This was stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The thunder cracked overhead and he swore by Odin himself that he would take this up with that Smith fellow when they got back. A flash of lighting illuminated his surroundings and he felt his heart jump into this throat and he swallowed with some difficulty. Oh, it would be a good training exercise. To get a feel for how well he'd do in the field. Hiccup wasn't that impressed. It was more or less a throw them into the deep exercise to see if he sank or swam.

As a Viking, he could appreciate that. As a person, he was annoyed.

"Astrid!" As soon as the words left his mouth, the thunder overhead stole them away. Perfect. This evening was going great. Find his girl. Go on a daring adventure. Get lost. It was what he always imagined. How couldn't he be exhuberant?

Sliding down the hillside, he caught a tree and stopped himself, green eyes staring out over the plains below. There wasn't anything out there to fight which just solidified the thought that this was a resistance test. Survive one night in the Darkness infested land and you can come back! You'll be fine. You've already lost your leg! "Oh, haha, pick on the guy with one leg. So original."

If he hadn't been waxing poetical, he probably would've heard the thing coming up behind him. Sure, he didn't fight dragons, but he was a warrior. (Sort of. Astrid was better.) It wasn't until he felt the push from behind and he was sliding down the landscape again that he realized something was wrong.

His shoulder hit a scraggly tree, and he hissed at the pain that immediately blossomed even as he immediately reached for the sword at his side. It wasn't his dragon's breath sword, but one he had managed to steal from Berk before it fell. Authentic. Actual Viking hardware. The sound of metal scraping against metal hit his ears and with a haphazard swipe, he managed to hit what was attacking and it scampered away with a loud squeal.

"Point one for Hiccup on not dying," he muttered to lean up against the tree with a slight groan. Definitely going to bruise. Heh. Least it was a battle wound.

Now, where was Astrid?

Now, believe me when I tell you this, but Vikings can be hard to swallow. I know, shocker, right? Vikings? Big and burly and eager to fight? Who knew! I ... I am a Viking. I am a Viking, and being here does not change that.

My name is Hiccup Haddock, and I am from Berk.

Where's Berk? Ah, well, it's a big rock in the middle of the ocean. I tried to find it on a map, but it seems to... not exist here. I don't know if I find that depressing or reassuring, really. It does kind of make you question your own reality doesn't it? 'Oh look, this place you've called home from for decades doesn't really exist! Do you exist?'

Oh god, I think I'm having an existential crisis.

ANYWAY. Point is? I'm not from around here. I'm from Berk, and we have dragons.

I know, dragons right? Mythical beings that swoop around scooping up maidens and eating sheep----I've read the books. And for the most part, that's true, only less maiden stealing and more sheep eating. And building wrecking... and leg eating. Oh! And hand eating! All of that. Only... That wasn't quite true.

I was a terrible viking. Small, scrawny, and always in the way. Plus, I never really got the hang of sword swinging or axe throwing. I was good at creating, though... Mostly. Everyone fails before they succeed and one night? One night I did. I actually hit a dragon. And in that moment, the entire world changed.

I found the dragon. A night fury. Oh man... they were the most mysterious of all the dragons we knew of. And I hit one. I was finally a Viking. Or, so I thought. Could've landed a killing blow. Got the love and respect of the entire village of Berk. ----Got the girl... but I couldn't. He looked at me and I looked back and there was something there. Something I couldn't bear to destroy. I saw myself. And that's when I knew.

We weren't meant to destroy... were we, bud?

)||( THE DRAGON TAMER .

The dragon and I... well, we didn't get along too well to begin with. It took days, and days, and days for him to even regard me with a non-lethal glance. Meanwhile, I was thrown into dragon training back at home, and... it wasn't going so well. On either front. Until I started to notice some odd things. Things that gave me an edge. We didn't have to kill them. They weren't blood thirty killers. Toothless was teaching me that... and---

Toothless? Yeah. He has retractable teeth. It's preeetty cool. But don't let him hear you say that. His head is big enough. [ A LAUGH. ] Point is, I learned a lot while watching him in that ravine. Why didn't he fly away? Ah, well... that's my fault. When I hit him with my contraption, I crippled his tail. He can't fly without that missing part. So, he was trapped in that ravine for... days. I mean, he wasn't like... unhappy-ish. He had food. And it was a big ravine man. Don't get any ideas. Eventually, though, he started to trust me. And I figured out a way to make him fly again.

And the best part? I got to tag along. So, we learned how to fly.

Meanwhile, I used the tricks I learned from Toothless to make it look like I was defeating the dragons in training. Underhanded? I know, but... there was something about the way my dad, and everyone, looked at me----

My dad? I... I forgot to mention him, huh? Stoick the Vast, Chief of Berk. Which makes me, yeah, you guessed it... the Chief's son. Heir to the throne! And all the blood that comes with it. Tell you the truth, I wasn't sure if I wanted that. I... I still don't. But, this is a man reknown for killing dragons and being everything a viking is supposed to be and he had never looked at me like that. I was always told to stay inside, and suddenly? He was proud.

For maybe ten seconds.

I should've said something. I should've told someone... but. But, Toothless thought I was in danger. And, he sprang to the rescue which was terrible. It was the worst idea. Because my dad, as usual, didn't listen to me. And I may have let it slip that---

I'm getting a head of myself. Way ahead. Let's back up. Training. It was... terrible. Astrid was the best. Which, of course she was. Astrid is always the best at whatever she wants to do. Heh... I'll... I'll save my gushing about her for later. I'm sure it'll get me a punch in the arm or something equally as violent.

[ A VERY WISTFUL SIGH. ] Moving... on. My father was off on a trip to find the Dragon's Nest. He thought if he got rid of it, the dragons would leave us alone. So all the while I was training and learning about Toothless and dragons, he wasn't there to see it. Probably a good thing. I think I'm braver when my dad isn't around. None of his disapproval. And he came back just in time for the final exam. Great, right?

Too bad the exam was killing a dragon.

)||( FINDING YOURSELF .

"You get to kill the dragon!" And all the cheers and excited roars, and all I could think was how nauseous I felt. So, I ran straight back to Toothless, prepared to leave and who's waiting there but.... Astrid. Talk about greatest dreams and nightmares rolled into one. Toothless and Astrid meeting? Eh, well, it didn't go so well at first. Lots of yelling, some screaming, Astrid almost died. But, she ended up on the same side. Our side. (With some killer hugs and total heart death.)

We were just flying around when Toothless started to act funny and then we found it: The Nest. And the Dragon Queen. Astrid wanted to tell my dad, but ... he wouldn't understand. I knew he wouldn't. She promised not to tell... and everything was different after that. And then it was time for the exam and it was going great----I almost tamed the dragon! And... my dad ruined everything. The dragon went rogue and Toothless came to save me, and my dad... lost it.

Toothless was captured, and my secret was out. In an argument with my dad, I spilled the beans about the Nest and the island. And he took Toothless. With some help from a gorgeous and brilliant blonde, I realized what I needed to do. I had to rescue everyone. I had to stop it. I had to.

Probably not my greatest idea, but in the face of reckless danger, one must be crazy. And it was a crazy idea.

I mean, it wasn't a bad idea. Fly into battle, get Toothless, save the day. I mean, as far as plans go? Not bad. Not great, not amazing... but not bad.

And it was going well. (Again, not great, not bad, but... well... enough, I suppose.) And then the Queen destroyed the boats carrying Toothless. I tried to get him out of the water, but I wasn't strong enough. Before I knew it, I was beng yanked out of the water and thrown aside and when I could see through the water running in my eyes... it was my dad. My dad saved Toothless. Stoick the Vast! The mightiest dragon killer in all of Berk just saved my Night Fury. And apologized, and told me how proud he was of me. Even without Toothless, I think I could have flew. But... of course, there was a dragon to deal with, and I had another idea.

Gods, it wasn't that great either.

)||( AN OCCUPATIONAL HAZARD .

The fight was intense. Whirling through the clouds, acting before I could think, and it was over before I knew it. I mean that literally. I was out for days before I woke up. And the world was different. I was too. Oh, I mean physically. Dang ol' dragon got a piece of me after all. Just my leg, but hey! I can still walk!

With help, of course. And that's fine. I feel like it makes me and Toothless even, you know? I crippled his tail, he... tried to save all of me, at least.

But, things changed. Without the Queen, dragons had no reason to attack us. And with my advice? Everyone embraced dragons. Berk might be a hunk of rock in the ocean, but... hey, we can touch the sky.

Peace... Peace doesn't last forever, though. Everything... Everything fell into chaos and I lost it all. I fought and I fought and I still lost everyting. My dad... the village... Astrid. Toothless. I don't remember what happened exactly. It was a clash of fighting and yelling and dragon fire, but I know we lost.

I never gave up, and I was told that someone dragged me through the Portal to here. And Haven has been so helpful. I just... I feel like I could've done more. Saved more people. Made sure everyone was okay. We're Vikings.

We don't lose well. But, hey, that's an occupational hazard right?

character basics

NAME:
HALVAR || It means DEFENDER OF THE ROCK in Old Norse. And I just feel given Hiccup's standing as the Chief's son, and constantly defense of Berk from whatever attacks from the back of Toothless ---- he is the Defender of Berk. Which is a rock in the middle of the sea tbqh.
LIEF || This is another Old Norse name that means DESCEDANT, HEIR. Which should be self explanatory.
JARLSON || Okay, so like I really get irked by the fact that Hiccup's surname is Haddock? But he's a Viking? IT SHOULD BE A PATRONYM U JERKS. But, anyway. Jarlson means Son of the Jarl. A Jarl (Yarl, not juh-arl) is the Chieftain of a region in Old Norse. And he is the Son of the Jarl of Berk.

PLAYBY:
ANDREW GARFIELD is a freaking dork, so is Hiccup! That aside, they actually favor a lot. Dark hair that is brilliantly thick and pretty, and their facial structure favors a bunch. Like it's unreal. Also DORKS. DORK DORK DOOOORKS.

BIRTHDAY:
January 18th

OCCUPATION:
UNIVERSITY STUDENT || Hal studies engineering at the local university, learning how to build things and make them better. And, he's very good at it. High marks and everything.
BLACKSMITH @ THOR'S HAMMER || Thor's Hammer is a very, very hipster store that markets real Viking weapon replicas at super high prices! They use actual methods and keep everything 100% authentic. As soon as Halvar heard about it, he applied... turns out he's quite good at it, to everyone's not surprise.

POWERS & ABILITIES:
The ability to tame dragons. Pretty much it.
Well, he's pretty smart. And he's handy at engineering and inventing. But, yeah, that's all I swear.

PERSONALITY:
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD. Okay, no. But he is a nerd. He is also brave, and smart, and reckless. Courageous. A natural-born leader. He is a perfect example of what it means to be good and kind, and still not be a push over. He only fights when he has no other choice, and values talking and diplomacy over violence. Viking? Perhaps the first Viking who values life over Valhalla. But he is compassionate and selfless, but stubborn and proud. He's Hiccup ok.

BACKGROUND:
Nothing has been changed background wise. If you're wondering why it seems non-linear it's because I wanted it to sound like an organic story. Like Hiccup was telling it from his memory and got some of the info mixed up. I wanted it to feel warm and normal and not like a whole synopsis of the movie. Which is why when I accidentally skipped ahead, I left it in. I wanted it to be his voice, telling his story. But canon wise? Nothing's changed. c8

CANON CUTOFF:
The canon cuts off somewhere after Gift of the Night Fury, as per Sam's app for Astrid.
