at it, silently palming the utensil and gripping it between her fingers. Arm stretched out and prongs forward in self-defense, the young woman cleared her throat. "Who are you?" she demanded to get his attention, trying to make her voice sound more severe than it likely did. "And what do you think you're doing?"

The sparrowman was normally more astute, so used to his environments that new sounds did not fall on deaf ears. Even under his humming, his tone deep and slightly off key, he could normally hear the shift of the room as it changed. He would grow used to the sound of the air kicking on, or the slight creaks that filled the air… and they would all just be part of the personality of wherever he was. It was the shuffling, the movement, the sound of breathing that he could normally pick out, sounds not matching the simple twisting off of dust satchels as it were or the pauses in the working song as he stopped to take a breath. But this wasn't home, this wasn't the dust depot or his small living space in Haven. This was Lina's home, foreign ground he hadn't set foot on without first being invited in… he did not yet know the creaks or the sounds it made, and certainly any shuffling-the sound of footsteps moving above him-were lost to him as he continued to go about following the directions on the paper in front of him.

Had he heard the sound above him, the creaking of the stairs even… he would have stopped and made a move to announcing himself so as to not startle the girl. He had known coming in to this surprise evening that he might potentially have a run in with the mysteriously never around when he was around roommate Lina swore she had. Humorously he had teased her about making it all up, that she just wanted to move out and be on her own and thought having a roommate would make it more plausible. Of course it was a joke, and he knew the girl existed if only in the slight differentiation of taste-something in the place standing out as very clearly Lina's and others he felt… not so much. But all the same, as long as she had lived there and as many times has he had come to visit or pick her up… she was never around to finally meet him. Elusive creature she was...

Regardless, he would have been more careful as to not scare her in to thinking he had broken in and was some sort of weirdo for using her stove as if it were his own. Awkward as it would be to call out in to the emptiness, admittedly he had done at first when he opened the door trying to avoid all of the awkwardness, but his voice clearly not loud enough to draw attention to the other inhabitant (that or she was listening to music or watching something), it was far more awkward to be caught. Caught like he was now… his heart stopping in his chest when her voice broke through his song, tone deep as she demanded to know who he was and what he was doing in her home.

The knife in his hand stopped mid chop, the strip of pepper falling to the ground as he halted his motions so as to not further alarm the girl who, by no fault of her own, assumed she had walked in on some devastating home break in where in the perp had some fetish of using their kitchen first. He swallowed the growing lump in his throat, and the grip on the knife lessened as he gently set it down on the butting board and lifted his hands in a defensive stance. Terence knew after it was all said and done this would make for a great story to tell Lina when she got home, the three of them (if her roommate could forgive him that is) sharing a laugh over a home cooked meal (or more than likely the takeout from the Chinese place of which he had a menu stuffed in his pocket). But in those seconds, it didn't matter his desire to surprise his girlfriend and make amends for the mistake he knew he had made. It mattered what he did and said so as to avoid getting punched in the face for intruding and scaring her.

"I'm Lina's…" he stopped for a moment, sighing, his head hanging low for a short moment as he realized that he was probably the only one who called her by her real name on this side of the portal. It had become a habit, one he truly loved since he thought her name beautiful just as she was, but he knew he had to stop. It was confusing for multiple parties when many of them knew about Tahlia, but questioned who Lina was. "Tahlia's boyfriend…" he admitted to the unseen woman behind him, wanting to answer her questions to avoid any sort of altercation. Deciding he had been as nonthreatening as possible, giving the girl the time and assurance that he wasn't an attacker, he slowly began to turn around. Wanting to face this girl and finally put a face on the elusive woman, he figured it would be best for her to see the genuine and friendly smile he wore rather than his broad, shoulders and back. "I just was trying to make a surprise dinner for her," he started to explain as he finished his turn, looking to the woman.

Blue eyes widened in shock when he saw the fork pointed at him, hardly expecting to be threatened let alone with an eating utensil, and he gasped, jumping back in to the counter he had been in front of working on. A hand jolted to the counter to keep him being startled too much and grounding him, though the jostling of the cutting board and the sound of the knife made his heart race when it wobbled off and fell to the kitchen floor. Immediately he withdrew his hand to avoid getting cut, though the movement was quick and erratic, hardly anything more and a poorly executed reflex save as the loud clamor echoed through the kitchen. In seconds he had reduced all of his work to a mess on the kitchen floor, and more upsetting than the ruined, wasted pepper was that he simultaneously gave this woman a terrible first impression. He had hoped meeting this roommate would have been better… He was smoother than this… Casting his eyes up from the ground, to look at the woman finally, they widened in a shock...

some nameless days ---x
Fear had a way if clouding one’s judgment, blocking all logical thought, and forcing one to rely solely on instinct. Tallulah was only certain of a finite number of things. First, that she was home alone and the fork in her hand was her only mode of defense. Second, she did not have her phone on her (she would remember leaving it behind in her bedroom later but spared not a thought to where it could be) and that she had no means of calling for help save for her voice. And lastly, that a space she had considered safe had seemingly been invaded by an unidentified person. Was she afraid? Of course she was. She trembled with it. But she’d been afraid before. Had faced far worse before. And she wasn’t about to let someone make her feel vulnerable in her own home. If she was to face off with the intruder alone then so be it. She’d rather have the knife he held in bis hand than the smaller utensil grasped in her own, but the fork was all she had to work with and she would do her best. In those brief seconds between which she had first spoken and when the man began to reply, all she could really hear was her own heartbeat pounding in her ears. Her fear refused to allow any rational thought by.

So, when he turned, she was prepared to make her move. And move she did. Lunging forward, she jabbed at him without direction, aiming in the general area of the arm the had held the knife. She was satisfied when it met its mark (sort of) in his shoulder as he bent down and recoiled quickly. The move sent a jolt of adrenaline coursing through her body and she bounced her weight from one foot the other, readying for any retaliation. Too late did his words register with her: Tahlia’s boyfriend. Lulu stopped cold, the fork still positioned defensively in front of her as her thoughts whirled. Surprise dinner. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Eyes widened and trained on the blond head before her, her breaths came in panicked heaves as cold dread replaced the fear from a moment before. She tossed the fork onto the counter as if it burned her suddenly feeling more than a little foolish for what she had thought. And what had she thought? A robbery? Surely burglars didn’t break into someone’s house in order to cook themselves a mean. The evidence of said meal was scattered all about the kitchen and she saw it all in hyperfocus now that she wasn’t in defense mode. A profuse apology was already rising to her lips when the man raised his head.

For the second time, shock made her more reactionary than usual. Terence? She practically shouted. ”You’re Tahlia’s boyfriend?” Even to her own ears, her voice sounded harsher than she’d meant it to. It wasn’t that she was angry -- that wasn’t it at all. At least, she didn’t think she was angry but the former mermaid was such a jumble of emotions that it was difficult to pick out one from the other. Astonishment was a strong one and more easily discernible in the mess of it all. In all the time they had been living together and even before, when they’d both been living at Haven Hill, Lulu had heard a number of things about her friend’s significant other in passing. She didn’t know how much the other redhead talked about her but she gathered it wasn’t with enough detail for Terence to have cottoned on to who exactly was living with his girlfriend -- and vice versa. It was almost comical in an objective way but Lulu felt mortified by the possibility that she just hadn’t been paying enough attention to her roommate before now or had even asked after her boyfriend’s name of all things. Not that it would have made much of a difference, it wasn’t that uncommon of a name but Lu preferred to think she would have made the connection had absorbed that tidbit of information.

It seemed almost unfathomable to have gone so long without realizing. Even now pieces were beginning to fall into place. A snippet of conversation between them from several months ago came back to her and sent her hand flying to her mouth. She and Tahlia had moved in around the same time Terence’s girlfriend had been moving -- and he’d been too busy to help her, he’d said, so he hadn’t even remembered that she’d been moving as well. Tahlia’s boyfriend hadn’t been able to help her out either. It had been such a small detail at the time, somewhat innocuous even in its coincidence, and yet now it seemed glaringly obvious to her. ”Oh starfish,” she groaned, covering her quickly reddening face with her hands. ”You’re Tahlia’s boyfriend! And I stabbed you!” Belatedly, she realized the enormity of what she had done and uncovered her face with a gasp. ”Did I hurt you? I’m so, so sorry, Terence. I didn’t know it was you, I thought --” Lulu cut herself off, biting her lip in embarrassment. He probably knew what she thought, given how she’d approached him. ”I’m sorry,” she repeated with a squeak.

The sense of disbelief was overwhelming when he saw her face, focusing more now on the familiar details than any time before. But the moment was short, the stabbing pain suddenly in his shoulder causing him to recoil in to the back counter further and squeeze his eyes closed, hand lifting to grip at his attacked shoulder. He was lucky the cutting board hadn’t ben as secured as he thought, the board sliding further back when he recoiled rather than remaining where it was and the knife he had discarded playing a potentially dangerous role. Jaw clenched tightly and a hiss leaving his lips, the distraction of his friend wasn’t enough to deter him from the accidental stabbing he had just become victim to.

“No no…” he started, his voice strained as he turned his head and peeked an eye open to try and examine the damage to his shoulder, “I know… you didn’t know it was me.” he got out, heaving a sigh when he saw the four pinpricks of red blood seeping through his shirt. He gritted his teeth, head shaking at how much conviction she had put behind that attack, the fork a devasting weapon in the right hands. And while he was no home intruder, and certainly didn’t want to hurt her, it still appeared that way. He couldn’t blame her, as much as the throbbing in his shoulder was her fault. Had the roles been reversed he too probably would have stabbed first and asked questions later—though the question that certain begged to be asked but left unanswered between them: what was an intruder doing cooking instead of stealing?

Slowly he looked back to the ginger and offered a meager smile, as best he could for the aching in his shoulder he now had to work with. Of course it was only a flesh wound… nothing that had him out for the count or needing to go to an Urgent Care to get looked at… but enough so for him to feel the pain and be deterred from the already difficult challenge of cooking a meal. Thank the second star he had the forethought to grab that new Chinese place’s menu while he was out. Otherwise they would have been out a dinner plan… not that that was even on his mind in those moments.

“Care if I go sit for a minute there cowgirl?” he questioned half-heartedly, albeit jokingly. He could have put more thought behind it, not even really knowing where he pulled cowgirl from except for one of the romance novels he read and the concept of them being fierce protectors and fighters, but he just wanted to get the bleeding to stop. Playful eyebrow raised, he turned to grab a paper towel and dampened it slightly at the sink before moving to take a seat at their kitchen table. Tugging at the neck hole of his shirt, not wanting to make the situation anymore awkward by half undressing, he surveyed the damage upon closer inspection. It was a bit difficult to see, the angle odd and required slight straining, but thankfully it was already starting to stop bleeding. Gently dabbing at it, the sparrowman looked back to his friend, his smile softening.

“You’d think we’d have known this sort of information before now…” he laughed, sighing as the coolness from the towel seemed to calm down the redness and heat he felt from the slight injury. He’d probably need a bit of help putting some antibacterial crème on it and bandaging it, but that would be later… once this awkward moment was put behind them and they could just laugh. Though admittedly, who knew just how long that would take. Despite telling her it was okay, despite knowing it was an accident and she wouldn’t have knowingly hurt him if she knew it was him, she still looked upset… embarrassed even. And only time would make that better.

“Hey, come on now Lulu… there is nothing to be sorry about, it was an accident.” he offered with a half smile, motioning for her to come sit with him. Even if they decided to finish dinner together, taking a moment to talk and have a break wasn’t a bad idea. Besides, it still felt very unreal that this girl who he had been friends with for so long was his girlfriend’s roommate and he didn’t know. He would have thought that that was something he should know, especially considering how long Lulu and Lina had been rooming together. Yet, other than a very obvious detail he neglected to even draw conclusions from, there really wasn’t much of an opportunity to bring it up. It was just months of odd timing and coincidence that Lulu had never been home, or had been in her room any time Terence had come over… It had only been a matter of time before they finally met… it was just a shame it had to be with such odd circumstances. Laughing finally, the pain still present but more of a dull, slow ache he smiled. “Think of it this way… we have a really funny meet-cute story to tell Lina when she comes home,” he laughed with a wink, trying to lighten the mood as best he could.
