MY COURAGE
my sword and shield
It physically pained him to leave Maire alone in that world. To leave her alone anywhere. He'll admit that perhaps he'd grown a little over protective since they'd left the tower...but things were different now. She didn't have to be a constant presence, they didn't need to spend every waking hour together. It wasn't two souls trapped in a tower by circumstance. Now she had a life of her own and so did he. Whether either of them liked it or not. And truthfully the real issue was that he needed to be in the animated world far more than she could ever safely cross. He'd gotten somewhat used to being in the body of a man, but it wasn't the same. Far too small, too cramped. The nights he didn't spend worrying about her, he worried about the flame in his chest. Laying in bed and staring up at the ceiling trying to somehow diagnose his own rapid heart rate. You'd think he'd have the answers, but it wasn't like things like this happened to dragons. Turning into man was a taboo. Possible but hardly ever done and if forced only for as short an amount of time as possible.

The portal had kind of fucked everything up. And as much as he would have loved to never cross it again, he did it for her. His job had morphed somewhere along the way from guarding a prisoner to protection and this was the safest course of action for her. Even if he was miserable.

Claws raking against stone, he climbed up the side of a precariously standing tower. He could feel it shifting and wavering beneath his weight: so tall and half crumbling that the winds made it dance like a reed with each strong gust. Somehow it managed to hold him as he reached its summit and perched on what was left of a stone dome. Then again he'd shrunk down just a bit. He'd felt anxious too tight and constricted when he'd crossed, but now he felt almost entirely free of those sensations. The fire in his chest was steady and strong. There was no ghost sensation of wings forever pressed tight against his back; instead they stretched out into the sky. So wide that he felt them protest at the effort. His body didn't feel small or pressed too tightly into a small space. Not that living over there wasn't unbearable, uncomfortable yes, and some days it got just a bit overwhelming, but he could survive. He was a dragon and dragons were a proud species. If being in a human body for most of his time was what was needed of him, then so be it. That's exactly what he'd do. His trips across the portal weren't that frequent but they helped ease things when it got to be too much and he needed a break.

If there was danger here, he never felt threatened by it. At least not when he was alone like this. Perhaps he was cocky, but most of the small beasts the darkness released tended to avoid him. As far as its twisted dragons were concerned, he'd yet to find any that were bigger then him...and though fearsome and violent they were far from true dragons. Creatures tainted by darkness and easy to pull apart with claws or teeth.

At first, that's what he thought the other might have been. After all the only untainted dragons he's seen are the ones used by the resistance fighters. So smelling another dragon, and one so heavily coated in magic, made his body hunch down the slightest bit on his tower. Tail curling around the crumbling stone, his head tilted and he sniffed at the air again just to be sure. Nostrils flaring and jaws opening to let sparks crackle between his teeth. "If you have half a mind, you'd come out." Heat radiated from his scales, the fire in his chest growing more intense and making the air around him flicker in waves.

She saw the world as a system of patterns which could be understood and manipulated to one's advantage. For what felt like the hundredth time, the sorceress found herself transplanted into the desiccated forest. How uncommon for a magical portal with access to infinite dimensions to deposit her consciousness to that damned pile of rocks not once, not twice, but rather over the course of dozens of crossings. It had its advantages and disadvantages, but ultimately the chord of boredom landed most coherently in her cortices.

She snarled, naked and shaking upon a blanket of dusty earth. Immediately she could smell the dilapidated ruin, unnatural vision blurring the details of her surroundings. The trees were blurs of purple amidst a darker background. Her mint-tinged body was paralyzed for a few minutes longer, pulsing and writhing as her full magnificence returned to her. Groaning at the exquisite, nonpareil pain, the beast panted and dug her sharp fingers beneath her. Saliva dripped from her mouth; she occasionally purged after landing. Luckily her stomach was empty on that particular gloomy afternoon. Gagging while spitting the taste of blood and bile, her legs budged at last. Crawling into the fetal position, the motion helped the magic's strength pump into her extremities. After a brief pause, her knees lifted to the sky. Her hips straightened, shoulders squaring gracefully as her cloak materialized around her, covering her nakedness.

Tongue trailing over her enamel, Maleficent clicked her tongue to feel the tingle. The lands were dead, and the wind was mostly gone. Even so, the practiced witch could sense something else nearby. Something big. A plaything? Bolting forward, she darted through the forest with the silent feet of a child raised with the earth beneath her toes. At the castle's perimeter, the Goliath of a lizard was easily visible. He knew she was near; the green woman grinned maniacally, golden eyes flashing with new hunger. With a hiss of release, her signature lavender cloud materialized as the seams of her body ruptured. Cranium breaking from her shoulders, it shot forward as her neck lengthened into thick, colorless scales. Muscular onyx arms burst through her weak human limbs, a tail bursting from her back as it lengthened. Spikes piercing her back in quick succession, the evil abomination raised her jaws to the sky and breathed. A pair of leathery wings flexed. Her dragon form (though admittedly underused) made her reckless. The larger her form, the more chaos writhed beneath her skin. Her reptilian tongue lashed. This would be a bit of fun.

His booming warning came just as she reared up on her hind legs, distorted laughter greeting him in echoes. "Well, well, well...." She cooed like a lullaby. Pressing against the cracking ground, she launched her hulking mass into the air, flapping and gaining altitude. The black dragon rose above the wall, then the smaller buildings in circles. Aurous eyes flashing in spite of the cloudy absence of sunlight, the witch took in the full breadth of this new discovery. Though it was clear from his capacity for speech, he wasn't a corruption as she had primarily assumed. He was gorgeous. His scales shone with rich detail, figure simultaneously, dichotomously worn and perfect. Her imitation was real but not enduring. She was intrigued. She was jealous.

Swimming through the air with ease, she circled the high tower, clucking with amusement as she at last propelled herself to eye-level with the other. With only ten feet of buffer between their jaws, Maleficent was willfully bold. "Hello, handsome," she croaked with a hiss. "Here I am," she announced with a flourish of her barbed tail. "But I mustn't steal the show, hmm?" Bubbling with anticipatory vibrance, she did an impromptu somersault to stretch her muscles. "Tell me, for what, precisely, does a creature so lovely leave their hoard?" A short trail of smoke trailed from the corners of her wide maw. "It couldn't be to... misbehave, now, could it?" She stressed the word with false astonishment. A roar of grating laughter followed her suggestion. The pitch-and-plum creature was enamored of this genuine mirror-image. Evil wanted entertainment, and oh, had she uncovered it.

For a moment, brief as it might have been, Alex was stunned. It had been so long since he'd seen another dragon, much less one that actually spoke. His experience so far in this world had been rather lackluster and disheartening. Almost to the point where he's begun to wonder if he was the last. Perhaps not of all dragons as he's killed plenty of the darkness' tainted beasts, and seen the small dragons of the resistance from a distance. But he's begun to doubt the continued existence of his own species. Their numbers hadn't been so small that he should have felt concerned, but nonetheless. How long had it been since he'd seen any of the hatchlings from his own rookery? Or the dragon mothers that had raised him and the others? The males of his species were prone to spending their centuries in increasing solitude, only congregating when it was mating season or when a particularly difficult issue required a gathering. The last dragon he'd seen was well before he'd ever had the misfortune of meeting the wizard who'd tricked him. It wasn't until after the darkness felt that he'd even bothered to try and find the others. He's spent enough time weaving in and out of the clouds, exploring mountain tops that seemed almost familiar. Yet at every turn the dragons he'd known in his life; some who'd grown as big as mountains themselves, old enough to have emerged from the first bubbling of magma from the earth. Seemed to be gone. Even the nest he'd come from was empty and abandoned. A network of caves meeting in a large cavern that was littered with the cracked eggshells of the last brood. A bad sign since he was certain there should have been hatchlings this time of year, in fact he'd been surprised to have reached the caves at all. It was rare for the female dragons to let even one of their former young come so close.

The idea that he might be alone left a sour, almost acidic taste in his mouth. He had Maire of course, but there was still that dragon pride. He might have sought out his own loneliness but it had always been with the knowledge that there were others of his kind out there. Dragons who spoke as he did, who understood the importance of names, and the power of the flames in their chest. In fact he was almost desperate to find one, anyone. Who might explain to him things even he didn't know or understand. For one brief moment his hope might have even fooled him into believing that the dragon before him now what if not the same, at least similar to him. Even if he'd rather kill his own kind then let them know about Maire, much like he was sure any of the dragons would kill him for coming close to their treasures. He was oddly thankful that she wasn't here, that she couldn't cross this far away from the portal. He'd hate to think what would happen if she was here right now. He likely wouldn't have called out to this stranger, and if they'd come anyway...well.

She was bold. He'd give her that much. The voice that slipped from those jaws had a sultry ring to it, the kind of voice that drew you in but didn't leave much room for trust. At least not as far as he was concerned. There was also something...off about her. Now that she was close, flying so close, he could smell magic. Not dragon magic, not like his.

It put him on edge. The tail he'd wrapped around the tower tightened its hold, stones and mortar crumbling and cracking beneath the pressure. This old castle had perhaps been built to last but that was well before the darkness came, and certainly not to be sat on by a dragon. After a moment his own wings stretched, and he pushed down on the stone perch, thrusting himself into the sky and collapsing the building he'd been standing on in a shower of rubble and dust. He seemed to grow as he did, size shifting back to something closer to normal now that he didn't need to worry about crushing his would-be perch beneath his weight. A snort, at the compliment, ignoring the spark of dragonesque pride that made his head tilt up the slightest bit. "Certainly, what other reason could there be but to gather more?" He might not trust her, but he could play along at least. Even if he had no hoard to speak of, nor any interest in the useless trinkets and bobbles humans and others of his kind so anxiously coveted. Steam leaking from his jaws in slender wisps. A huff of breath causing sparks to flash between his teeth.

"Tell me, you wouldn't happen to have any trinkets you're willing to part with?" His head tilted "I imagine someone who can copy my kind so...elegantly, would have all sorts of fine treasures." Funny how even the word treasure makes a flash of red hair blink at the back of his mind. Even as he thought back to all the things he'd tried to collect. All the treasures he'd gathered because it was what his kind normally collected; gold, gems, and flashing silver. He'd collected armor from knights and swords and daggers from across the land. Each time abandoning his hoard in search of something else, anything else. None of those things had held his attention or mattered in the long run, and they mattered even less now, but he'd rather play the role then bristle defensively.

Sallow eyes flashed, following his movements as the black giant circled. Like an ancient vulture she swooped along the circular rim of the tower, clicking her fangs enthusiastically as his tail crushed against the stone. She was making him nervous. How wonderful. The dragon sorceress did not fear death or harm in this dimension, under the spell of the power she wielded. It was possible that the dark forces she'd conjured ages ago now possessed her body like a puppet, tugging the strings to make her lips dance. Maleficent did not know caution here, emboldened by her manifold abilities and drunk on the promise of carnage, destruction. Mortal senses could scarcely hold a match to the effervescence of her unmasked form. They drove her with refreshing clarity. Here, she knew what she wanted and liked. And the brutal woman listened.

With a rumble and a groan, the deteriorating cylinder collapsed into itself. Dust rushed up through the sudden vacuum, coating the ebony-scaled beast in a plume of fine dirt. She laughed heartily, half-roar, half-human chuckle. She angled her glide and dodged an oven-sized boulder, flapping her way upward to continue flanking the golden lizard. Her slim head craned forward, absorbing the sound of his reptilian voice and the sparks of irritation fluttering from behind rows of white teeth. She was delighted by the discovery. Never had she admired a mythological beast of this size herself, merely through tomes and second-hand reports. Queries regarding his strength, agility, and magical potential rifled through her rapid-fire brain, her thin tongue lashing against the wind. The witch was over the moon. Now that I've found you, I'll never let you go, she thought teasingly, giddy.

"How in-ter-est-ing..." She drawled with the same blend of honey and mania. "Conssssssidering how providential 'tis to find anything of value here," she mused innocently. Her shoulders rolled as her wingspan urged her higher, rising face-to-face with her handsome counterpart. "Oh yesssss," she hissed quietly, gazing into his intelligent face with intrigue. So he could see past her disguise? Marvelous. The creature was undeterred. "I possess many treasures," she crowed proudly. She did a loop-de-loop in place, bubbling with fits of freakish laughter. "I have much to offer. You need only to name it," the queen tempted, "and it is yours." The high-pitched vibrato of her words dropped down to an even-keeled alto. "Don't be coy, you may even whisper in my ear." The curves of her mouth curled into a satisfied smile. "What are you missing?" She continued to flex, rising higher into the grey sky. The castle was shrinking beneath as she rolled about, remaining fixated on her newfound boon.

He had to remember that while he was alone, he couldn't be reckless. Caution might not have been his go-to persona, but he did have someone waiting for him back home. To die a pointless and avoidable death was not high on his list of priorities. Nor did he want to fall into some trap...again. His first experience with non-dragon magic had gone south to say the least. Though the end result had brought him a friendship he cherished, it hadn't lessened the sting of his wounded pride. Dragons were not the sort to let slights go easily, and the wizard who'd tricked him had also cursed the girl he'd sworn to protect. Her magic might not have felt the same, or left the same sour tinge to the air...but that innate distrust still lingered. Even more so considering that she felt dark, and the slippery sweet tone of her voice made him uneasy. He half wondered if playing this game was worth the trouble. Yet he felt trying to shake her off now and fly his own way wouldn't get him very far. He'd sparked her interest, he could see that much ( and she'd sparked his in a sense ) and he couldn't help but sense that she wasn't the type to let interesting things go.

Wings beating at the air, he hovered in place and simply watched the other beast as she twirled and dipped through the sky. Reminded of when he'd been little more than a hatchling himself; playing with his nest mates in the open air above the caves. Weaving through mountain peaks while the mothers watched on from where they basked in the sunlight streaming through the clouds. It was an oddly personal and innocent flash of memory to have, startling in its simplicity and made to look all that more innocent in the wake of her twisted laughter.

"I suppose this place has been picked clean." His own gaze drifted down for the briefest moment, watching the last of the dust settle on the rubble he'd caused. Even if there had been some store of value hidden beneath the tower he wouldn't have cared for it. Golden trinkets held about as much of his attention as ants crawling about the earth. Spell books on the other hand...or magical items he might be able to use to help Maire? These things were of value, and when his attention returned to the dragon before him there was something like consideration shining in his ember flecked eyes. She was a magic user, and a powerful one at that...the idea of asking her played absently in the back of his mind. The temptation of taking up that offer making his tail whip through the air fast enough to make noise.

It was his innate distrust that made him roll slightly to the side, "Such a tempting offer." His own voice was a low rumble, the sound of rocks shifting beneath the earth. "I wonder how many poor souls fall into that trap?" Though his eyes narrowed and his words might have stung, there was nothing but amusement in his tone. No threat, or offers of violence- she'd done nothing to him yet and he wasn't about to go starting fights. "Tell me...what would the price be for a favor from one such as yourself? I imagine it wouldn't come cheap..." His head ticked to the side, smoke curling up from between his jaws.

Untamed and unbound, the mass of magical energy could sense two things over all else: potential and fear. The sorceress wanted for nothing in her cushy self-made palace-beyond-the-portal. She could possess any item, and most people. Her smallest whim was attended to with barely a flick of her fingers. Boring, dull stuff. Scheming with her politically-precarious husband was all well and good, but where was the old-fashioned dirt? Where was the sex, the murder? Everything effective in those soft, modern times consisted of paperwork and video tapes. It curled the woman's toes. Human society used to be positively profound regarding the litany of torture methods they crafted. A different wound for every different sin, manners of death ascribed with such care; it was almost tender. She craved the thrill of movement, the rush of blood both inside and without. Her deformed mind ached for it.

Another peal of raucous laughter floated from her fangs, black tongue flickering between her lips. She smelled the tension between them as plain as she could see the debris below; thick and threatening. He clearly didn't yearn for a fight the way she did, and it maddened her, enchanted her, seduced her. Apparently he was a smart thing. He knew not to make himself such simple prey. He sensed her darkness. All the more fun for her. Her teeth clacked together, clicking small tsk's as she continued to circle; she the vulture, he a savory snack. "My dear creature," she said, her laughs darkening to a low chuckle. "There are no traps to be found within bargains," she corrected. "Merely, perchance..." She paused, leathered wings calming as her altitude dropped. She gazed upwards at him from below, lime eyes flashing. "...Unforessssssseen consequences."

The slippery serpent quieted. Her new friend hadn't dropped the subject. How intriguing. Her thick ivory tail contracted like a telephone wire, face stretching wide with a feral smile. There was something he wanted after all. She was undisguised, presented to him in demonic semblance, and yet still he persisted. Whatever it was he wished, it was a desperate longing indeed. Smoke tendrils rose anew from her nostrils. She ceased her circling, slowing to a steady hover. Neck rising to his level, Maleficent stared directly into his golden-warm eyes. It was both a challenge and an intrusion, an earnest and expressive intimacy to the prolonged contact. "Such a deal is not cheaply made," she acknowledged, humor gone from her tone. The witch peppered truths in between lies, nuanced in her manipulation. "Of course, one cannot place a price upon a nameless object," she said matter-of-factly, slowly gliding over his shoulder. Maleficent flapped herself down to the dining hall's main roof. Sheets of slate slipped from under her thick-scaled stomach as she landed upon the eaves, gripping at the apex with taloned arms. With a twinge of disinterest, she passed a fleeting look back to the male.

"'Tisssss your choice," she concluded with a shrug, adjusting to a comfortable position on her haunches. She had his scent now, knew the sight and feel of his presence. Maleficent was playing a long game; whatever his answer, her chest broiled with fiery enthusiasm.
