dreamer, it's easy to lose yourself
in onward motion
There was something about naps that were rather divine. Rosemary couldn’t pinpoint when exactly it had become a habit for her to slip into her bed in the afternoon and doze for an hour or two but suddenly it had and she didn’t regret them at all. Wasted time, perhaps, but a delicious waste that she thoroughly enjoyed. Soft instrumental music piping in through her earbuds blocked out the noise of the city beyond the window above her bed as she lay curled across her pillows, an afghan warming her usually cold feet. It wasn’t long at all before she drifted off, dreaming in watercolors that painted fields of wildflowers and clouds as soft as puffs of cotton. For once, it wasn’t the full dreamscape she found herself in. Just the lovely little landscape that more resembled the painting she had recently been enamored with at the museum. She hadn’t thought to make a friend of a stranger over it but she rather thought she had and it gladdened her heart. Too easy was it to feel burdened by the shadows that stretched across her memory much like the blanket tangling her legs. Art and new friends, much like naps, were pieces of time she didn’t mind letting slip away from her.

If her nap went longer today than usual, she gave it no thought. The light was slanting through her curtains in a way that hinted at the coming evening and she harrumphed loudly. Though she knew she ought to get up, it was difficult to rouse herself from the comfort of her bed; a long stretch was the most she managed after several minutes of attempting to rustle up the gumption. Stifling a yawn, she dislodged one of her earbuds enough to once again hear the sounds of the outside world. It wasn’t the traffic outside or chirping birds or even the noisy neighbor blaring music as they worked outside that caught her attention. Someone, or something, was banging around in the apartment. Curious, she groggily dragged herself to a sitting position, brown hair in a wild array of wisps around her face. Impatient, she brushed it back with a hand as she disentangled herself from her blankets and slipped out of bed.

Body stiff from the singular position she must have kept while asleep, she groaned a little as she padded across the floor to her door. The sounds grew curious and curiouser as she followed them out into the hall. It was one of her roommates, Rosemary was certain, but which one and what they were doing she could not guess. Her sock-covered feet made next to no sound as she made her way to the kitchen. Bleary-eyed, she sighed as she caught sight of who the source of all the noise. Giving into the yawn this time, she sank down into a chair at the table with a sigh. Somehow, having done very little in the way of work that day, her knees ached liked a woman’s twice her age at least. It was often this way; though her reflection in the mirror displayed someone clearly in their early twenties, her whole body felt heavy with age. As if they had already carried a lifetime’s worth of burdens. For this reason, she was rather concerned with what actual old age would bring.

Likely, she’d be one of those women who shriveled as they aged like a prune in the summer sun. Wincing, she eyed her tea kettle across the room with regret. As much as she wanted a good cup of tea, she had not the energy to muster enough just at the moment to set about making it. Instead, she propped one elbow up on the table in front of her, cupping her chin in her hand as brown eyes followed her roommate about the kitchen. It didn’t look like cooking but she could not think of what else her friend could be up to. ”Naus…?” Rosemary began, admittedly a little querulously in her still half-sleeping state. ”What are you doing?”

electrified, we burn all night.

There was always work to be done. Learning to do. All that sort of stuff. Things that were important in Nausicaa’s life. She had to figure this out. She and the others were so close to a new breakthrough, she just knew it. They were going to learn something incredible about a few of the plants they had… But then they had to go home. They always had to go home. For some ridiculous reason the lab had to close, they had to send everyone home once in awhile. It was awful, honestly, but it was life. Naus knew she couldn’t spend all of her time cooped up and working, not in the end. She had to go to a few classes still, ones for her secondary degree, and hang out with friends. Naus had to have a life outside of her work, right? Most normal people did, as far as she knew. And she was most certainly a normal person. Besides, she wanted to make everyone proud of her. She wanted to make a difference.

She had been lucky enough to find a room in a nice apartment, with certainly kind roommates. It was the life Naus always wanted, and it was incredible. She loved getting time to enjoy movies, cook meals, and more, without having to be all alone all the time. It was the best setup ever, honestly. And no matter how different they may have been, they all got along in the end. Was there really anything better? Not as far as the redhead was concerned. The apartment was a nice balance compared to her cubbyhole in the lab, where people were always moving in and out. Of course there were still plants here- her room was full of succulents and there were a few others little plants growing in the main room. Nothing dangerous, of course. Naus wasn’t trying to kill her roommates or any of their guests! She just wanted to keep nature close to her at all times, and she would always do it. If they had an issue with it, Naus was more than willing to move the plants, but it seemed as if it were fine and no one truly cared. They really brightened the place up, in the end.

Today the redhead was hard at work on… Something. She was playing with a few of her plants, trying to make the most incredible smell possible. Nausicaa had just recently learned about the idea of creating new candle scents or other things like that, and it sounded pretty fun. A great way to make a little bit of extra money, and a great way to make the apartment smell great. So it was a great idea, right? Easy… Only it wasn’t at all. Naus has close to no idea about what she was doing. The internet wasn’t helping, and so far she was just boiling some leaves while mixing others in a flask. That was good, maybe? A step in the right direction, at least. She was slowly figuring out where to put things and what to do. Sooner or later she’d have it all right.

Nausicaa hadn’t realized how much noise she was making until one of her dear roommates joined her in the kitchen in what appeared to be a half asleep state. She looked at the brown haired girl across from her, ”Trying to extract the scents from these plants so I can make a candle. Or potpourri. Something like that.” she mixed the flask again, ”Not really sure, honestly.”

dreamer, it's easy to lose yourself
in onward motion
"Plant extracts? Don't they make those oils, or what have you, for that sort of thing?" Rosemary rubbed her eyes blearily as she spoke, trying to wake herself up a bit more and hoping she could rub away the grumpiness that had accompanied being awakened from her nap. It wasn't Nausicaä's fault that she'd been asleep in the middle of the afternoon, after all. While all the ruckus her roommate was making wasn't exactly a normal level of sound, it certainly wasn't above and beyond what would be considered acceptable. Reasoning with herself mentally helped to assuage a bit of the irritation she had felt upon entering the kitchen. Now, the young woman leaned back in her seat with a much more relaxed air. Though she would have been embarrassed of it out in public, at the moment she cared little as she let out a long, yowling yawn. Taking a moment to stretch, she finally pushed herself to her feet. The effort to cross the kitchen to her electric kettle was almost enough to shake off the rest of the sleepiness that hung about her.

Piling the lengths of loose brown hair on top of her head and securing it with a hairband, she set about making herself a cup of tea. While she was filling up the kettle, she watched her friend work. Now that knew what Naus was about, it made it easier to recognize the strange scents that filled the kitchen. Not all of them were, in her opinion, all the pleasant and she couldn't help wrinkling her nose a bit. Switching the kettle on to heat, Rosemary slipped up onto the empty counter top beside it, openly watching Nausicaä now with a mixture of wariness and curiosity. "Candles or potpourri, hmm?" She mused, tilting her head. Rosemary was used to her roommate's peculiarities -- likely she had a few of her own and was no judge of such things -- but she couldn't help but worry. To be quite honest, Rosemary seemed naturally inclined to worry about most everything, especially in regards to the people she cared about. Not the sort of debilitating concern that accompanied anxiety, but little things like whether they were eating enough, had taken their umbrella that morning if the sky looked overcast, or whether or not they weren't getting in over their heads with something.

Currently it was the latter as Rosemary looked over everything her roommate was currently doing from her perch on the counter. Opening her mouth to question Naus further, she was interrupted by the whistling of the kettle. Biting back a sigh, Ros slipped off the counter top to remove the kettle from the heated base, relieved as the whistling slowly muted and died. As she was grabbed a mug and her stash of tea from the cabinet, she cast a look over her shoulder. "Would you like a cup since I'm making one?" She asked, her hands busy with the minutiae of tea-making. Pouring the steaming water, she was glad for having kept her worries to herself. Too often, she knew, she could be overbearing with her concerns and pragmatic attitude towards most everything. She wasn't the type to leave a task to lie for the next day or to keep her opinions to herself if she thought they would help -- and sometimes, even, when they most definitely didn't. After a moment, she couldn't help but posit dryly, however, on the state of the room around them. "I assume you aren't planning on turning the kitchen into a laboratory permanently."

electrified, we burn all night.

Nausicaa snorted, ”Well yeah I could buy the oils,” she paused, stirring the liquid in the pot, ”but where’s the fun in that? Plus getting them extracted yourself means they’re more natural.” the redhead nodded, ”Don’t need any weird chemicals, right? Not when I can make it even better myself.” the girl paused as she read something on her computer about what to do, ”At least, I think I can.” she shrugged, ”I promise to clean up whatever ridiculous mess I make.” sometimes she talked a little too much, but that was okay. She was just explaining every little thing that was going on in her life at this point in time, ”And hey, at least it smells pretty good so far!” Naus turned and unwrapped a thing of wax she bought. As much as she wanted to make everything herself, she knew she had to at least buy the wax. Waiting for that to be made would take far too long, and she wasn’t that patient. Pulling out another pot, she set it inside with a cup of water to start melting it. That was right, yeah? Hopefully. Every single set of instructions online seemed to be telling her a different way to do things.

So yes, maybe she hadn’t thought about her roommates needing to make breakfast, but it would be okay, wouldn’t it? Things would be cleaned up eventually, and they could at least eat lunch. Who needed breakfast anyway? Her stomach grumbled quietly. Oh well, it’d be fine. She had work to do! Sometimes Naus went hours without eating when she was at work- she simply found herself far more focused on getting things done that she forgot to take care of herself. ”Did you sleep well?” Naus asked in a moment of silence. It was kind to ask, after all. Kind to make sure her roommate was doing well- no need for either of them to be super sick or anything like it! Naus had plenty of things she could use her plants for, after all. And medicine was one of them, even if they weren’t the most normal ways of healing people up.

”Yeah, either or. Maybe both? I should have enough to make a few candles and a little bit of potpourri.” Naus nodded as she worked, ”I promise things will smell even better once I’ve boiled out the gross bits.” at least, that’s how it looked like things would be working. Who knew if it would actually work, in the end! Nausicaa looked at her roommate and nodded, ”Actually, yeah. That would be nice. Thanks Ros.” Naus smiled. Yeah, a drink would be good. And maybe it would make her stomach feel a little bit better in the middle of her crazy adventures. Sometimes she wasn’t sure how Rosemary put up with her, but hey, she was, and it was great to have a roommate who didn’t freak out when you were experimenting. It was just the life of a sciency person. ”Of course I’m not.” Naus said with a laugh, ”It’ll all be cleaned up. I’ll do my best to keep my experiments to your naps.” she grinned.

dreamer, it's easy to lose yourself
in onward motion
There were days, sometimes, very occasionally, that Rosemary wondered it would be like to live entirely on her own. She'd day dream about it. The peace and quiet of a little studio apartment with perhaps a window herb garden and a few potted (but hardy) shrubs to care for. A little crafting nook where she could wile away the hours undisturbed. And, of course, an endless supply of her favorite teas. Certainly, she had sometimes been described as a quiet, solitary creature -- so different from the vibrant people of San Francisco, to be sure -- and, as it happened, she enjoyed her own company. Preferred it, even, to many others. Rosemary wasn't afraid of silence; there were often plenty of things to fill the gaps left when there was no one to converse with. Nor did she fear her own, often tumbling, thoughts. She tended to categorize herself as an observer of the world if not always an enthusiastic participant in it. There was a certain kind of enjoyment to be had in watching people and wondering about them, if only privately.

For all of the above, Ros did not think she was actually meant to lead a solitary life. The times in which she was happiest, she'd found, was when she was with other people and embraced their sometimes chaotic, madcap selves for what they were. If that made her a foil, then so be it. She could be the calm or the strength, the champion or the giver, among so many other things for very little gave her the same satisfaction as helping someone she cared about. Even in such small capacities as a cup of tea or a hand with a project. Rosemary had watched her friend and roommate, both affection and amusement not the least bit disguised in her hazel-brown eyes, as she'd waited for the tea kettle to whistle. "I do suppose you're right," she conceded with a small sigh, though a small smile pulled at the corners of her mouth. The kitchen did indeed smell quite fragrant and not at all terrible, though Ros didn't bother confirming or denying Naus' statement. She was fairly certain the other young woman was well aware of the affect her oil extracting experiment was having on the apartment. Instead, she busied her self with the now two mugs of tea in front of her. "Sugar?" She inquired, reaching for the canister.

After spooning a teaspoon of the white substance into her own mug, she stirred it slowly, watching the granules dissolve. "As well as usual," she answered the question casually, a little too lightly perhaps, not entirely ready to talk about the effect her dreams had on her just yet despite how vividly she recalled them -- or how they made her heart ache with a homesickness she wasn't sure she had any right to feel. Pulling her lips back into a smile, she nodded towards the wax. "Candles of that scent would be lovely, I think," Ros offered before she chuckled. "We have a plan then. I'll sleep while you make your plant extracts." She paused, considering. "Though we should probably open a window or two lest the neighbors begin to think we've turned the place into a perfumery."

electrified, we burn all night.

If there was one thing that Nausicaa found amazing, it was the number of ways she could use so many plants she collected during her adventures. It seemed like each and every plant had ten thousand purposes- honestly, Nausicaa found it amazing. That was one of the reasons she found herself drawn towards working with them to try and help people, because she knew it was possible. She knew she’d be able to figure out what was going on, and maybe even find a new cure that no one had every thought of for some illness. Or maybe she’d just be able to figure out some new way to relieve pain. As long as she was helping, she was happy. It was pretty incredible, the number of ways plants hadn’t been looked at. Some of the toxins were incredibly interesting in the ways that they worked to keep the plant safe. Of course, she would never bring anything dangerous home with her. It wouldn’t be nice to leave something out where Rosemary would be hurt- Naus definitely didn’t want to get into any sort of trouble.

Potpourri, though? That was far from dangerous. It was just a little something to brighten the place up, make it smell good. Why waste money on candles and the likes when Naus could figure out how to do it all on her own? Maybe she could even make some money off of selling any extras, or scents that worked out incredibly well. Sure, working at the lab paid okay, but it wasn’t the best by any means. Even with the stipend, she still struggled from time to time- especially if she wanted to spend any money on herself. It paid to be frugal, and it paid to sell your skills. ”If it works out, we can even start our own business! I promise this place will be sparkling clean by the time I’m done, seriously.” Naus crossed her finger over her chest, ”Cross my heart.” she smiled as she continued her work. There was something nice about having a roommate, someone to chat with when you needed it. And someone to make you tea when you were busy with other things, too.

Naus stirred the leaves, watching as they became more and more limp. A bit silly to see, but a step in the right direction. Any minute now and they’d be done. Then what? Remove the leaves, put the scented water in a bottle and wait for it to cool? That seemed simple enough, as long as she was patient. No need to make any errors. The redhead nodded, ”Just a little bit of sugar, though.” too sweet and it just wouldn’t be good- much like this oil experiment. Naus looked at her roommate for a moment as she touched on her naps- the redhead only wished she could sleep that often, but she often found herself far too distracted to do such a thing. There was too much to do and just not enough time. ”Candles it is. And a little bit for potpourri.” she glanced at her laptop. Exactly how would this transfer to candles, again? Something about wax, which she had plenty of, but it was definitely an odd part. ”Perfect.” she laughed, ”Maybe? Don’t want them to think we’re covering anything up. No weird secrets here.” her laughter continued. Naus stayed far away from drugs- except the kinds she worked with, ”Would they really complain though? This smells good, at least.”

dreamer, it's easy to lose yourself
in onward motion
"What a grand idea," Rosemary responded noncommittally, turning her face away to hide the smile blooming across her face and the amusement she knew was obvious in her gaze. That amusement, she was certain, was quickly overtaking her expression. Not out of any disbelief in her roommate's plan, of course. Indeed, she only turned away for fear that Naus would take it thusly. In reality, she thought it a rather courageous think to be so assertive with one's dreams. The young woman enjoyed her roommate's enthusiasm and it was rather infectious. The conversation over the last few minutes had successfully shaken the doldrums that had seemed to weigh her down since waking from her nap. Even without the tea she was preparing, and very much still desired, she felt alert and invested. Ros supposed it was only natural when someone like Nausicaä spoke so passionately and put so much of themselves into something.

There was a part of her that was almost a little bit jealous of her friend for it. Everyone in her life seemed to have something to funnel their time and energy into, something they loved and were excited about. Lucille had her company and her philanthropy. Naus had her plants, of course. Helen had her patients, whom Ros knew from experience took a lot of the older woman's time. But what did she have? She enjoyed her job -- Lucy was nothing if not a fun employer even if she kept her on her toes most of the time. She loved the little things about her life: going to the open air markets, the fresh flowers and seemingly endless sunshine of California. Her independence, for sure. But did she really have anything she could call her own? Her thing? Perhaps she ought to find that out. It would certainly serve her better to spend her free time going out and trying new things rather than sleeping in hopes of dreaming up something more solid than romantic dreamscapes that left her heart aching.

Smothering a sigh, Rosemary tipped a little sugar into her roommate's tee and gave it a stir before setting the mug within the other young woman's reach. Taking up her own (heavily plied with milk and more sugar than she would admit to if pressed), she sat back at the table. Drawing her knees up, she balanced her feet against the edge of the chair and let the steam from the tea warm her face. She considered a moment before responding. "I don't truly think they would but," she gave a little shrug. "People can be strange." With that, the fell quiet. There had been something else that had been niggling at the back of her mind. It was sometimes difficult to get her roommates together, their schedules often conflicting, but it needed to be discussed sooner rather than later. "Naus," she began, taking a deep breath. "What do you think of another person coming to live with us?"

electrified, we burn all night.

Maybe her experiments were a bit odd, but that was just how Naus liked them. She wanted to experience everything she possibly could, and she wanted to create some amazing new things. With time these could become things to sell to make a bit of extra cash on the side, as things could get tight at time. Nausicaa knew she was lucky to get paid by the grad lab she was working with, seeing as so many of her friends weren’t making anything at all. And how was that fair? Really, it wasn’t, but she couldn’t do anything about it. She just had to keep surviving off of what she had, no matter what that meant. Living with someone as kind as Rosemary was great, as she was always there to help Naus figure out a tight budget or what to change up. The pair of them really lived well together, something they were really lucky to have.

”Thanks.” Nausicaa grinned. It was silly, yeah, but it was still fun. A sort of pipe dream, one might call it. A way to let herself be free and still be herself. Honestly, Naus wanted it to work. She wanted to be able to run her own business and do science and just live her dream life, but that seemed to be a bit of a challenge. It was still a few years away, or more, but that didn’t mean she would give up. She would keep on going strong with whatever sounded best to her. Many would call Nausicaa a bit too headstrong, but that certainly didn’t stop her. Why would it? The opinions of others only mattered if it had to do with her ten million science experiments. After all, she wanted to get her papers published one day. She couldn’t give us as easily as others.

Nausicaa nodded at Ros’s words. It was true- people were incredibly strange. That was certainly one of the reasons she liked plants more, most of the time. Plants didn’t change their minds because the wind blew the wrong direction, or because they didn’t sleep well. Plants were simple. Not to say that the redhead didn’t enjoy people- she loved the friends she had made through school and everything else. Things were great and just falling into place. Turning the heat down, Nausicaa paused. Now what was next? Lid on and simmer, she thought. Just a moment in her thoughts, however, as Rosemary spoke once again. A roommate? The redhead had pondered something like that once or twice… But she hasn’t expected the conversation to come up, not really. ”I wouldn’t mind.” she spoke, ”It would make things more affordable… We just have to find the perfect person.” after all, she and Ros were very particular. They didn’t need some insane party girl moving in, now did they?
