Now this was a dream come true.

For months, years even, May had dreaded crossing the portal. Standing at only a few inches tall, there really was nothing enjoyable about it at all. She could see nothing, do nothing, feel nothing. Half the time she just stood by the portal for a while, hiding behind some rocks, until it returned and she could cross again. The only times she really went any further were always met with danger and terror- normally with Nod by her side. They would get attacked, and yes they would make it away… But where was the fun in stumbling over the roots of trees? Ones that would never give her any trouble if she were a human sized human again? It was incredibly frustrating. May wanted to be able to swim in the water, or play in the sand, or experience the encampment as a human, not as someone too small to do anything. No matter what she didn’t move fast enough.

Then there were the times she crossed and got lost. Those didn’t happen all that often… But they did at times. It was far easier to get lost when you were so small, when the portal fell out of view so easily. Plus May wasn’t always the best at directions, only adding to her confusion. Then there was the time she was attacked by a ladybug… Yeah, it wasn’t that great. She did not have the best track record of going into the other world, not at all.

Enter Katya.

It was a bit of a joke, at first- “gingers have to stick together!”- but soon enough it became a reality. They were friends, both girls from other worlds just trying to fit in. And both with silly boys in the pasts as well- only May had managed to find hers already. When Katya first offered to go to the other world with May she had to turn her down. How on earth did she explain being only a few inches tall? Embarrassing, really. But she did it. And somehow, for one reason or another, Katya was still interested in going.

So they would.

May stood by the bridge to cross over, waiting for her friend to arrive. It wouldn’t be that bad, would it?

As much as she liked working as a waitress, it wasn’t always enough to pay the bills.

Well, it was, but it just wasn’t enough to keep her entertained. No matter how hard May worked, she just wasn’t cut out for such a job. Sometimes she stumbled over her own two feet, spilling a little water, or sometimes she just messed up an order or two. She never spilled on a customer, of course, nor did she ever make any huge errors- but it was enough to not give her all that many hours. Not that they had that many to begin with. Everyone was always doing their best, yes, but so many people worked at the restaurant that no one really worked all that much. It wasn’t something that bothered May too much, not at first, but as time went on… She needed a bit more money. With Nolan constantly working on his bike, and racing, she had plenty of things she wanted to go to, but not nearly the money to afford them all. Not to mention her puppy!

Ozzie Jr was certainly the love of her life. He reminded her so much of the pug she loved back home, only this one was a little less broken. She had to take care of him- buying him food, treats, toys… He was the one thing that kept her sane, even more so than Nolan did. Besides, that boy was half her problems some of the time. She didn’t know why she was friends with him, but there she was. Still keeping an eye on him no matter what he was getting himself into. At least it wasn’t jail time- she wasn’t sure how she would deal with something like that. He always did have an issue with authority.

May never thought she would find herself reading a newspaper, but there she was. Sitting on her couch. Doing just that. It was a suggestion she had heard in passing- sometimes people put odd job offers in the paper. Maybe she’d be able to find something a bit extra to do with her time? She needed a little more money, she needed to work a few extra hours. Surely she could do something that wouldn’t be all that challenging? It really sounded like a good plan. The redhead just had to find a fitting job first.

There weren’t too many listed, not really. Dog walker, nude model… Assistant? That was something, maybe, she could do. Dressing up a little nicer than normal, May tied up her tennis shoes and followed the directions on the paper to the location of this fashion place. Not exactly her cup of tea… But she was desperate, and she did not want to become a nude model. She opened the door slowly, stepping inside and clearing her throat, ”Um, hello? Is anyone here?”

May hated bugs almost as much as she hated crossing into this world. Yes, of course bugs weren’t that bad (most of the time), but some of them were just a bit too icky for her. A bit too squishy, a bit too creepy looking. Her fear wasn’t helped by the fact that, for a short period of time (and whenever she crossed the arch), she was as tall as most of them! That made most things far more dangerous, and far more scary. Ants were no longer creatures that her father used to look at under microscopes as they created tunnels, they were giants. Bees stingers were as long as her arms… Yeah, this was not the world May wanted to live in. She had absolutely no idea how the Leaf People survived with so many creepy crawlies all around them, constantly encroaching on their lands. She couldn’t have even imagined running into a spider! So far, however, she had been safe. No giant eight-legged creatures were coming after her- at least not yet! May never knew what was lurking around the next corner, she never knew where something was hidden. Being small meant there were many new places for things to hide, places that she never really worried about before.

But she never did have the best of luck, did she?

This time, however, she refused to cross the portal alone. The boy who made her laugh, kept her sassy, and occasionally caused the butterflies to flutter around her stomach was right by her side. She absolutely would not go without him, not after all of the danger she had been forced to suffer through on her own. Nolan was actually good at fighting, he was good at running, and he was good at keeping them safe. Which was, of course, something May was ultimately terrible at. She tried her best, she always did, but she always ended up getting hurt, or running into more danger. Things were never safe in this world, not for someone only a few inches tall. It was almost as if people wanted to make things harder for her than they already were!

She took a few steps forward and looked around the area they were now in. It was a city for normal sized people, and a complete colossal tower for her at her current height. Perhaps the city would not have been so terrifying if she were taller and actually able to escape things, but at her current size she couldn’t do much at all. She could just stay by Nod’s side and hope things turned out alright, ”Okay, we’re here. When can we go?” she rubbed her upper arms, ”It’s cold.” and May just wanted to go Christmas shopping. She had people to gift, after all, and things to do! Keeping her memories was a priority, yes, but couldn’t they wait just a few days more? Something just felt off about the entire city, although she couldn’t quite place her finger on it, ”Are we looking for anything important, or just danger?”

Why me?

There was only one through running through May’s mind as she ran through the trees. Well, the roots of the trees, the bottom branches of the leaves. Standing at only a few inches tall, almost everything was deadly to her. It was hot- too hot- yet she had to keep on running, wiping the sweat off her forehead as she moved. Why did things always have to go after her? Why could she not have a normal time in this world?

This was not even the darkness going after her. This was something worse.

A lady bug.

Cute, normally, but when they were almost larger than you? It was terrifying. She was going to get killed, eaten by a freaking lady bug! There was no way to survive something like this. She could run as much as she wanted, but it would still be after her. May wasn’t used to running, she wasn’t all that coordinated either. That’s how she had let Ozzie out and gotten into this whole mess from the start… It was ridiculous. And now she’d never get to see that dumb dog again. She’d never seen anyone again.

May slid down one of the roots and hid under it. Maybe the bug wouldn’t find her here? She was worried, for a moment, that it was part of the darkness. Even if it was just a normal one… It was after her. Why was she even so terrified of this thing? Did they even hunt humans? The redhead had no idea, but she definitely didn’t trust it. Not with it’s large face, and weird fang-like appendages… Yeah, this wasn’t a good time. Mentally, she made a note to never come to this world alone ever again, if she survived. She wanted this thing gone, whether it was darkness or not. May was only going to be in this world with a friend by her side, namely Nolan. He was always getting into trouble, of course, but he was better than most. He listened to her (sometimes) and didn’t do incredibly dumb things (sometimes). Mostly, he just kept her safe. He’d be able to fight, he’d be able to scare whatever was after her away.

May heard the slight buzzing sound of the ladybug again and took off running. Why her? Why now? Every time she went out, something or someone was after her. What ever happened to a nice relaxing time across the portal? Was it impossible? It felt like it.

She screamed as the bug flew over her head, changing her path to angle slightly. No way was it gonna take her down easily, not if she could help it!

May Kimberly Bogan simply didn’t enjoy the animated side of the Portal, what more could be said? She hated the creepy-crawlies, the dark beasts, and so much more. Of course, nothing made it worse than being just a few inches tall. What on earth was she supposed to do at that height? If she stood at her normal 5’3” tall height she would have been off adventuring in the dangerous world, playing with little creatures and exploring. While May didn’t exactly brag about being like her father, she couldn’t deny that a bit of her lined up with him. Even if he hadn’t been around to raise her much, he still taught her to question everything and learn as much as she could about her surroundings. He probably hadn’t planned on her finding his mysterious ‘little people in the forest’, much less her actually, almost, becoming one. Yet here she was, stuck in some unfortunate circumstances.

Because of this circumstances, May chose to stay close to the Portal. She always wanted to have an escape plan, just in case. From what she understood the darkness didn’t ever really get close to the Portal, but there was no way she was risking it. She was small, and not very quick. If the darkness appeared out of nowhere, she knew she’d be in trouble, and quick. There would be too much to deal with, and she’d… Well, she’d probably die. So sticking to the Portal it was! One of the few- very few- positives of her current height was definitely the fact that a small area to ‘normal’ her was huge for ‘little’ her. The mountains were scary and rough, yes, but they were better than nothing. She had to cross to remember her very odd memories, and simply crossing was far too boring for the poor soul.

With a new job all lined up and in place, she had been busier than before. It seemed as if her hours at the grocery store had, more or less, been controlled by certain staff members who seemed to hate her for no apparent reason. Whatever. Being a waitress would be a little bit easier, and she still had a few other interviews to go to for even crazier positions. Hopefully she’d be able to make enough just as a waitress… But she never knew. At least she had Nod back in her life, even if he was still a complete speed demon with a lack of care for those in charge. Maybe she should have waited for him to want to cross with her? Then each and every sound wouldn’t have been as terrifying as before.

In her exploration, May often got a bit lost in her thoughts as she tried to process everything. Bugs were as large as her, and she still hadn’t got that through her thoughts. How was it even possible? They were terrifying at her normal size, and even more so when they were a bit bigger! It just wasn’t fair- why did she have to get picked to hold the pod? Anyone but her would have been very, very nice. In fact, her father would have been perfect for the job!
